Now that's a tempting option. Unfortunately, solving the puzzle and then turning on Kitty gives just about the biggest increase in favor with Leilana I've seen thus far, a decent increase to Alistair, and only a moderate decrease to Morrigan's favor. I imagine letting the possession happen would have some decidedly negative effects on Alistair and Leilana, though telling Matthias to deal with this stuff himself might not be too bad.
*snip*
You get a decent favor gain with Morrigan if you let the demon possess the child. Morrigan seems to be generally pro-demon throughout the game, it seems.
Oddly, Sten isn't a fan of the kitty demon, but during another possession quest he advises you to let the demon retain possession.

For any fight in a small area, there's an ez-button if you bring a mage with force field:
1) Have tank run into middle of foes and use Taunt
2) Pop a force field on the tank
Your tank is now invulnerable, and he retains aggro. If he doesn't have Taunt yet, then at least have him pop Threaten, and let him get in a few shots on Kitty before the force field. That should keep her interest long enough for you to finish off the smaller demons, then focus-fire the boss.

the fight was pretty tough, as I recall. I had alistair tank her while leilana and I ran down the fire demons. I think I had to pop a revive on alistair at one point, and my PC might have been the only one standing in the end, but I can't remember (I had another fight where this happened and I think i am remembering that fight).
anyway, like people said, the helm you get from her is pretty great. alistair is using that insrtad of the templar helmet I got in the mage's circle.

But a massive disapproval from Alistrair/Leliana.MrGOH wrote...

BTW, Kitty died pretty quickly, Winter's Grasp, Lightning, a few shield bashes and she was dead. The helmet is worth killing Kitty for.

Spoilers:
If you offer to let Kitty go if she leaves the girl alone she'll agree. After you do the puzzle Kitty will go back on her word, but the girl will get scared and run back to her dad before Kitty can possess her.

Touch yourself in an inappropriate manner. God will kill her.
Tips: Balanced parties *shine* in this combat. My tank engaged the Demon. (I had 30 health poultices). Once she was centered on him, my rogue started pelting her with the fire arrows I had saved for the occassion.
I had Wynne petrify and shatter one of the shades and then run as far away as possible and watch over healing.
My off tank destroyed the other shade and then joined the Kitty beating.
Victory was ours. It was a relatively easy battle because you could position your team.. I had more trouble with the dust wraiths before getting there because they materialize in the most *awkward positions*.

This is your problem. You're focusing on her crappy minions while she rips you into pieces. You can't completely ignore her, you have to negate her somehow, either by Force Field (which as you've said works), or CoC, or Paralyze, or Crushing Prison.Twitchmonkey wrote...
I'm on the quest to get Shale, and I have to kill Kitty to do it, but she is absolutely insane and kills me party before they even mange to down one of her minions.
I always just queue up stuns and knock downs and she goes down easy. Her minions are worthless compared to her.

Is kitty an Easter egg? Haven't acquired Shale yet so don't know, but do you fight an actual posessed cat? it'd be cool if you did because it would mean Bio got the zombie kitten easter egg in there!
Or I just look like a dick for suggesting it an Kitty is just the persons name.
There are some "Zombie Kittens" in the game later, but this isn't it. I was wondering what was up with all the kitties. Is this something they do in every game?
