I had no idea Dispel could be used like that. I got to try that.
It sounds like Knight Enchanter is the power tree. I really want Resurgence and Spirit Blade, but I have very fond memories of Walking Bomb.

It's a little strange to me that they put resurgence in the specialization that is already the strongest in terms of single target damage and survivability. It's also a big shame that the A.I. isn't smart enough to use spirit blade effectively or else you could run two with Vivienne in your party.

If only we could have setup Tactics as we could in the previous Dragon Age games! Then we could direct Barrier to be cast, then Spirit Blade etc. etc. as we wished
The AI isn't great with KE, but isn't terrible either if you limit the abilities it can use and make sure the Blade/Fade abilities are preferred status. My biggest issue is the lack of situational awareness that the AI has with the KE. It either stays exclusive at range if you have to many ranged abilities allowed or it stays exclusively in melee if you have only a couple of them.
Actually, all the AI have issue with where they stand.
On topic.. the more I play, and the more I read on the forums, the more inclined I am to become a Rift Mage. I've Knight Enchanter (Arcane Warrior) in multiplayer and it is great fun. But the melee combat can be clunky sometimes and I feel more comfortable at range.

I've been playing with a Rift mage and I think soon many people will realize just how powerful they are.
Running my necro with
Fire Mine, Immolate, Wall of Fire, Fade step, Haste, Barrier, Walking bomb and Spirit Mark
I use Solas as a Spirit/Rift Mage to keep up barriers, dispel, CC and weaken enemies. I have both cass and blackwall tanking, using taunts and bodyguard to spread damage between them, between them and solas it's rare for actual health damage to occur. I meanwhile blow things up. If they aren't fire resistant they drop really really fast then the walking bomb chains start going off. I really wish I could just stand in the middle cackling like a mad man as things explode all around me.
I've been trying really hard to justify a rogue in my party but it's not been working out so well ![]()
I play as a good mage on normal on the xbox one. I am presently level 13, just got my second perk in the KE, and I am the only mage in the group. I run with Cassandra, Cole, and the Bull.
I use
Spirit - barrier, peaceful aura, transmute magic, dispel, fortifying blast, mind blast and strength of spirits
Inferno - immolate, wildfire, flashpoint and clean burn
Winter - winters grasp, winters chill, fade step, winter stillness
KE - spirit blade, combat clarity. fade shield, fade cloak, veiled riposte, and knight protector
I do not have all the perks yet, but that is my list, and so far I am doing good.
Spirit Mage with all the elements most tier 1 spells from the 3 elements KE specialist mage ![]()
Knight Enchanter/Fire/Barrier.
I destroy everything in my path and the symmetry with the passives and KE is amazing.

Question, am I reading the Chaotic Focus description correctly, meaning a defensive barrier bonus of +50%? If so, does it stack with Strength of Spirits passive ability too?
Chaotic Focus destroys 50% of your own barrier in exchange for more damage on your fire spell. It doesn't buff your barrier; it consumes it.
I use immolate, chain lightning, winter's grasp, and Barrier. I then proceed to get the passives within those trees. Then I unlocked Rift mage and put all those abilities as the next 4 powers. I still use immolate, chain lightning, winter's grasp, and Barrier at level 20. Still very powerful spells. I also run with one other mage that is deeper into one of the elemental trees. I rather enjoy being a jack of all trades with the elements AND using Pull of the Abyss to unleash those spells on a nice neat grouping.

