Are Mage Inquisitors really overpowered?

Depends on difficulty. For normal it doesent matter what classes you pick. I'm pretty sure you can roll a dice to decide your party and steamroll it.
For hard Id guess archer rogue or knight enchanter is strongest.
For nightmare Id guess a necromancer mage or PC Vanguard+Champion warrior as tank.

Necromancer mage is a beast. DoT, AOE & Pets ftw !

I do like striking at a range, so I see it as a good thing.

So far, no. Then again, I'm on level six. I don't feel overpowered at all. I will say, poor Cassandra earns her pay as she runs down all the foes. The rest of the team hits from a distance.

oooh roninbarista, what race did you pick? What spec will you be running?

I picked human. It was a pure mercenary decision, as I wanted the extra ability point.
I'm still leaning towards Necromancer, but I am sorely tempted to look at Knight Enchanter as a viable option.

Considering I have Solas as near a pure DPS mage, at level 7 my pure DPS two hander feels like it hits far, far harder. I am posting some insane damage number.
But truth be told Cass is the star on my team, cause when she gets her challenge and war cry up and running to build guard truth be told she is nigh unkillable. Mostly because of her I am doing well on hard even when facing guys 2-3 levels above me.

Mages are not about damage, unless we are talking about AoE damage. Mages are the only ones with reliable crowd control (CC) which have low cooldowns and can be used from a range. That's what makes them invaluable.
This is more true on harder difficulties because in lower difficulties you can kill enemies faster therefore you won't need any CC but on higher difficulty you will need CC and quick dispatch of weaker enemies (mages can aoe them), that's where mages come to play. In that scenario having 2 mages in the party is the stronger combination. (a tank warrior, a support mage, a DPS mage, a rogue). And you don't even have to be the mage, you can be any of the roles.

Playing a mage in this game is so underwhelming that I am considering restarting and playing a rogue at this point.

Compared to Origin mages? No, DA: I's mages are quite a bit toned down.
Eh relatively speaking mages were a joke compared to perma immune hasted warriors or god forbid the cunning backstab rogues that can shred bosses in seconds while perma paralyzing.

On what difficulty? Bosses are immune to everything on nightmare and have a large chunk of damage resistance. Mages are always more useful on higher difficulties. Always has been the case. The longer the battle lasts the more the mage thrives. Mages are pretty useless and redundant on easy.

Mages end up doing quite a bit of damage if you know how to combo effectively, it all comes down to playstyle.

Exactly. But if you can mash buttons to end battles who needs combos and strategy? Thats what happens on low difficulties. As i said on higher difficulties mages are vey good. I believe a 2 mage party is best on nightmare accompanied by a tank warrior and rogue.

I highly agree.
I always try to run a 2 mage party (one support, one that blows sh*t up), along with a tank (probably Cassandra), and a dagger rogue. Most times we absolutely wreck everything in our path.

Yeah even if I don't own the game watching people trying to run nightmare on Twitch I can see why 2 mages are going to be useful.

People need to realize that AOE is hard hitting. Why? Because it damages a whole bunch of enemies at once. If you can do 4-5 spells and kill 3 enemies it is way more damaging than doing 4-5 abilities to kill 1-2 enemies as a single target DPS character.
Dropping a fire mine in a group enemies and doing 1,000% weapon damage to all of them vs a hard hitting rogue doing 1,200% damage on a single target.
That's not to say a mage cannot do pretty decent single target damage as well. An interesting ability in itself is that the 4th or 5th basic attack actually spawns 4+ basic attack projectiles for free doing quad basic damage. Not much since basic but still more.
If you play a winter mage, you won't be doing much damage. Inferno will. I can also imagine the focus ability firestorm doing insane damage at highest tier of 8,250% weapon damage combined.
Still it's not the biggest single target damage dealer. But you get added control and AOE master, which as I said hurts several enemies and not just one at a time.
That is my take on it.

Don't go Dual Dagger, it's horrible.

Also, what's your control scheme?

Yes, as you said, "bosses are immune to everything" which meant magic was useless against them, right? Support mages in Origins were redundant aswell since you had access to a million potions.
Rogue was by far the best class in Origins. He could be made virtually untouchable by any type of attack with high dex and magic resistance. There were a few attacks that could hit, like Overwhelm and the spider queens venom spit (they auto hit).
I miss my nightmare solo dwarf rogue... Good times

Immune to magic? Who cares. In DAO you can go blood mage and arcane warrior, immortal and good damage, that's how you beat bosses. Period. The mother in awakening can be soloed with you having FULL HP all the time if you go arcane warrior, blood mage and battle mage and yes on nightmare. That was the most overpowered combination DAO had to offer.

I thought DW Rogue would be the easiest and coolest, until I realized that controls on DAI (PC) are nothing like they were on the previous games.

By the way, is Flashfire useful in any way or is it just crappy ? Is there any reason for me to take it over, say, Fire Mine or Wall of Fire ?
