How do you disable a core?

As soon as the game starts, open the Taskmanager, search the "dragonageinquisition.exe", right click it, search "Set Affinity" and disable one or more cores. When you are in the game, do the same to enable all cores back again.

Helps if you press ALT+ENTER after starting to go to windowed mode, or set the game to Windowed Fullscreen.

This work around works for me very consistently.

This is occuring on my laptop which is an AMD A10-4600M APU (CPU+GPU). It runs pretty much any game fine that I throw at it, I have to lower settings sometimes but generally it runs stuff pretty fast including current titles like Battlefield 4 and so on. So it should be able to handle this game fine. I have even set all the graphics options to low or disabled, lowered resolution, installed latest AMD drivers, even tried the latest beta AMD drivers which specifically mention Dragon Age Inquisition optimizations. Game loads up fine but freezes (not black screen) after you click a button to start. I see extremely high CPU usage in Task Manager from the game (over 95%+). This is very unusual as my CPU usage is seldom ever that high even in other current triple A, high performance, demanding games. This is a quad core CPU at 2.3 GHz so it should be more than plenty to run the game and the graphics are pretty good on it as well. I've tried fresh installs of Windows 8.1 and also the Windows 10 Technical Preview (latest build as of today's date) and have the same results on the same machine. The same computer runs TItanfall fine, Battlefield 4 fine, and MMOs etc. just fine so this is not a hardware problem. It also runs them all stable and with pretty good performance. It's the game in this case. I *love* Dragon Age (the whole series) so I am not bashing it at all. I am excited and anxious to play! I just want to have this bug fixed asap so it doesn't do this anymore, so both me and others who are experiencing the problem can get into the game and have fun PLAYING the game! 16x16_smiley-happy.png BTW - no 3rd party antivirus running or anything else weird running, just the vanilla Windows "normal stuff" upon a fresh install, installing Origin, and the game itself. (Same deal tried on both Win 8.1 64-bit and Win 10 Technical Preview 64-bit) and both had the same results.

Please work towards a fix on this problem. Thanks guys!

the solution for me with that problem: start the game, directly on the first black screen pres alt+enter to get the windowed mode, so i passed the "connection freeze bug". then setup up graphic and controll settings, start a new game (whent its loading)  press again alt+enter and you can play in fullscreen mode. you have to do it everytime when you start the game. its the only way for me to play it (now  8 hours playtime)

i suffer from this bug, but the added bonus is that the game has frozen in-game a couple of times as well, long after i've clicked continue. you really need to hop on this, bioware. this doesn't play like a finished game. :(

Follow up from my experience: I was able to get another few gaming sessions in by doing the quick start method. When the game launches I immediately hit New Game or Continue as fast as possible to not give the title screen enough time to freeze. After this it works until I finish playing. If I exit back out to the menu it will freeze after 10-15 seconds.

This started happening as soon as I started the game after install and has only gotten worse as of last night. All of these workarounds are fine and dandy but at the risk of sounding like a rabble rouser the real issue is the fact that all of us paid up to 70 dollars for the game and in truth none of this should actually be happening. The issue is not an isolated one as I know for a fact this is an acknowledged problem across the board for many pc gamers. In the thirty years of gaming under my belt this is the worst release I've ever seen for out of the box problems. Sorry if I sound harsh but I am a bit disgruntled.

Unless, the unspoken has happened which no one has brought up. Have the servers been hacked??? Could this be a possibility? Anyhow like most of you I have an excellent gaming machine and it should be purring like a kitten with this game. SO there I've said my piece. Now I will go back to waiting patiently for an answer from the creators that will fix the problem once and for all with out me having to tweak an ini file or change my computer settings.

I turned off the Origin Ingame-Overlay.

This worked! Disabling my network adapter seems to not freeze the game. Not the ideal solution, but at least it's playable and gives an idea of the root cause for the devs.

Update: I turned off my firewall and it still froze. Seems the network adapter is the culprit?

Update 2: I spoke too soon. I tried it again with network adapter disabled and it froze on the title screen. This just seems to be a roll of the dice if it freezes or not.

Are you running a complete security suite?

I set mine to a gaming mode feature and that usually helps me from getting lockups on game starts.

The game when it starts is already trying to communicate with EA Origin.

If your security isn't configured right, you could be blocked.

I'd definately check out that angle.  Good luck.

I turned off the Origin Ingame-Overlay.

You might also want to take this users suggestion and shut down various other EA Origin communication options just to make sure.

Really sounds like a communication blockage from what I read.

Ok here's what I did and it worked, first I started the game as Administrator, worked got past the server then instead of opening the game I opened The Keep with the icon below. I logged in using my Origin login and synced my other DA games and created a tapestry and saved it, I made sure that all three games were present (not necessary is what it says) any how, I was not logged in to the keep so I think this is an issue if your game is set to uploading and syncing to the Keep which it  appeared to be once I got in. Instead of syncing my tapestry to the game I returned to the game and recreated my lost character and when it came to the world I said yes to syncing to the keep. The game started and played on with no issues so far so good after a bit I saved and exited. I'll know soon enough when I go back to the game if it worked in the bigger scheme of things. Starting in Admin seems to be the key to begin with. I hope this helps for some of you if not all.

