I started up the game with my Xbox One controller plugged in and I changed the controls to "Gamepad" and it now doesn't let me do anything, I press every button and nothing happens. So I tried to restart the game, didn't work. I tried restarting with a Xbox 360 controller plugged in, doesn't work. And now, since the controls are on "Gamepad" I can't use my keyboard and mouse on the menus at all, making it impossible to play the game.

in your documents folder there's a bioware folder with dragon age inquisition folder in that, I deleted the 2 files in the save folder and it defaulted back to keyboard and mouse controls

Trying this now, fingers crossed so I can actually play. Hopefully they get controllers working or let us know what the issue is soon.

Editing ProfileOptions_profile works without resetting all your configuration. Open the file in notepad and find the following line:

GstInput.GamePad 1

Change the 1 to a 0 and you're back to mouse and keyboard. Save and relaunch the game. I'd really like an actual fix though!

I finally have my controller working (I'm sure some steps can be skipped but this is what I did):

First I deleted the files as jonhuggs said (big thanks),

Next, I rebooted the PC, plugged my XBox One controller in and started a new game from Origin

I adjusted all the options to my liking only ignoring the enable gamepad option

Started a New Game, made chr, and ran through opening until I got to a point where I could save

Saved game and exited to main menu

Closed and re-opened game, enabled gamepad and loaded save to verify my controller was working

I had this issue too. I also had the same problem with Far Cry 4, believe it or not. As have many people had the same issue with Far Cry 4 (such as seen here: http://www.reddit.co...h_at_startup/).And the solution, as bizarre as it sounds, is to remove your USB bluetooth adapter and/or uninstall any virtual gamepad drivers. I have a special 3d mouse I use for 3d modeling that is recognized by Windows as a game controller. Because of Far Cry 4 and now DA:I, I have to reinstall the driver in the morning to work with it throughout the day and then uninstall the driver at night to play games, what a pain. Congrats game developers on not even offering proper controller support anymore. No wonder hardly anyone buys PC games anymore.

Unfortunately I have no such thing installed on my computer. Only a 360 controller, and Saitek HOTAS and pedals that I use for other games.

I unplugged the flight stuff and it still won't work... Why can't a high budget AAA game ever work like it should?

Edit: I read that Reddit post a little more closely and went into my Device Manager and disabled my flight stuff and restarted my PC. Now the controller works as it should...of course...

This isn't particularly a problem since I turn my PC off after I'm done with it, however if I wanted to play Elite: Dangerous after DA: I or vice versa then I'd have to re-enable/disable the drivers and restart my PC each time. Such an inconvenience for something that should be so simple in 2014...

Yes, thank you greatly for the link. I'm able to enjoy the game now.

Hopefully this gets sorted out at some point.

I actually got my wired controller to work, as I  said before I tried my wireless xbox 360 (official) controller 1st and it wouldn't work, then tried a wired rock candy 360 controller and at first it wouldn't work either. What I did to get the wired one working was to unplug the wireless adapter and reboot my computer which made the player 1 light come on (it was player 2 before) and now it works which is great because I prefer it to the kb/m controls after trying them for a bit. So if you have a wired one make sure it's player 1 and hopefully it'll work for you too.
