How do detonations work?

Since there's no documentation on how things work, we'll have to test this out on our own, I think.

EDIT: OK, lots of good info.

Basically, there are 4 primers: STUN (Warriors only), SLEEP (Rogues only), FREEZE (Mages and Tempest Rogue), PARALYZE (Mages).

There are 3 detonators: IMPACT (Warriors and Rift Mages), PRECISION (Rogues only), ELDRITCH (Mages and Templar Warriors).

And primer + any detonator is a combo. For outcomes of these combos, see thrones6 post just below. The short of it is that not all combos are made equal.

• Rupture: Heavy damage over time, ignoring armor

• Shatter: Heavy cold damage

• Discharge: Strong electric damage to all nearby enemies

• Nightmare: Strong damage and causes panicked status

• Weakness: Strong damage and causes weakness status

• Basic combo: Moderate bonus damage

Cross-Class Combos

Warrior stun: Impact Detonator (Warrior, Basic combo),

                      Precision Detonator (Rogue, Rupture),

                      Eldritch Detonator(Mage, Weakness)

Rogue sleep: Impact Detonator (Warrior, Rupture)

                      Precision Detonator (Rogue, Basic combo),

                      Eldritch Detonator(Mage, Nightmare)

Mage Freeze: Impact Detonator (Warrior, Shatter)

                       Precision Detonator (Rogue, Shatter),

                       Eldritch Detonator(Mage, Basic Combo)

Mage Paralyze: Impact Detonator (Warrior, Discharge)

                         Precision Detonator (Rogue, Discharge),

                         Eldritch Detonator(Mage, Basic Combo)

Whoa. That's a wealth of information. Where is it from?

If I'm reading this right, if a Mage Paralyzes, then a Rogue uses a detonator, we get Discharge -- strong electric damage to all nearby enemies.

So...

Panic is not a valid effect to detonate.

Cross-class combos are superior to same-class ones.

Interesting.

I guess you are correct. But the spell purge is non-damaging on its own...

That's nice but this thread is about detonations, not class specializations.

Trying to grok the table. What combination gives Rupture, for instance?

Any rogue detonator ability used on a warrior stunned person, or any warrior detonator ability used on a rogue stunned person.

Actually, that helps a lot because you can see in those charts exactly which abilities can be used as detonators.

I've played two previous installments, and all I know is Winter's Grasp and long shot to shatter.  No idea about all the others.

So from what I see, rogues only have sleep "spells", no stun attacks like previous years?

Rift mage has an impact detonator, so a Rift mage can set off their own paralyze/ freeze as well

Great catch. I didn't notice that until now.

Suddenly the Rift Mage became a lot more interesting!

Tempests can freeze opponents. Anybody know if that's a valid primer for a shatter? It would make sense, since the other two classes both have specialisations with detonators outside of their class.

Yup.  According to the Prima guide, it's a valid primer.

Upgraded, spell purge will do 600% weapon damage when it dispells an effect like barrier. So when fighting demons or mages with barriers, Cassandra can detonate her own combo for some pretty hefty damage. Just have her stun an enemy with barrier and cast an upgraded spell purge on them. Enjoy the extra damage and weakness status on the enemy.

Very cool. Still ONE second isn't a whole lot of time to pull off a combo.

Which is why they gave us the "freeze the action to set up your combos" button. (IIRC, they call it "Tactical Camera", or some such)

Yes. But the difficulty is that Tempest's freeze is reactive. You have to wait for the enemy to hit you first. Makes it more challenging to pull off.

Im confused... you have listed the detonators. But I still cant see how they work. Same with the cross class descriptions. You have listed what they are but not HOW to use them and which skills together causes the effects >.<

For example, how do I know what abilities that utilize shocked enemies for a combo etc.

Sorry if Im just stupid I just dont see how this information explains all the ability combos :(

Not really. With upgraded flask of frost, enemies in melee range are constantly getting frozen. And who does a dual daggers rogue attack with his combo-detonating special attacks? Enemies in melee range. Just using abilities like you normally would, you'll end up triggering quite a few shatter combos "for free". Especially if you have dual-bladed daggers for their AoE murder spree goodness.
