I know a lot of you people let Sten out because you wanted a cool/useful companion, but did anyone let him out solely because they agreed with the 'atonement' factor?

In other words, if it were really you making that choice, with your own morals in place, what would you have done?

in my first playthrought i let him out as i wanted to grt all the characters, also i thought his murders would be explain by possession or a curse (well anything that would have taken his free will) but after discovering he'd done  it out of anger and some fanatic warrior's honor (nice way to repay people who saved his life) i let him rot in his cell and that is what i will choose in DA keep

If it were really me? I probably would have left him to rot. He's clearly dangerous and unstable.

But in a game, I know when a redemption story-arc is staring me in the face.

I'm actually one of those types who could not bear to see anyone rot in a cell like that.  I would have asked for his freedom regardless.  However, I would have asked to have him released to my custody.  And, yes, I am a "bleeding heart" Liberal.

Sten deserves to not only rot in that cell, but be tortured until the end of his days.

I would've done exactly as my DN did in-game, which was let him out for the atonement element. I and he agreed with it. From that first discussion alone I was able to perceive his true character, so it was an easy to make decision.

My recent City Elf let him out because of the atonement factor, yes, and gets along surprisingly well with Sten because of it. He's looking for atonement himself because he did the unforgivable and accepted Vaughan's bribe in the origin story (out of fear, not greed. He believed Vaughan's threats).

He is a powerful ally and his is a redemption story. Hard to resist. I left him in that cell once because I believed he belonged there, but never felt "right" about it. If this was a real life choice, I would say he should be left in there and let the Darkspawn rip him apart as he ripped apart the family he murdered. But from a RP stance it is just missing out on good story arc that I feel will carry over to something important later on.

Plus my mage usually becomes an Arcane Warrior. IMO, that is the ultimate tank. No need for Alistair. Sten is my warrior.

What Sten did is terrible, but that does not define him. Nor do his actions in the Blight redeem him for what he did in Lothering. They are two separate things. He has done bad things and good things, one does not eradicate the other.

To answer the question I have never left him in the cell across all my playthroughs.
