I know a few game developers personally, and they have told me flat out that reviewers are bought and paid. It is corrupt as hell. One of the devs I know was even embarrassed when a game he had been involved with making got a 9 or a 10. He new perfectly well it wasn't the quality of the game that got a score that high.

What was the game?  What was the publication that gave it a 9 or a 10?  Give me an example of a known publication taking a kickback for a high-profile game.  If this is some wide-spread, well known issue this shouldn't be hard to provide.

Angry gamer rage on both sides it seems.  This is getting ridonculous.

"Raaarwg! I got my hopes up and the Bioware didn't give me exactly what I want! Raaarwg!"

"Raaarwg! I love Bioware and they can do no wrong ever! Your opinions and criticisms don't match mine so you are wrong! Raaarwg!"

In this kind of debate, everyone loses.

Eeeeeeup i ainr even played 1 second yet. i'll decide if i like it or not.

Not going to post that bit of information, no. As it will get a friend of mine in trouble.

And no it is not hard to find information about things like this. Just google about a bit and you will find plenty.

Right.

"I was unable to advance past the prologue because I bought this game for PC but I do not own an Xbox controller. I wasted $60 on a character generator" 5/10!

Yeah that makes sense. No wait. it doesn't. At all. As much as DA:I probably doesn't deserve a 0/10 score, a 0/10 score is justified if the reviewer was unable to play the friggin game through no fault of his own.

As a user who has never used a controller (I've been playing games on PC since the 70's - I'm 51 years old) - playing this game using a controller would be VERY hard. I don't own a Xbox or PS4. I own a kick-ass gaming PC (and a couple macs for work). And frankly, I get a little pissed when companies think I do. The "just use a gamepad" doesn't sit well with me. I have a pc. With a keyboard and mouse.

Now I managed to play this game despite the crappy PC support. I had to compromise, though by not playing a melee class (playing a mage) but it works. Hopefully BW will add auto-hit (using the WASD keys and the mouse  to following the mob, while pressing 1 - 8 for skills doesn't cut it). And that'll make me happier. Cause I prefer to play warriors. But it's too frustrating to play melee in this game right now.

Until then I'd give this game a 7. At best. But I can understand someone like me not wanting to compromise and giving this game a 2.

It is well known that reviewers are bought or blackmailed by publishers into giving their games good reviews.  Don't be so naive/ignorant.  Educate yourself.

"9/11 was totally an inside job, man!  Don't be so naive!"

Man, for paying off so many reviewers, EA should really gets its money back for SimCity and The Sims 4's scores.

Which of us in this conversation right now actually works in the industry we're talking about?

(Spoiler alert:  It's me.)

Also, the article you yourself linked is about EA paying YouTubers to feature their games.  That's called advertising.

Take a reading comprehension class.  Please.  It is embarrassing.

I just started. I write lore, NPCs, history and things like that for an rpg company. But even if I didn't do that, I could still know developers personally anyway.

True. I just added the first one that showed up on google. Have a look and you will find plenty more like that one about reviewers and gaming sites.

The only thing you'll find is blogs of people treating it as assumed and...

Gamespot's Kane and Lynch scandal from 2007.

You could at least mention WB and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, since that's an explicit "We'll let you play our game early as long as you swear not to say anything negative" situation.

Look, there absolutely is some of that going around.  But it's not particularly widespread, and none of the major outlets are in for it because it would put them at odds with other companies.  Believing the entire game industry is corrupt is the same sort of paranoia nonsense that leads to being a truther or birther.  Ubisoft is one of the biggest publishers in the world.  Why did critics slam Assassin's Creed: Unity?  That game is more important to Ubisoft's bottom line than any other, so you'd better believe if they were paying people off for high marks, that would be their priority.

While I don't feel the need to ride out and fight the hordes of haters on the internet I have to ask how many of those metacritic 0/10 trolls have actually played the game? It's polished and fun, what more can you ask?

Never said it is 100 percent corrupt. Just stating that there is corruption, and that it seems to be growing. Just like in any other industry.

Even if that article is true, I find bought reviews more honest than user reviews.

At least the "bought" ones highlight the good parts while still showing some negatives, no matter how exaggerated or diminished they make them. There is some semblance of fairness, real or not.

Most negative reviews on Metacritic boil down to "This **** is inconvenient / I don't like this one detail" : ZERO.

It's downright hilarious...any review that calls all BioWare characters "one-dimensional" is clearly an idiot and I've seen dozens of those.

Also how can you even rate a game properly without finishing it first? Judging a game by the first few hours is pretty premature, especially in an RPG. Not to mention that most problems are highly subjective and can be fixed through some tinkering. Have mods spoiled people so much that they can't even bother to fix certain issues like simple key remapping themselves?

Dunno why I still come here. I heard about how horrible gamers were after DA2 and ME3 but to see it myself is just...painful

Just stating that there is corruption

There's corruption in everything.  It's hardly a profound notion.  Do you think those MetaCritic users who rate Mass Effect 3 a 0/10 are coming from a level-headed place?  Or the thousands of people who flooded Modern Warfare 2 with 0s because it didn't have dedicated servers?

Game journalists tend to be much more level-headed than users, and that's why I'll always trust them more.  Users tend to default to something either being terrible or amazing with no middle ground, and I have no time for that sort of silly Junior High thinking.

I mostly look at reviews on Amazon. To post a review there you have to have bought the product there in the first place. Odds are the reviews are more legit than on Metacritic, which is a joke.
