Well the sad truth is that this area (Input System, including UI) is often left to individuals/coders with less than epic experience. After-all the cream jobs like render, physics/collision detection, AI and say animation systems to name a few, are usually handed out to the more experienced programmers. Senior or lead coders wont find it stretching/challenging enough is the reason. I'm not saying these other individuals will never be any good but its more than likely they wouldn't have the game-dev experience or be technically competent to be let loose on the more crucial intricacies of game development.

Fresh out of college, my one and only job as a game developer (for an EA subsidiary, no less) was as a UI developer. It was a console game and thankfully it wasn't particularly intricate.

I ended up bailing after only a few months when I got a solid offer to make simulators for the military. No regrets!

My player needs are: point and click gameplay. In DAO and DA2 I used the mouse for everything except esc for the menu and spacebar for pause. I expected DAI to play this way. Had no reason not to!

I appreciate that Bioware is listening to our concerns. I wonder if "looking into it" means that a return to point and click is even a possibility. I need to know from Bioware if my expectations are realistic.

Nimlowyn and I are as one in this.  We are 2 parts of the same leaf looking for the same stream that rushes into the mother river.

That wasn't awkward, right?

Just adding another voice to the chorus...

I loved Origins and was looking forward to Inquisition, however the mouse/keyboard implementation is just painful. For me, combat in this game is like trying to herd cats. With my hands bound behind my back. While inebriated.

While autoattack is sorely missed, even worse is having melee characters fail to follow their targets to stay within striking distance. Movement controls are sluggish and lacking responsiveness. The overall interface seems poorly scaled for a PC, and suspiciously console like. (As mentioned elsewhere - that might be the real problem: this appears to be console game that's been ported to PC.)

Sadly, I've missed my refund window. Only thing to do is add this post to the stack and hope for a grand PC patch.

Good luck, everyone.

I use a R.A.T.5 mouse so for now I can at least bind a button to the W key. Combat is still very much a pain however.

Beautifully, elegantly, delightfully awkward, but very true, apparently. X)

Just adding my support to this thread. The DAO pc version was the best one by far with proper controls, tactics and tactical camera and even mod support. I had many gripes about DA2 but the controls aren't on that list. And now it seems BioWare thinks of the pc version as an afterthought and is unwilling to even add proper controls.

I haven't pre ordered DA:I because I was fearing an overhyped and badly developed PC port. Glad (and saddened) to see I was at least partially right.

Please fix this BioWare. You can't treat your customers like this.

I am sorry to hear that some missed their refund window. I've been a loyal fan since Neverwinter Nights and have been very supportive of Bioware, both with my money and my sentiment. I still am, but I seriously question why such a profound change to controls was not explained prior to launch so that we could make an informed purchase. I would be seriously upset if I missed my refund window, because without point and click gameplay, I CANNOT play this game.

Bioware, I love you, I just don't understand this. I had no reason to expect the controls would be so different from DAO and DA2. If I had known, I would not have purchased Dragon Age Inquisition for the PC. I only just made my refund window. Expectations need to be better managed than this, please.

Thanks for adding to my point my friend - because that's the other side of the coin - when people leave feeling undervalued, underutilised and often overlooked.

These tasks are important but they're not valued and illustrated as such by teams, largely because of elitism. I appreciate not everyone can be PS4/Xbox/PC lead etc..or want to be or responsible for the render engines etc.. but team members need the correct mentoring and guidance to be the best they can be. In fairness its not easy but rotating task lists is useful with the right know how. Sadly there are many leads that don't have a clue about achieving any of this.

Please understand I am generalising here to illustrate my point.  ;)

I also missed my return window. I got stuck at work late :\

Maybe they focused so hard on developing primarily for PC, the "lead platform" for this game, that they forgot to develop it for PC? I don't know how that works, but apparently neither does BW/EA

"PC is basically our lead platform because we all develop on the PC,"
"So we develop on that first and foremost and then we keep the other platforms up and running to make sure they don't fall behind."

Well, the consoles sure didn't "fall behind." Although, given the trouble reports from many console players as well, maybe the PC version really IS the best. Ouch. Not sure if lies or incompetence.

Oh mate...you've got to be kidding me!?

So you guys actually released the PC version of the game with the mouse/keyboard control so utterly and incredibly lame?!

After a couple of hours play, mouse-hand feels like a bad case of arthritis bloomed up.

What the?... it's not like it's the first PC game you've ever made?

What the?...like no one tried it out before release date!?

Any fool can tell after 5 min in-game that it's no damned good and that it won't cut it.

C'mon...this is serious ****, expected more from you guy's.

I won't be playing the game until it's controls are corrected for mouse/keyboard play.

Please!

After a few hours of playing, I can only think that the game was never tested with KB+M. Because I can see no way anybody would be so blind as not to note all the problems it´s got.

Ugh. I can't get over how bad the tac cam is. I honestly don't think it could have been more poorly implemented if they had deliberately tried to do so.

I can live with the rest of the clunky interface, but the tac cam in its current state is a deal breaker for me. It's clearly unfit for purpose, and without it the option of playing this tactical party-based RPG as a tactical party-based RPG is gone too.

I have no interest in playing it as a third-rate action game while my party very inefficiently kills everything around me, so I suppose I'll just wait to see if they address it. Right now I would gladly take DA2's gameplay/UI back - it was vastly superior to this mess.

So disappointed, because so much else about the game looks fantastic.