Resurgence is an interesting focus ability... I just don't get why it's on the KE spec. I can't think of a less useful ability for a class that can solo the whole game than an ability to burn Mark of the Rift charges on resurrecting your squadmates.
Then again, the other specs have equally mismatched focuses.
Maybe it's to provide a little group utility, since the KE is a bit lacking in that area compared to the other two. (Necro has Panic for CC and combos, Rift Mage has knockdown/weaken and Pull of the Awesomesauce)
The KE already has Disruption Field which can provide a bit of group utility given enough imagination, and can always pick up Static Cage, Barrier etc etc, just like any other mage, if that's what is desired.Maybe it's to provide a little group utility, since the KE is a bit lacking in that area compared to the other two. My mage is 11 or 12 currently, and I'm running with KE + Spirit. Currently have KE tree filled entirely and Barrier + Upgrade with the passive below that. I'm running an all mage party with Solas playing Debuffer via Rift Mage and Ice/spirit, Viv is crazy psycho fire, and Dorian is Necro/Fire/Lightning. All of us have barrier, and everyone but me has Peaceful Aura and self-barrier. I'm the "tank" of the group blasting into melee (After using Barrier) and use Spirit Blade + Fade Shroud (upgraded) to do quick damage and ending with disruption field before finally letting everyone else attack. Dorian with horror controls things so well and Solas freeze and debuff makes damage much more doable for my squishy mates. My role isn't glamorous or exciting, but it is necessary to keep my group alive and casting. I'll soon be dipping into the Ice tree for Fade Step (+upgrade) and for barrier freeze, may also grab Wall of Ice/Ice Mine mostly to get to Ice Armor so I can use cold for even more protection. Using a home-made staff with heal on hit and heavy Constitution as well as armor with guard on hit. Also have Solas with guard on hit for his staff and Viv is using a Grand Enchanter's staff I believe. Can't remember what Dorian is using
No problems so far and I had little trouble with the Ferelden Frostback battle, which I was worried about, so that's a plus.
I always go with KE and I love my Inquisitor being so OP that there is no doubt that his/her combat prowess is second to none.
So with that being said... I cheat.
I use the Amulet of Power glitch in Crestwood to unlock every single ability (mostly for the passives) in all mage trees.
I spec my Seer Staff to where it has 207 DPS and I increase my crit chance/damage as much as possible through crafting so that I am dealing crit damage more time than not.
I then approach a group of baddies solo, fade cloak, start spamming spirit blade, uncloak and deal massive damage, continue spamming spirit blade while my barrier is now essentially untouchable, while generating guard per hit, and then rinse and repeat once fade cloak is regenerated.
Is this OP as hell? Yep! Does the game get boring for me? Nope! Not for me... I'm weird like that I guess. I like my hero to be as OP as possible and dominate all enemies.
With 13 skillpoints this is what I enjoyed most early on:
Veilstrike (crowd control)
Punching Down (upgrade for Veilstrike - essential to apply weaken)
Stonefist (spirit damage)
Shatterstone (upgrade for Stonefist - essential to apply weaken)
Restorative Veil (passive - essential to keep mana up)
Energy Barrage (I favored using a cold damage staff since I didn't pick any cold spells - great for abusing fade touched procs)
Chain Lightning (electric damage)
Immolate (fire damage)
Flashpoint (crit procs for no cooldown)
Clean Burn (reduced cooldowns)
Barrier (defense)
Peaceful Aura (I actually notice threat without it so I like having it)
Guardian Spirit (emergency life saver)
Mark of the Rift (Focus ability - free)
This basic set up gives me everything I need for the rest of the game. Everything else gained is just gravy. Upgraded Stonefist and Veilstrike give me consistent Weaken uptime so Restorative Veil keeps mana filled. Flashpoint and Clean Burn help keep me casting more and basic attacking less. Energy Barrage is awesomesauce, especially when using fade-touched procs like 2/3/5 guard on hit, 1% hp on hit or 10% chance for 3/4/5 Hidden Blades. This build also gives me a way to deal all of the damage types so no foes are particularly resistant to me. Veilstrike and Stonefist keep foes on their butts a good amount of the time so other CC isn't really required.
It only get better as you get more points. After the above stuff I grab:
Encircling Veil (passive - duration bonus on status effects vs. weaken)
Twisting Veil (passive - damage bonus vs. weaken)
Smothering Veil (passive - stronger weaken)
Pyromancer (passive - longer dots and panic)
Fire Mine (huge fire damage - requires some finesse to maximize - works well as an immediate follow up to Veilstrike)
Wildfire (Immolate upgrade - more damage is good)
Searing Glyph (Fire Mine upgrade - the dot is nice vs chunky boss type foes and dragons not resistant to fire)
Conductive Current (passive - more damage based on mana deficit)
Energy Bombardment (Upgrade for Energy Barrage - resistance debuff)
The main thing I think is important is gearing. I focused on getting my crit chance up to at least 30% before anything else. After that I pushed crit damage up where possible. I eventually ended up with over 50% crit rate and over 100% crit damage which really plays well with the way this build is designed. Using the 5 guard on hit on my armor and heal on hit on my weapon I was basically unkillable without being a KE.
Is this solo or in group? If solo, how do you deal with multiple ranged enemies? That was the big problem for me when mucking around on Solas. Pretty awesome aside from that, though.
Just began my KE wit Fire mine, immolate, barrier..... it's not ba LOL
Want better staff for it
