Why do you say 'already' as if I just made this thread.

My thread was created at the same time as that one, and has many more replies and gets actual attention from Bioware developers.

Keeping this thread going is our best hope for getting a Walk Button.

You're right, this thread was only created shortly after. Sorry if I confused you by quoting your first post :)

My intention was only to provide a link where people can vote on the issue since that's what is alledegly reported by the support team. I seriously doubt that developers are reading much of these forums now, so that increases the odds for them to realize it's a demanded fix.

Every second page of the PC community concerns thread has someone mentioning they need to walk. I think they got the message, if not... oh boy!

They did get the message. The question is now whether it'll come with Patch 3 or keep getting setback due to 'issues'.

I seriously hope the issues they were having back in Nov have been resolved and this feature is on track for the next patch, which I hope doesn't take 3 more weeks(likely will). Speaking of patches, where is PC hotfix!?

Today I finally gave the gamepad (Xbox One Pad) a try. It was amazing how bad I fared against enemies with the same level and how "disabled" I felt using the controller. I will continue to try. It will either work or I'll end up giving up on my most anticipated game in 2014....

Thank you, Bioware, for showing your appreciation to your loyal fans. I bought every game since Baldurs Gate 2. I might change that habbit...

You could always just use the controller for casual situations, that's what I did my first playthrough.

I find combat on a controller to be absolutely awful(no hotbar=no fun in this type of RPG) on a controller, but it works fine for when I just want to casually walk around and talk to people.

Yeah, I decided to do that. It still sucks since sometimes I also wanna walk during exploration, but the way it it hindering myself during fights is just insane. Plus the extra annoyance of having to swap input in the main menu. Gnaaaah!

I still can't wrap my head around it. Basics: Every control feature present on the controller should be present on the keyboard. It's like Bioware doesn't understand that pc controls come naturally to pc players. "Oh why wouldn't you just pick up a controller" I almost hear them say. "It's so simple!" No it's not if you usually don't play with a controller. There is a difference in dragging a camera around or pushing it around. It feels completely different.

This is trivial, yet they seem unable to grasp it. "The pc legacy", how they call it in their "for pc players by pc players" video hoax is dead and burried. :( And with no ETA for patch 3 every minute of playtime feels like "this could actually be better with patch 3". But it is christmas, I have leisure and I'm sick of waiting. I'm definitely going to continue. But I will not forget what the pc community really means to Bioware these days.

Well, looks like we have our answer. I'm content with this personally, it explains alot especially if you look at the binding settings in your DAI document folder.

They say they are having a lot of difficulties incorporating the walk on the PC version. Although it seems like the ability to walk would be a simple thing, especially if the animation was already there, at the same time this suddenly makes a lot of sense as well. If the walk isn't functioning properly on the PC, perhaps because of something to do with the new engine, then that would explain why they didn't have it included when the game was first released even though it was always in Dragon Age 1 and 2.

A lot of us assumed they just scammed us PC gamers by giving us such inferior quality compare to the console platforms. We scoffed at the whole "Made by PC gamers, for PC gamers" and called it a joke. But there is another way to look at it too. If they were not able to get the walk function to work on PC by the game's release day, then they would have been faced with two options. Release it for the Console systems only, and prevent all PC gamers from being able to play it on the same day because "it wasn't ready for PC yet", which I'm sure people still would have felt was favoring Console systems anyway. Or, release it for PC players at the same time even though some of these functions weren't working yet, which would at least allow those PC players who weren't bothered by it, or could put up with it, to have a chance to play it.

"Why didn't they just push the game's release date back again until they had it all figured out?" some of you might say.

It's not that simple. Every day that Bioware works on the game before it is released they are losing money. They still have to pay all of their employees who are working on it, which is thousands of dollars each day. If you go too long without releasing the game then you run out of funding. On the other hand, if you get the game to a playable state and are able to sell it and start earning a profit, that in turn gives you more funding that you can then allocate towards working on the problems you weren't able to finish before the release day.

Even though we can say "it'd be nice if a Bioware employee came here and informed us of this themselves so we didn't have to sit here in the dark wondering", most of their PR department probably don't know the specifics of the technical difficulties and wouldn't be able to answer the slew of inevitable questions people would pour at them. I know their customer service doesn't know anything about the work being done on the project, they all just direct you to the forum here and tell you to post your issues here and that the developers will read them. Those Bioware employees that *do* understand the technical problems aren't here playing 20 questions with us because they are actually working on resolving those problems. And I think most of us would agree we'd rather have them there fixing the problems that much quicker than socializing with us here.

