Hello Inquisitors.

I've read a lot of bad and positive reviews of DAI but there seem to be one topic that appears all the time - PC performance and controlls.

Apparently DAI have poor M&K controlls especially in tactical view and framerate can jump from 20 to 40 even on quite decent PC's.

So, my question is - How does the game work for you? Do the controlls seem awkward and clunky or is it OK?

I am not interested in story review or how how "open" world is awesome, just pure PC performance.

Thanks

PS: No, I'm not going to buy this game anytime soon, I got burned too often.

I don't trust nither BioWare nor EA that's why I ask this questions so I can decide if to buy it next year or not.

From what I have read so far, people are making a really big deal out of really small things that just need getting used to.  And I kinda played DA:O like they want me to play DA:I already, so I expect zero problems and just a minor period of adjusting.

I think this is a bit harsh, the KB/M controls have been gimped and for those of us who prefer this method of control its a major annoyance.

Controls are clunky and awkward. I can get used to them after a while, but they still need more work in my opinion.

Performance for me has been fine on ultra with my Titan. Cutscenes are currently capped at 30 FPS at the moment, but reddit apparently already has a workaround if it bothers you that much.

They're not a disaster, but they're not good. I expect improvements to be patched in.

Performance for me has been fine on ultra with my Titan.

I have a comparable card (R295x2) and my performance has been fairly bad, but I haven't tried it yet with the newest beta driver (released yesterday). I imagine that will make it much better.

I have to agree with Psychevore.

The controls have changed a bit, and there are some mouse button mapping issues.

(I'd say loot button, tac cam, and the mouse button mapping biggest issues to me the more I think about it)

But mainly the gripes associated with the controls seem to be related to 1) people not taking time to learn the new controls 2) not remapping what buttons they can to what they want to. (although, I thought the controls for DAO and DA2 worked fine, no idea why they changed what wasn't broken to begin with)

I played 4 hours last night, and by the time I finally decided to go to bed my only issues were related to not having remapped 'jump' off the spacebar and getting it through my thick skull that left mouse was attack.

Performance issues. Kind of seem weird to me.

I'm playing on a laptop from 2010, a Toshiba Qosmio x500 s1811.

And I didn;t even really expect to be able to play the game.

Lo and behold.....I CAN play.....on medium settings, with some stuttering, and frame rate drops, long load times. (I have a 1.73 Ghz CPU and a Geoforce 460M graphics card) But I am not getting any issues so far with the game freezing, not loading, audio issues, weird visuals, crashing, overheating.

But I probably just have low expectations due to having a low-end system for this game and I'm just super excited that I can even RUN it.....I'm going to be updating drivers tonight to see if that heps with some of the stuttering (I think I'm at least one update behind) and paying attention to what my framerate is and the drops I get.

But we will see when my new system arrives on Friday and I get it all set up if I am having these same issues......

Controls aren't very good. Some weird decisions, TacCam is not very well implemented (it's a bit tedious to use and doesn't zoom out properly).

As to performance, I run with GTX 660, play a mix of Ultra and High with disabled antialiasing (can;t say it's really required on Ultra textures + ultra mesh) and I haven't run into many issues. Some framerate drops, a little bit of stuttering at the beginning of some cutscenes, nothing major or gamebreaking.

I have about 40-50 fps, which is not ideal, but not entirely bad either, considering my slightly outdated card and high/ultra settings.

The game is very good, aside from some controls issues and some weird design decisions.

I have an R7 250 and most things are on medium, some low and some things turned off. The tactical camera I haven't even used since im on normal I havent needed it yet. Melee is a bit weird because of the no auto attack so I enjoy ranged a lot more.

For my PC (4ghz 4770k and 780 Ti), the cut scenes are extremely choppy, but the rest of the game runs perfectly fine even with everything set to "ultra."

The tactical cam is a bit clunky, but once the game gets going the fps drops for convoes arent noticeable . 750ti

I havent looked at my FPS

Looks like they are looking into the cutscene issue.

I guess with how sad my system is right now I just didn't really notice any cutscene issues.

Husband's comment re: me being able to play on my old laptop "So does that mean you're going to return the new one?"

