There are certain companion characters that I plan to ignore, kill or refuse to recruit entirely during certain playthroughs and would like to know if that's even possible or are certain companions forced on you and your story? Assuming you have no say in at least some of the companions joining you initially can you promptly dismiss them after the initial forced interaction? In Origins you had the options to dismiss, kill or refuse to recruit all companions besides Alistair. The options with your characters in DA2 were much more limited for the most part. Will the options be more akin to Origins or DA2 in this regard?
Can i kill or refuse to recruit companions?

I'm curious about this myself. It would definitely make for a more unique experience to be able to go through different playthroughs with having a more customized group of companions. from actually having a choice about who joins you this time.

Sigh, dont recruit them or if they are the "essential" companions, just leave them in the stronhold

I think we need a couple days more for this as most of the people are taking their time to explore and haven't seen many companions yet.

You can refuse to recruit at least some of the companions. The game gives you a explanatory notice like, "so-and-so will go away and you will be unable to recruit them" for the refuse option.

You're also in the non spoiler part of the forums. Maybe look in the other Scuttlebutt forum?

Some are optional. Some are mandatory.

You will probably HAVE to recruit them.
There is no requirement that you have to USE them though.

The some being optional and some not approach is about what i expected but I would have preferred it being closer to DAO in that nearly all companions were completely optional. I suppose we'll have to wait a little while longer when more people have finished to determine exactly what's what.

I'd normally agree, but this isn't necessarily a spoiler topic.
Anyway...
In Origins just about every companion is optional. You can even get rid of Morrigan. The only person you're pretty much stuck with is Alistair, who you can switch out for Loghain (who you can also, indirectly, kill) later on. You can kill Leliana, Wynne, Zevran, maybe Oghren?, and Shale.
In Awakening literally every companion is optional, but you can only kill Velanna and Nathaniel.
Isabela and Fenris were the only really optional companions in DA2. You could tell Merrill to take a hike and whatnot, but she'd still be there. You couldn't kill off any companions until the very end, though.
Based off of all of that, and what we've learned so far, my guesses would be -
- Cassandra = definitely required
- Varric = possibly required (since he was last time, not to mention that we're going to see Hawke again, so we might need him)
- Vivienne = probably required
- Blackwall = optional (Wardens are respected in Orlais, so I don't think you'd be able to kill him)
- Sera = optional; kill-able
- Dorian = optional; kill-able
- Solas = optional; kill-able (raised tensions between Orlesians and Dales definitely make this a possibility)
- Cole = optional; kill-able (I remember hearing somewhere that Sera wants the Inquisitor to kill Cole)
- Iron Bull = optional; kill-able
