I have completed Mass Effect 1 on PC twice. I began a third playthrough and for whatever reason never completed it. I uninstalled Mass Effect at some point when trying to make room on my HDD, and never reinstalled it. I found several saved game files from those playthroughs that were never deleted.
If I were to buy Mass Effect 2 on Steam, would I be able to move those saved games to the proper location, and 1) Steam access them properly and 2) Mass Effect 2 be able to draw my character from the first game even though I am mid playthrough? I can't tell from looking at these saved games when they are in the game, and just wondered if everything would work properly when trying to import a character into Mass Effect 2.
I hope this isn't too similar to some threads already floating around, and I really appreciate any help.
John

1) I don't think you'd even have to move them. But yes, to answer your main question; the PC version of ME2 via any retailer should work with the saves from the PC version of ME1 via any retailer.
2) No, mid-game saves are not importable to ME2. You can only use the ones it makes automatically when you finish the game.

This, however, if there were mid-game saves, odds are good that there are also your previous endgame saves in the same place. As after each game, it makes a new savegame I believe. At worst, there certainly should be your 2nd savegame, it may have overwritten the first. But they don't delete when you start again. So you'd lose any progress you've made in playthrough 3, but keep what you did in playthrough 2.

Kloreep is right about that, Steam picks up the saves from their default location (it's somewhere burried in My Documents) so you don't need to worry about that.
As for importable saves, it's definitely only the final save as ME2 is expecting decisions on things like the council which that save won't have made yet. The final save is on a 'per-career' basis so you'll have a new option for each career you played in ME1 (not per playthrough).

Yes, all versions of ME1 store the same saves in the same place. Only real difference between versions of the games is the DRM, saves work the same on all of them.
