8 hours in, and frankly I am controlling Cassandra much more as my main go-to character. Its really quite fun to be a warrior this time, constantly managing threat, managing guard, and actively blocking enemy attacks to generate more guard, so kudos to Bioware for making the warrior an interesting and active play style.

But man do I hope the mage gets more interesting later on, especially with the Knight Enchanter spec. Not sure if this is a symptom of early game or not, but so far it involves casting a spell, auto attack, waiting for mana to regen, cast another spell once the severely limited mana pool finally regens, and auto attack again.

Yes many game reviewers also said that being mage is very boring xD

Archer seems like fun from Joe's review's at least it seems so.

I only played mage once to get the trophy, but wasn't it basically that way in DA:O at the beginning too? Use up mana, then staff attack until you had more

Sounds pretty much how mages have always been in DA. That is, until later when you have the gear/stats to go full god mode and can just cycle through your spells infinitely until everything around you disintegrates.

Well it would be nice to finally see a the other classes finally be as engaging as the OP mages of this series.

Another reason for using the tank character is that the AI knows bugger all of how to do it. It can kill enemies just fine, but when it comes to using shield block, parry etc. you're better off doing it yourself.

I've never understood how managing threat works. I play mages.

I always started as a mage in the other DA games, but this time I went with an Archer rogue because I loved the damage output from range.  But I do agree...warrior is a lot of fun in this new game, much more than the others.

OP didnt you just describe how mages have worked for last 2 games

Like if you wasnt waiting on a CD you was chugging potions for more mana an if you never had potions you had to basically regen it, maybe but most probably im remembering wrong eh

I agree with the OP on early mages being boring.

I am also not a fan of the spinny mage basic attack, and this is what the mage spams 75% of the time. Spin, spin, spin. UGH.

I too am hoping the KE will help. At least then I'll be spamming neat looking magic sword attacks.

I think it's true for DA2, but I never played a mage there.

In DAO, blood mage specialization solved the mana problem and you could add another specialization on top of it. Of course, it was OP as hell, but...

I'm about 8 hours in, too, so I assume we're about the same level. I also haven't controlled any party members other than myself (other than brief moments in tactical view):

I wasn't happy with combat until about level 4 or 5. Most of what I picked up before that were passives on my way to get Static Cage, which made things a lot more interesting. Then I took Immolate and now I just trap enemies in a cage and blow them up. Its fun.

Damn. I seriously still cannot decide between Mage and Archer. Only have one more day to wait in Australia.

I always go Mage but Archer (even DD) just looks like heaps of fun.

Take note: Archer Rogue seems a LOT stronger and more fun with base trees. However - specialization skill trees for mages are 10/10 in their power, fun and utility. However as an archer rogue, you are better of not taking a specialization at all. All rogue specs seems either off/weird for an archer, uninteresting and kinda boring and unimaginative tbh. I am currently torn to pieces over the same choice. Because archer playstyle and power seems to outshine mage. However - once specializations are unlocked - mages becomes expontentially more fun while the archer is left with a sour taste in the mouth.

So... not much has changed for Archers, then?  Oh, favorite playing style, will you never be catered to?

But it's nice to hear the Mage Specializations are impressive.

I was set on being a Mage, but after reading all of this, I'm now really conflicted between archer, 2handed warrior or Mage.
Dammit! Anyhow I still have till Friday to decide

and actively blocking enemy attacks to generate more guard,

...could you elaborate on what you mean by 'actively blocking'? This scares me a little.

I don't think what you describe sounds any different from what mages have always been in DA.