Me: "No, I wouldn't want to play through hundreds of hours like this, I want the graphics as pretty and as smooth as I can. But this is fine for now!"

I think that's normal that people don't want a dumb down version of the Mouse+Keyboard controls while the other previous games were doing fine and were more intuitive.

2600K and 780 on ultra without any problems at all for me. 8 hours and I had lag for 2 seconds, only one time. And M&K controlls aint bad once u get used to them. My biggest problem was getting used to left mouse button was attack hehe. Anyway, I don't undertand the complaints as I'm very happy with everything so far :P No problems with tac cam either :P

Personally, I'm not complaining.

I just didn't expect it to be a button mashing game. I guess I can't enjoy it while sipping a cup of tea like the old DA games.

Newest NVidia drivers brought the game up to par in terms of frame rates, no problems there.  I agree that the new controls are mainly just a matter of getting used to.  My only real gripe is the lack of a walk toggle when using keyboard. Sprinting 100% of the time is bugging the crap out of me.

I found out, that holding R works better for me than left mouse :P. It's very close to hotkeys for abilities and with mouse you can sometimes click next to an enemy and miss with a staff projectile.

Oh, R is the auto-attack key?

I have to bind it to my mouse4 or mouse5 button then.

There are pretty severe "clunkyness" issues with m+kb controls. They can be dealt with but hoping for a patch ASAP to fix. It plays much better if you plug an Xbox 360 controller in but then you lose the feeling of being on a pc imo. The tactical cam is a joke, the party members constantly ignore commands and either spam spells or don't use them at all if deactivated, this makes combos essentially impossible.

the camera doesn't zoom out far enough for my tastes but that's not game breaking.

Closing rifts and looting is aggregating at best. You can no longer click and have your character run over and loot the object you must manually walk over and go through the tedious loot animation. Rifts are almost impossible to close in tactical mode causing you to break it to accomplish the task and also suffers same as loot you must walk over to it and get a really crappie upwards looking camera angle to click it most of the time.

there is also a severe gender issue on PC when creating your character select your CLASS first then swap between genders a few times and make sure the card actually changes! If you are not careful you end up with a male character that the game thinks is female or vice versa. If this happens devs stated you must start over to fix it. I've lost 2 games worth of 3 hours of progress before I discovered the fix!

all in all I still think it's a good game but it is marred with glitches, bugs, performance and control issues that desperately need patched to make it great. I'm still super annoyed that it plays 20x better if I use a controller

all of this is my opinion you just asked for reviews

R is not auto attack it just functions same as left mouse. You can either click it over and over or hold it down for continuous attacks. If you want "auto attack" aka continuous attack just hold down left mouse or R.

also you can not map ANYTHING to mouse 4 or 5 it's a huge complaint atm

To keep it short and sweet, game is great overall so far, controls on PC are "clunky and awkward" compared to DA:O.

Oh well.

Thanks for the clear reply BTW. That just answered every question I had.

Game runs between 45fps (medium) and 20fps (ultra) on my four year old rig.

As for controls, I don't think it's entirely fair to say the control issues are entirely "learn to play" issues. To auto-attack, you either need to press and hold the mouse button or use the tac cam, which is hampered by a poor zoom. The looting system is also a bit cumbersome and feels input-heavy. Overall I do think it's something that could become second-nature (especially as you poor 100ish hours into it). I agree with those who've said the controls are not as clean as before. I disagree with those who say it's awful or terrible or gamebreaking. It's not.

I believe it works better, because:

1) It doesn't wear down that poor mouse button.

2) You don't have to hold mouse over the opponent to attack.

Although there should just be an ption to auto-attack like in previous titles IMHO.

mkb is a little wonky for me, but I also have not messed with the keybinds.  But even though they are wonky and I keep jumping or aaing when I want to pause or walk it does get better with time and practice.  It is very much like anything new, especially when there are familiar bits, feels awkward and can be frustrating, but with some tweaking and time it will not be an issue I think.

There are a whole lot of sleep deprived cry babies that haven't adapted to the control scheme(which wasn't all that hard to do).