Good luck and play on the game appears to be quite outstanding!

unfortunately i have tried every trick i could find from updating drivers and playing in admin mode to completely reinstalling the game (which took hours i might add)nothing has worked for me i also have the directx error problem so at most i have been able to play maybe 10-15 minutes of the game at most before it crashes i at this point all we can really do is hope Bioware comes out with a patch for all this soon

For me the same problem as well. Running the game on a quad-core pc with NVidia graphics (latest drivers) and Windows 7. My best guess is that this issue is not about graphics drivers or hardware performance, but has something to do with connectivity or interaction with the Origin game client.

Once I start the game with 'new game' and it gets to the character creation, all seems to be just fine. But every time I go back to the start menu or when starting up the game, it freezes after a while. It also sometimes pops up a message about "not able to reach the game cloud", or something like that...

Tonight I will try the CPU core affinity solution that was posted here (thanks for that!) and let you know if it worked for me. If not, I will just keep doing what most of you are probably doing: rebooting the game and quickly press 'load game'... and just hope the game doesn't freeze on me before it's loaded.

Getting the same issue......most of the time it works if you start the Game as admin and then quickly create new/continue game. If you sit on the start screen too long it freezes after 10-20seconds....not sure if anyone has had this problem completely fixed with the ideas mentioned...

Update: I unplugged all extraneous devices (my logitech headset and iphone) from my computer and now it is not freezing.

Edit: Got an hour in (good times!) and decided to retest this theory. It is now still freezing at the menu even with extraneous devices unplugged. Maybe I got lucky once.

Is your system overheating?

I just got into the game using the affinity trick. i disabled a single core...  core 3 to be exact. once i got passed the menu screen i continued my game. once in the game i tabbed out and re-enabled the core.

i run win 7 with a Q6600 2.4ghz core 2 duo by intel.  i am a bottom feeder and i honestly believe this is a multi core issue. i have ran into this problem with another game in the past. older game cant remember the game tho.

i know once i shut the game down i will probably have to do this until they fix it.

I had the same. What helped was turn of one of my cores while the game was starting (in task manager - set Affinity). U just have to do it everytime u start the game. but its not so bad. It takes just few seconds :)

This happens to me too. But only at the main screen. If I can click "CONTINUE" fast enough, the game will otherwise run smoothly for the most part (in terms of performance).

My rig:

  • AMD FX-8350 (8-core @4.0GHz... well, that's what it says on the box, but I'm pretty sure it's just 4 cores with hyperthreading)
  • AMD Radeon HD 7950 (3 GB of VRAM)
  • 16 GB of DDR3 RAM
  • Windows 7 Professional SP1 (64-bit)

While it's not exactly a hellbeast, this kind of instablility really shouldn't be happening. Hope this gets fixed soon.

@Sartoz: I'm pretty sure is not due to heat - mine never exceeds 40 C. My case + fans have pretty decent airflow.

Same problem here.

Sometimes it just happens to work, sometimes not. Sometimes it also crashes after about 6-12 hours of continual play (on the weekend) and when I look at task manager it says 98% of memory usage.

I5 Quad core

8 gb ram

windows 8.1

AMD radeon R9 270x graphics

Well since it's so common I'm feeling relieved.

Time to try all the tricks on this post and more:

turn off the Origin Ingame-Overlay - no dice.
start in admin - no dice

exceptions in anti-virus (8.1 windows defender) - worked for a while then stopped working
windowed mode trick. - nope.
turn off cloud saving. - nope

core affinity trick - so far this is the only way that I can get into the game every time.

Other things I didn't try:

turn off internet.
remove saves except the current one from folder.

I have the same problem and it immediate freezes whenever I try to log in. But my computer meets the requirements and once I make it to "new game" or "continue game" (and obviously the game itself, it's fine and freezing is no longer and issue.

Does the title screen really use up that much ram, processor speed, or whatever compared to the game itself?

This has been happening to me too.

I just kill the process in task manager and then relaunch the game.  Looks like a bug when it attempts to reach the Dragon Age Servers, which is usualy the spot I see mine hang.  If I get to load a game or start a new one, it seems to work afterward, I have not experienced any freezes while in game.

This is what I'm running it on:

Core i5 2500K OC'd to 4.3GHz

8GB RAM

GTX 590

Hope this gets patched/addressed soon!

I'm able to set most settings to Ultra except MSAA and get 60fps in game.  Cutscenes are locked in at 30fps it looks like.

Same.

How did you get your core to be overclocked? My processor is and AMD A4 5000 and I have no idea how to expand the GHZ past 2.0

In my experience, this was due to my CPU utilization spiking at 100% while in the start up screen.  Wiping out all of my drivers and re-installing with the 14.11.2 beta drivers (AMD) is what solved this issue for me.
