So wait, your upset because there is an NPC that gives you a quest you cant complete because you cant afford to download the DLC he's tied too? Excuse me while I play the world's smallest violin. I fail to see how this is a problem. Its not like hes holding a large sign selling pizza or even advertising the DLC, you have to talk to him and you can decide to get the content or not. I call that a pretty smart way of offering up your content, you call it a destruction of your immersion, yet we are talking about the same thing. Crazy.

Funny how reasonable people can have different opinions about what's important, isn't it? :)

He IS holding up a large sign, btw... there's a large unmistakable special symbol which means DLC FOR SALE HERE floating in the air and pointing at him, as several people further up pointed out to me.

If you look at the discussions of in-game advertising in industry blogs and conference proceedings and so on, you will see that up till now, in-game ads for real world third party products were considered perfectly acceptable in certain kinds of games... especially racing and sports games... because they "increase realism". Fantasy RPGs, though, have frequently been explicitly mentioned as being off-limits for this kind of thing, precisely because of this immersion issue. It's not like I made that up; industry insiders have been aware of it for years.

EA found a means by which they thought they could get away with advertising something in a fantasy RPG, and I'm sure they consider this a breakthrough. But even if it's "just" a game extension, in my opinion it's no better than the Nike ad.

I fail to see how it's not a problem myself. While it's not holding up a sign it might as well be.

I think any adversion to giving money to BioWare should be met with pitchforks and torches... and axes and magic missles.

And elf limbs. Just because.

Npow if we can get about 30,000,000 more votes...  hard to win the presidency on a one-issue platform like "Hassle Free Gaming."

Agree to disagree I guess. I don't see anything wrong with this. As I said before, its a clever way to get in your extra stuff into the game and put it where it can be seen. And its not advertising for pizza hut, or mcdonalds, its for Bioware's OWN content. A company advertising their own product in a tactful manner, is just fine with me. And yes, I believe they did it tactfully. Its an NPC clearly indicating he leads to additional, extra content. Hes not Jumping up and donw screaming and yelling with in-game spam emotes or voice saying BUY MY DLC. Hes standing there with an indicator above his head telling you what he is. I agree with you, 3rd party advertising would bother me, this is NOT 3rd party advertising.

It is absolute crap. My box doesn't say missing content. It doesn't say spend money to play more of the game. I feel like taking it back. Talk about misleading.

Why don't they label the box. this is the incomplete retail version. Parts B and C and D and whatever are available for purchase.

Or better yet this is a subscription single player game.

Maker's breath, NOT THIS again, there was a mega thread about this on the old forums and it was clearly stated that the NPC isn't going to go away and since you are in no way obliged to purchase the DLC, you might as well leave him alone. While I do agree that explamation marked NPC's isn't the best idea ever to implement a DLC related quest, I don't really see the need to grab my pitchfork against the devs.

The retail (disc) version isn't incomplete in any shape or form, by the way. Shale comes for free and the Warden's Keep has no real impact on the main story, other than history references (and a few very good items, which is an entirely different discussion).

If it bother you THAT much, there you go : http://social.biowar...t/1142/#details (addon to remove Levi). Happy now ?

Not really.   Why should I be... I just cracked open the game yesterday.  Not even sure why you would defend a game that is incomplete.   I just finished Witcher and thought wow amazing.  This game doesn't have half the style and it has advertisements in the middle of it.  Weak sauce.  I spent 30 minutes reading forums and fiddling with codes and account when I spent $40 bucks to have fun, not mess around with shareware.

But thanks for the link.  It was thoughtful of you.  Happy holidays.

Yet another resurrected (or zombified?) one month old thread, but i must say i don't like how DLC content is handled in this game. Even the equipment found or purchased from DLC's have different icon background than non-DLC items. I'd rather they use Bethesda's method, where new content is integrated seamlessly (disregarding the annoying "Quest added" pop-ups) into the gameworld.

The very fact that we need to buy side quests is enough for complaints.

Ah, good old times...

It would be nice if you could kill Dryden and burn his wagon down.

I dont think you could possibly be any more overly dramatic. You are not missing anything that is needed to complete the official campaign. You dont like DLC, fine. Many dont. That dont change the fact that it is now common place for devs to offer it to lengthen the life the the game.

Either get used to it or move on. Complaining about it wont change anything.

I also found him immensly annoying. I hate ingame advertising. I remember speaking to him in my first game and suddenly realising it was DLC, it annoyed me to no end that they were attempting to sell me it in this way.

It wouldn't be so bad if I could tell him to get off my camp, or kill him, or whatever. Yeah, i've got into the habit of ignoring him completely now, but to tell the truth, it's really the attitude of sticking him in that irks me, rather than how annoying he is. Speaking of which, i'm assuming there isn't a mod which deletes him or allows you to kill him or whatever, as I assume anything associated with DLC is rendered unmoddable.

EA, if you must barrage us with pay content, keep it on your website or even in the launcher, please. But DON'T POLLUTE THE INTEGRITY OF THE GAME WORLD WITH IT.

Yes, I'm shouting. I'm upset, because I was totally blindsided by this. The immersion is shattered. :(

Oh geez, we've heard all this before. Sure, having a constant advertisment sat in the game willing you to pay a few quid to play a DLC is a bit cheeky, but let's be honest here - beyond all the rhetoric and the fury, does it really matter?

Just ignore the guy if you're not interested.

This thread reminds me why working in PR is bad, even in the software industry. MMMkay? You know if you would shell out the couple bucks one spends on a bigmac on the content than it would be a hassle no longer? Some people and their priorities.

In case you were unaware:

following the success of the in camp DLC NPC pitch, the marketing people at EA have been trying to place more in game prompts to badger players.

Such as...

merchants will say: Your inventory sure looks full! Don't forget to explore Warden's Peak ™ and gain your very own storage chest!

in camp, Alistair will initiate conversatiion, and say what happened at Ostagar was wrong, I sure wish we could Return To Ostagar ™ and revenge our fallen heroes!

why, the prompts could be endless! maybe even flyers on walls or ads on the bottom of Chantry Boards...

sure looking forward to it all!!

I'm a sucker for DLC: get it, enjoy it, look forward to more. My job just sends my paycheck to game companies, it cuts out the middleman (that would be me).

Is Return to Ostagar supposed to be £3? I'll get it for that price.
