How do you disrupt the rift?

Cassandra keeps on telling me to disrupt the rift, and the on-screen directions show that I need to do a right-click.  But where do I need to be standing to do that?  Looking up, I can see the "DISRUPT RIFT" label, but right-clicking and/or F don't seem to trigger the rift disruption.  I feel like I'm missing something obvious, like having to be at the same altitude as the rift or something like that.

You have to stand pretty close to the rift, and then right click.

Closing the rift requires to kill all nearby demons first.

Just how close is "close"?  I stand just under it and right-click does nothing.  Standing just off to the side and looking up and right-clicking still does nothing.  Do I have to be under it and looking up (which I can't seem to get the camera to tilt up that much)?

The more I mess with this, the more I feel that BioWare has really managed to craft some pretty crappy controls.

First, take a few steps back and then and look up to the rift. You'll see the symbol with the text "disrupt the rift".

You don't need to be close to it. Just look up until you can see the interaction symbol and the text.

Killed my character 5 times to find out. :(

The trick to me was seeing it was the same system as the loot/ladder. You have to be in a position you get the circle with the dot(what i think of as clever Target advertising) in it. And then you have to right click that target. If you miss or just click the words or area nothing happens.

When you do hit it you will raise your arm and green light will connect you and the rift. If you get hit you will stop. And some rifts have stages where you have to do this a couple times.

Use Tac view and your character will run up and trigger it, why they removed this function outside of Tac view is beyond me.

I did not find Tac view helpful at all.  My character never ran up and triggered anything.  I had to laboriously and mostly unsuccessfully stand in different places and try to click on the rift.  The trick that worked with the ladder wasn't successful here for me either.  Frustrating.

you can change the difficulty and yes the tactical cam sucks, you have to stand pretty close to the rift and look up before you click. The mouse cursor will change to a golden hand when you can click on it.

Sometimes you have to tilt the view up with your right mouse button.

I know you can choose it in the beginning but in game there is no way to change it without starting over.

Yeah, I can't do it either. I don't know what the trick is, but I'm getting tired of clicking on everything from every angle.

It shouldn't be that hard?!

if you're playing on pc, pressing "F" will work as well when you're near the rift. And, you don't have to kill all the demons to disrupt the rift, you have to kill all the demons to "close" it. to disrupt, you simply have to right click on it.

If any of you expected a good tactical cam for this game, your hopes were destroyed before the game was out. This always happens when the company decides to make a game for consoles and make a port of it to pc as well. This is just another case. PC controls will always suck no matter how many patches come out.

Short answer: you don't. Total waste of time. Just keep fighting the waves as they come; much faster that way.

What Vyndral says. You can only interact with the rift when you see the circle surrounding the little dot, the same than when trying to interact with anything else in game (loot, open doors, climb ladders, talk to someone, etc).

Here is how it works, the option of disrupting the rift is NOT always available, only at specific times. Here is how it pretty much goes:

1) You approach the rift close enough, the first wave spawns.

2) As your companions fight this wave, you approach the rift exactly the same way how you will do it if you were trying to close it, but instead of closing it you should see the option of disrupting it. It is exactly the same icon. It is tricky to do it because any attack from any of the demons during the cast will break your attempt and the cast of the spell takes a while, it is highly likely that you would be interrupted unless you guarantee that your companions have the attention of ALL the demons in the wave.

3) Once you and your team kill the first wave, a second wave spawns. Be aware that during this spawning phase, the option of interrupting the rift is NOT available.

4) The second wave spawns, and again, while your team is fighting the demons of this wave, you approach the rift and try to disrupt it, again, any damage received, regardless of how mild it is, interrupts the attempt and you need to start casting again from the beginning.

Stand near it, press F. The rift needs to look "solid", when it looks like gas it's been disrupted already or it's gonna spawn more demons. (I hope this makes some sense, sorry)

That's not true.  That pride demon is a painful beast in the intro to the game (too difficult for what amounts to an extended tutorial, and discourages playing at higher difficulties, imo).  You will be spending a lot more time and effort defeating him if you don't disrupt the rift every time you get the opportunity.  Disrupting will take away all his guard, and drop him to his knees for a short while.  He is most vulnerable (and least dangerous) then.

I know this thread was necrobumped, but it's a worthwhile subject anyway.  I had a hard time understanding the disrupting bit myself, and basically ignored it during my entire first playthrough.  It's useful on every rift, if you can get your inquisitor away from harm long enough to pull it off.

You do, however, have the option to prevent the spawning of demons by dispel or spell purge.

It's a bug. The problem has to do with a mouse with a high DPI.

Try the following workaround: If you have a mouse which can change the DPI on the fly then set it to very low: 500 or less. That way you can disrupt and close the rift easier. When you are done, set it back to the DPI you want.

It seems that only the rift at the temple has this bug. Others appear to be fine.

I'm suprised at how people take the effort to find old threads to bump just to say that they too have the problem
