So in the Hinterlands, there's a spot where you encounter some black wolves. Right after them is a large, bull-like creature named Druffy. Level 12. I keep fighting him down to low health, but then he goes invulnerable and won't die.

I've wasted a long time trying to kill this damn creature, and there's no hint in the game as to why I can't kill him. Numbers keep popping up for damage I've done to him, but his health won't go any lower than about 5% or so.

This is really frustrating and very poor game design. There should be some hint as to why I can't kill him. Is this a bug or just bad planning on the devs part?

It's part of a quest. That's why it won't die. You can use it to your advantage. I lured him over to a level 12 rift when I was level 7 and let the demons beat up on him while I killed them.

Druffy was my first real epic fight.  Since I was only like level 8 at the time I had no chance to beat it down to even 50% so I was going to come back for it latter when I found the quest for it.  I think leading that big stupid animal back to the farm was worse than fighting it with no hope of victory.

I think he is attackable to give you the sense that while you are leading him back to the farm if he gets attacked his health will deplete so you feel you have to protect him so he doesn't die.... They probably didn't expect people to take time to try to kill something quest related and maybe assumed people would get the quest first (I did)

He's actually a pretty aggressive little guy.  When I was escorting him back to his home I had a couple of encounters and he pitched right in and took no damage.  That gave me pause.  My thought was, "If I go to sleep before getting him home, will he eat my face?".  Thought it best to get him home right away.

If he's unkillable, start the quest and get him to follow you. You now have an unkillable NPC that attacks mobs also.

Wish I'd have thought of that, I just went back for the rift later...

I never ran into him until I had the quest and I went and completed it right there.

Druffy is adorable. Why on earth would you attack him?

I came into this thread, knowing it was a side quest, so I should probably admit that I've been chuckling a little bit. I'm sorry.

If you spend any time at the nearby farm, they have more penned up druffalos, just like him.

Anonymous definitely should make a comic or youtube video about allmighty fullmetal Chuck Druffy, who stops Blight, destroys Archidemon's anus, and close those breaches by himself.
F*** the heroes, f*** the inquisition, I'm an angry auroch.

Tomorrow I will start a new game, bring Druffy to the dragon lair nearby and watch the show.

Yup... I tried to kill that one as well. No luck.

And then 1 hours later I picked up a quest to find Druffy and bring it back to its owner.
That's how badly this game is made, really.

Wow basing an entire game's quality off one small nitpick? You should work at IGN.

Thank God I thought it was just my save game. That big-a-- buffalo attacked my party when we got jumped by some wolves and I spent forever trying to kill that thing. 12 healing potions and 20 regeneration potions + a Resurgance spell later I gave up because it was down to like 1 hit point and wouldn't die.

I passed him on the way to the redcliffe farms but he wasn't aggro.  Mind you I only found him after I killed the wolves so I didn't hatchet him to get a reaction.

I came across Druffy while working on the Trouble with Wolves sub-quest for the Horses for the Inquisition quest.  I accidentially aggroed the thing while attacking the wolves.  He took me out pretty handily (I'm only level 4) so I respawned, took to the high ground and tried to take him down.  I stood on that ledge for like 30 minutes burning and shocking his druffalo buttocks but he won't die.  I made a short video to demonstrate.  Click here to see it.

I agree that this game is lacking some polish in it's design and mechanics.  They spent a lot of time on it's look but it appears some crucial bits were overlooked where it counts.  Sigh.  So the best thing to do is not use any AOEs that might aggro Druffy when taking down the wolves.  If you do aggro him, you can either try to run him off or reload your last save point.  Let's hope this is addressed in an upcoming patch.

This is the hell that awaits those who attack innocent druffalo. Hopefully you learned your lesson.

There were a remarkable number of early streams posted to the net where brave explorers decided to aggro that first pasture of Druffalo, almost always with the same result. I think people accidentally stumbling on Lady Shayna's valley were the only more common reloading point in the Hinterlands, as far as I could tell.

...but then, I was minding my own business in Crestwood and ran across a different bug- one where the black wolves registered as friendlies but would follow my party around growling. This was mostly amusing, until the wolves attacked an innocent Druffalo. What I didn't realize was that said Druffalo, after killing the wolves, would aggro on me when I wasn't looking. Though he got a charge in, I probably wasn't in any danger even though I was out of potions at the time. I dealt with the second charge in an inadvertently clever way: the Druffalo charges straight through my party and into the pond and disappears. I look after him, waiting, and Cassandra gives her after-battle banter.

Ole'!

He is part of a quest. http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Druffy

As a result you cannot kill him until a certain part.

That what i did on both my playthroughs, it's funny hehe. Druffollo the Charging Tank, with only charging bull as it's only combat move i think. .

Which, if it is the case, is a terribly old and poorly designed gaming mechanic.  Completely immersion breaking and out of place in an RPG.  If it's a quest mob, it either shouldn't spawn until the quest is started... or you should be able to kill it and loot the quest item even if you haven't gotten the quest yet.

Depends on the quest though, There is another quest that is similar concerning animals where you have to find a Talking Ram called Mr Woosley (or Moosley, i forgot which) i think. That Ram is killable. So is the Golden Halla in Exalted Plains.

I usually leave the animals alone unless there's a quest for them. The only exception is the snowfleur because its fur is T3 craft material. Anyhoo, I find it hilarious that some would try to kill a quest druffalo (albeit unknowingly and unsuccessfully). :P
