I did the Shale quest later in the game and didn't have a problem killing kitty. To be honest I couldn't figure out the damn puzzle so after 45 minutes of trying I just killed the cat instead. I don't remember how I killed her, but it was certainly a hell of a lot easier than that puzzle IMO.

You must obey the kitty.... you ALWAYS obey the demonic super kitty. Well I always do when i see one and I turned out fine.

You can also go and talk to the father after your initial conversation with Kitty and tell him about the demon. He will go down, solve the puzzle, and get possessed instead.
