I started with chain lightning and a fire spell, but I think barrier looks like it will be absolutely critical to shield against damage so I might put a point there.  But Solas already has spirit and frost spells, so maybe that is redundant.  The most enticing trees look like spirit and frost.

Barrier looks to be essential for all mages.
