So wait, your upset because there is an NPC that gives you a quest you cant complete because you cant afford to download the DLC he's tied too? Excuse me while I play the world's smallest violin. I fail to see how this is a problem. Its not like hes holding a large sign selling pizza or even advertising the DLC, you have to talk to him and you can decide to get the content or not. I call that a pretty smart way of offering up your content, you call it a destruction of your immersion, yet we are talking about the same thing. Crazy.
Funny how reasonable people can have different opinions about what's important, isn't it?
He IS holding up a large sign, btw... there's a large unmistakable special symbol which means DLC FOR SALE HERE floating in the air and pointing at him, as several people further up pointed out to me.
If you look at the discussions of in-game advertising in industry blogs and conference proceedings and so on, you will see that up till now, in-game ads for real world third party products were considered perfectly acceptable in certain kinds of games... especially racing and sports games... because they "increase realism". Fantasy RPGs, though, have frequently been explicitly mentioned as being off-limits for this kind of thing, precisely because of this immersion issue. It's not like I made that up; industry insiders have been aware of it for years.
EA found a means by which they thought they could get away with advertising something in a fantasy RPG, and I'm sure they consider this a breakthrough. But even if it's "just" a game extension, in my opinion it's no better than the Nike ad.