Besides, if you've ever seen a company representative posting on a troubleshooting forum board like this one, it's like jumping into shark-infested waters. Tons of players just dump the blame of all their problems on the one representative, and use them to vent all their anxiety and anger on. It gets pretty vicious. Can't really fault them for not being very keen on doing it.

If I recall correctly, Kingdoms of Amalur didn't have a walk toggle on PC either. I wonder why it's such a problem, if it technical difficulty is indeed the reason for it.

Stormpyre's post explains it quite well, and I'm under a similar understanding of the situation.

We had a small discussion about it here:

http://forum.bioware...ncerns/page-267

Besides, Mark on twitter mentioned they had to pull it from patch 2 due to issues which a member had already guessed on the above thread. Either way I'm sure we can expect it for patch 3.

It would be very nice if they did, and I think it is fairly likely. But it all comes down to whether they determine the causes of the problems they are having and find a viable solution to each one in time for the patch. We can only hope. If nothing else at least we can take reassurance from the fact that it is evident they intend on working on it until they figure it out. The problem is not being ignored.

An answer saying "no" is better than no answer at all.

So, good on Mark that he answered some of the question, but it could've been done 3 weeks ago.

I hope they sort it out and add walking (hold-to-walk if they can't figure out a way implement toggle properly).

Still though, it's doesn't really look good when an AAA studio can't figure out how to get run/walk to work...  No offense.

He didn't say no, he said they are working on it, and have been since at least Nov 25 (when Mark first mentioned the team was on it)

As for why it may be so difficult for them; it's the engine, and if you want to look at the history:

DAO and DA2 both used inhouse engines, and these engines go all the way back to Neverwinter Nights. No issues with tac cam/PC controls/etc...

ME used the Unreal 3 engine, and remember it took 1 year before the first one was ported to PC. With ME2 they obviously had more experience with the engine and on a technical side ME3 was also a breeze, both two were crossplatform releases.

DAI is using the Frostbite 3 engine, completely new to them, and it's across five platforms. From looks of things it's likely they bit off more than they can chew.

Now we can theorise all we like in regards to why proper PC controls didn't make it on release, console favoritism (4 platforms VS 1)? Oversight? Marketing lies? Whatever, but regardless of how they ended up here in the first place, it seems when it comes to patching a walk toggle post-release they are still working their way around the complexities of Frostbite 3.

But hey, they're on it, and it was a planned feature for patch 2. Good thing they pulled it in my opinion considering it would have just added a whole lot more problems to the ones they are having already with the new patch. Personally I'd rather they make sure the walk feature is tested and working properly.

I find this really weird...How come this is such a huge problem to implement? I played a little of BF4 and I remember being able to run/walk/crouch... So what the hell is the actual problem? Bioware is working with DICE and with the guys from BF4 who has experience with the engine... And they STILL can't figure it out? Even thought the mechanic IS already there (beside the analog stick input of the controller). This is evident in the few occasions where your character has a scripted walk, or when you walk into the edge of a map, such as desert terrain.

Wouldn't it be funny if the modding community figure this out before the actual dev team...

So they thought "Oh let's just pull it from the PC controls, no one will notice". Surprise, surprise! It's a damn near game breaking omission!

(edit)

And what is even worse, no one bothered to come here on THEIR OWN DAMN FORUM to inform us of the situation! Oh but we love our fans.....Nonsense!

I am also in a job where I support end users and this type of behaviour from Bioware is simply NEGLIGENT! It actually proves that they do NOT care about their fans. All they really care about is lining their pockets with OUR money!

Hey, but still we remain loyal and we buy their games....but in the end we're the bad guys. Go figure.

They did implement it but pulled it once they realised it had issues. Also, BF4 doesn't have the systems that DAI has, Bioware had to convert an FPS engine into an RPG. For an indication of possible issues check my post #469 on this thread, where I linked to the discussion, which seems to co-align with what Mark has mentioned thus far.

As for why it wasn't there to begin with... well :) I'm sure we're going to have plenty of opinions about it. Unless Bioware would like to do the honors and set the record straight.

In my opinion they need to hire a Josephine to liaison between the developers and the fans, especially in this turbulent time where players are encountering alot of issues and seek alot of answers (that the devs may not have much time for at present)
