I just booted up a new game and after finishing the character creating, I ended up in a playable area where the spiders were chasing you up the tower/steps. Is this actually part of the game, the first time I started a character I woke up being questioned by Cassandra. 
I think gametrailers actually pointed this particular problem in their review. Unfortunate you stumbled upon it.
Edit: Wait, no. What you're experiencing is entirely different from what I'd mentioned. No, that's not normal.
Same thing is happening to me. I can't fix it and neither Bioware or EA Answer are responding to my posts. Please help! What is the fix for this?

Try being stuck in Scotland and having to wait till Friday to play 
hopefully it sorts itself out for you m8 looks like it could be quite dispiriting

Well I just recorded the whole thing, I explored for a good hour, what was really cool is you can *almost make it to the beginning area! I was in the vicinity of the green comets way up on the mountaintop looking down at the village or whatever (haven't even got that far lol!), but sadly I ran into an invisible wall after falling off a cliff. I'll upload it to youtube and post a link here if you guys wanna check it out.
I also tried to climb the damn stairs to see if I could find Andraste herself, but you can't make it up halfway.
for now, this is as far as I could get, invisible wall, and huge rocks behind me, but you can see the village in the upper left. 
^ That's quite the dip (referencing fps).
Edit: Ah, I see.
Oh, the fps was displaying on vlc player and currently animating up to 30. Game runs at 60 (for that section) on an 8320 and 660 with ssao, low as and shadows on med.
Are you using the override commands to unlock the cutscene FPS from 30?
I've read a couple of other boards where people who did this were seeing both this particular bug as well as issues with multiplayer desync.

Bioware, perhaps a patch should be introduced to unlock the 30-frame cap on PC altogether. It's a bit strange to run the game at a perfect 60 fps on ultra, only to have it suddenly halved whenever we enter a conversation cutscene =/
It was the 60fps script, I was able to recreate the error by using the script and shipping all introductory cutscenes
Same thing happened to me the first time. I had to restart at a lower graphics setting. Not as good looking, but it plays.

they introduced the 30fps cap to stop issues, as far as im reading it they are working on a patch that hopefully enables them to unlock the 30fps limit in cutscenes
OK, here is the PC FIX. I re-installed the preorder DAI Deluxe PC 4 times to make sure. DO NOT EXPORT TAPESTRY FROM DRAGON AGE KEEP!!
When I didn't accept export of tapestry or go to the KEEP to export the tapestry; then I accepted the default story offered at the beginning of the game and everything worked fine!!
I saved character-1 after making it to the bridge in the prologue. I exited then started a new character-2 accepting the KEEP tapestry and it put me STUCK in the fade again.
But, I exited again and tried to make a new character-3 without accepting the KEEP and I was STUCK in the fade for the third character-3 too.
However, I went back to the save after exiting a third time and loaded character-1 saved at the bridge and she was there perfectly in the story line. SO, the problem, at least on the PC side, is DO NOT EXPORT OR ACCEPT EXPORT OF TAPESTRY AFTER FIRST INSTALL OF GAME OR YOU"LL HAVE TO RE-INSTALL. I hope this helps!!

I definitely didn't have that problem, I used the keep to export everything and it worked ok once I took out the 60fps script.

I started with a human female and had the fade problem then I started a dwarf female and it worked okay. Now I'm doing a qunari female so I don't know if that was the problem.