The PC controls are terrible, they need serious improvements.

Ok, I finally have my copy of the game and I've been playing it for a few hours. My initial remarks:

- it's not THAT bad- at least  as I was expecting after I read all the threads. This might be because I always play DAO with WASD while exploring, of course fully using the option of zooming out, selecting the whole group, active pause and auto attack during combat. BTW, I was sure that they cannot make the gameplay worse than DA2. I was so, so, so wrong.

- tactical camera- annoying as hell. I'm still using it though, it tends to be useful if you have the patience to turn camera right.  However, once you move the camera (using keys), the screen auto-focuses on a character after you click his portrait. Quite annoying, especially when consider camera issues and the need of setting it right again. Of course not to even mention the walls issue + being not able to zoom out enough.

- use of hotkeys- it doesn't bother me that much, except for the lack of auto-attack while being on 3rd person of view. I switched 'v' with 'caps lock' for searching and it's much more convenient to me than original key positioning.

- click&loot, click&walk - My imagination didn't let me believe in the fact that somebody might create a game stating itself to be an RPG one without these OBVIOUS options for PC. Again - Bioware reaches far behind my imagination, it seems.

- what really bothers me is the fact you cannot preview items/abilities on main screen and while looting by holding a cursor on them. It's so obvious for a PC version of an RPG game. I can imagine how irritating it's gonna be after I reach some level and the amount of items + abillities grow...

I agree with what everyone is saying. I too bought DAI, after being a huge fan of Origins. I love Baldurs Gate, IWD, NWN2, and I was so excited for this game. But the tactical controls are so frustrating, after playing DAI for 30 mins I turned it off and started Origins again.

1. Zoom out so I can see whole party and enemies

2. Click to walk / auto-attack

3. click to walk & loot

4. Mouse drag to select party members

5. Make it more like Origins less DA2 which I hate.

It's funny I bought Origins on PS3 thinking it would be cool, but the controls were so bad I bought it again on PC. Now DAI feels like it would play better on PS4 instead of PC, but i'm not buying this game twice.

I've given it a solid 5 hours and I'm tired of fighting the controls. They are simply awful, and the tactical camera is a joke. In an area with a low roof, the tac cam doesn't even go higher than waist level. I'm trying to control a fight while zoomed in to the floor. I'm shelving this game untill it's fixed. Just wish I hadn't missed my refund window. At least Far Cry 4 is fun..

First thing's first: I'm not a complainer, and I never post on forums, but this... this is maddening. I never write crap in caps either, that's how frustrated I am when I say THE GAME SUCKS WITHOUT ANY PATCHES.

So many good things in this game, only to be ruined by something that I never expected bioware would SCREW UP.

-Come on. walk button. It's a beautiful game. I want to absorb and soak in the view. Let me walk PLEASE.

-Camera issues:

1. Why is the camera only controllable from side to side and not up and down in regular view? Especially when I'm coming out of tactical view, the camera angle is still perched up... I HATE THIS. SO. MUCH. FIX IT.

2. Tactical mode is awful. just awful. It made me quit several times. It's impossible in cramped spaces. Focusing on each character for every character switch? Stop screwing PC people over Bioware. Just take the DAO camera modes, EVERYONE OF THEM, and implement it in this game. There was NO REASON for such stupid changes.

3. I restarted my character as a rogue... why? Because you have to drag your damn character up towards the enemy, otherwise it's a missed swing. If the enemies all of a sudden start moving, then my character miss swings. You realize how frustrating this is? What the hell do you take us for? Give us the option to have the character 'attach' to the enemy in ANY MODE.

4. ...Can we please get tactical commands back? Like, the 'if' 'then' equations?

5. Search button? C'mon, DAO shiny shiny objects = loot. Jesus christ.

6. When you zoom out in tact. mode, in DAO, the walls, trees, ceilings, they all are cleared out of view. In this game? Nope. FIXXXXXXX IT

Otherwise, amazing job, seriously. BUT FIX IT.

I really want to play the game with mouse and keyboard.  I searched and found this forum after being frustrated with the controls.  Please take into consideration the comments being made.   Especially focus on...

1.  Allowing the tactical camera to zoom out.

2.  Allow auto attacking so I don't have to click for every attack.

3.  Allow for move to loot with a click.

4.  Allow bindings to mouse side buttons.

5. Basically anything to make it closer to Dragon Age Origins

I so want to play this on my PC and not on my PC pretending its a console.

So it can be fixed and should be for a game like Dragon Age and especially PC gamers ... the control system is an essential element and should be given higher priority than it often is and its pretty fundamental IMHO.

Honestly, this should be their absolute #1 top, emergency priority.

The keyboard/mouse UI, controls, and camera are a travesty.

Have these guys played an MMO over the last 10 years? WoW? Hell, even Bioware's own SWTOR? There is not a shortage of third person RPGs where it is easy to see how movement, camera, and UI should function.

Since we're throwing out credentials, here are mine:

Founder and CEO of the indie studio, Frogdice: http://www.frogdice.com

One of our small, RPG/puzzle hybrid games (Dungeon of Elements) is part of the current Humble Bundle: https://www.humblebundle.com/weekly

We have two games on Steam.

Our oldest game is an 18 year old text MMO called Threshold.

Even our small puzzle games let you bind keyboard commands to mouse buttons. That's just basic.

UI/controls are absolutely vital. If you don't have that nailed, you don't have a game.
