No... but it's still a bad idea. You're not playing the same character as the previous entries as you are in Mass Effect, but the world changes every bit as much.

There are a lot of lore videos on youtube you can watch for recaps. There is quite a bit of backstory.

Not sure how friendly the game will be about the lore. Look for codex to be read, they will tell you the story, but there's no better way than playing the previous games or reading the comics and the books.
