Basically for any mage character type, what do you believe the must haves are? (DPS/Defense/Spike Damage)

For myself for all Mage Types here are the BASE must haves,

Frost Step>Winter Stillness and most important "Barrier".

Keeps your mana up, cooldowns faster, allows you to stay alive with a large absorb and run away quickly.

I am more curious of builds people are using right now. I am using a main combo of Fire/Lightning with the base above with another mage whom is Ice/Spirit to keep barrier up as much as possible.

How does Winter Stillness actually work? You need to do absolutely nothing for 3 seconds? Or just not walk with your character for 3 seconds?

And if you give that power to the AI how do they use it?

Right now I'm having fun in the fire tree. Respec's for the other fire starter ability then went straight for fire mines. They're pretty beast.

Winter Stillness works by standing still for 3 seconds. Since mages can't move anyway while attacking, it's not that bad. Wish it were two seconds, though.

I'm running with the storm tree at the moment, with a dalliance into Immolate and Winters Grasp for the sake of variance.

I haven't grabbed barrier yet on my Inquisitor as I tend to use Solas (or Vivienne now that I've grabbed her) as my support style mage.

Based on what I've seen in the multiplayer, I think Spirit + Knight Enchanter could be pretty unstoppable. Knight Enchanter has a very nice mana regen in it and some survival skills.

But, I have no idea how or where to get Knight Enchanter.

I really want a real-time offensive mage build. I don't want to pause and aim every spell, I want to roll in over-the-shoulder mode almost the whole time if I can. Does anybody else have a build for this?

Here is what I am doing. The first three spells in the Storm tree are perfect for this style of play. Chain Lightning is basically AOE without aiming. Energy Barrage is homing and Lightning bolt can be upgraded to hit targets closeby. The only downside to these spells are that they are mana drainers, but hey there is a neat passive that increases damage when you are drained.

Now I want another attack spell in another tree because of resists. Immolate is outrageous damage, low cost, and quick recharge. I have to aim but I can live with that, since upgraded it does 1600% damage over 8 seconds. The alternatives without aiming are Winter's Grasp and Flashfire. Neither are very powerful and they are single target.

I probably have to take Barrier and Peaceful Aura to survive. I wish Barrier would auto-aim on self, but it doesn't. Can one just Fade-Step the threats away without using Barrier? I could also try Fade-Step and Peaceful Aura to see if they will forget about me when I am gone for two seconds.

I am tentatively working for the Rift Mage specialization to get Firestorm and Stonefist. Since I have nearly maxed Storm anyway, I will probably get Static Cage for dangerous situations. If I have to aim land heavy-hitters in big battles, that isn't such a big deal. I just don't want every battle to be a pause-fest. I almost gave up on a mage until I came up with this plan.

The big problem with a real-time build is all of the spells cost 50+ mana. Mana never increases, so how much can gear help with regeneration?

You just need to not move, you can still attack and cast as long as you don't run around.

some casts seem to reset it, like barrage makes your character take a step back.

I just unlocked Knight Enchanter and re-specced to unlock all of it's abilities... So far, so good(though I've only gotten to play for about 15 minutes with it). Not sure what other tree I'll spec into... Both ice and lightning seem to have talents that would compliment KE... Frost step seems like it would be super-useful as a quick gap closer especially.

I was going to pick up barrier, but between Dorian(specced for support) and the skill that gives you barrier when you attack, I don't think I'll need it. I'm definitely going to craft a staff that gives Guard on attack so I can start the fight with a few staff attack to build up even more protection.

Does anyone know how Bioware was able to cast auto attack magic while moving like in this video?

And as an added bonus, where one might acquire those robes the inquisitor is using in there?

I'm trying to decided whether to focus on one elemental tree or mix and match. So far, I've been having my PC focus on the Frost Tree.

If you refer to the pause when you try to do an AOE spell, you can turn that 'auto-pause' off in the menu. So try that out and now it is all in real time and it doesn't even pause when doing them. Don't know how that work yet I am planning to roll a mage now.

In Origins and DA2, my mages focused on Entropy and Spirit because I loved my Walking Bombs.  I was extremely disappointed to learn that Walking Bomb is reserved for a specialization.  So I plan to focus on Winter/Spirit Magic until I can unlock and play the Necromancer Specialization.

I was thinking of going Spirit/Storm until I can unlock Necromancer, then respec and go deep Spirit/Necro.  Those seem to have some tactical and fun possibilities.

Question for someone that has created a knight enchanter - does spirit blade count as a regular attack or as a spell.  Just wondering whether clean burn (inferno) or gathering storm (storm) is more synergistic.

With Barrier, sometimes the focus starts way far away from you, and pulling it toward you in real-time is not practical. With something like Immolation, you can do it, but it is really hard to land on more than one target.

Now I will say this, I have tested it, and Fade-Step + Peaceful Aura takes away almost all aggession toward you. So if you go in nuking and suddenly everyone is chasing you, a Fade-Step will essentially take all the focus from you. So a run and gun mage is feasible for the most part.

I went straight for Revive, but it looks wasted if I choose Knight Enchanter.  Now I'm going down the fire tree to Fire Mines.  It seems like having a variety of damage types is important due to resistances and immunities?  I wish there was a key to quickly switch staves in combat.

I'm gonna make an elf mage.... RP wise, which is better?

I like Solas's set up,  I prefer lighting or fire....
