-Camera issues:

1. Why is the camera only controllable from side to side and not up and down in regular view? Especially when I'm coming out of tactical view, the camera angle is still perched up... I HATE THIS. SO. MUCH. FIX IT.

This is the first I'm hearing of this.  You can only rotate the camera left/right?  So it's not a 'free' camera like they've always had?  No tilting up or down?

Really?

I'm not going to reiterate what has already been said which has my gripes covered. I can do RPGs just fine with standard first person controls as seen in shooters or the typical third person controls as seen in nearly every RPG. Ever. I do have to wonder why someone who has even once in their life played an RPG on the PC would think that the control setup deployed in this game is acceptable. I don't have an answer for that but I do know that if I was running this games development and someone came to me and said "Here it is, this is the control setup we want to use for the game" I would fire him/her on the spot. No two weeks, just get out of the building now.

No, I'm not kidding. I have missed my window to return so I'm stuck with the game or I suppose whatever the game becomes. For now I've also got GTA5 and Far Cry to keep me busy and I can afford to let this one sit. I'm hopeful the controls get patched but if not I'm done with this game and I'll be remembering the fact that I was treated with what amounts to contempt.

If you haven't seen it already, there was an official response by Mark Darrah yesterday in the News and Announcement Boards:

No I havent, thanks.

I just bought the game and downloaded it, Im going to wait with the first run until tomorrow so I have the full day to check it out and see if its really messed up, if so I can return it under GGG.

At least they have aknowledged those, but from that answer I would assume that it might take a while to get the controls right, probably until first price drop so Im not sure if Im going to keep my copy.

I just went back and try origins just for comparison, the controls are so much better, I dont understand why they had to change it.  being able to zoom out and move around with the mouse and give commands with the mouse, flows so seamlessly.  and the auto attack, man i miss that.

Sure thing.

After reading people's experiences and watching a youtube video demonstrating the controls, I know I can't play it on the PC as it is. No auto attack and no point and click? What the what? I am really, really surprised at the state of the controls right now. I preordered in May and just made my refund window. I don't know if I'll ever preorder a game ever again after this. I mean I'm sure the game is stellar and I'll adore it when I get around to it, but those controls are, to me, game breaking. I'll have to either wait 6 months for improvements or play on a console.

I'm in the same boat as well, brother.

I've already made about 15 different heads in the CC while listening to the DAO soundtrack.  But as soon as I'm happy with it, I go back to the start again.  I have NO DESIRE to mar any of my DAI experience while being forced to use a console UI.

The first patch better be outstanding.

Really?

Keyboard commands are only for rotation, as normal.

You can move the camera freely if you hold down RMB, again as normal.

Tactical view is different because the camera is looking down (you have a bit of control over perspective, but you can't ever really get the camera to look up).

Got it.

Again, it's hard to extract some people's meaning from their descriptions, especially when they are frustrated about the issue they are describing.

Why, why, why does the pc's Tactical Camera have to be any different from the regular camera??  It just boggles my mind!  I really want to hear a designer explain to me the benefit.  I want to hear him say that that ground cursor, that is exactly the same as the one in the console version, needs to be there, needs to be a part of the pc version, of Tac Cam.  It's clearly one of the fundamental reasons why everything is so different, yet I can't figure out why it's there!

We have a mouse cursor to select things.  What's it doing?  Get rid of it

Basically DA:O and even DA2 had a very good interface.  This is the classic example of the statement "If it isn't broken don't fix it."

I swear that if anyone just played through the first hour alone with the PC controls they would know they were broken.  They either never bothered testing them or were well aware of the problem and didn't care.  Either way shows contempt for the PC market, if not outright hostility.

Which is a real  shame because this is a series which was designed for and catered to the PC market.  And if I recall correctly the PC sales are outperforming any other platfrom on the market.  Which shows how little EA seems to understand there target audience (again).

Anyways, to be completely honst, I have tried playing the game with a controller.  Basically, it is little better, they could have done much better with that as well.  So regardless of which device you use, the UI is a complete mess.

Actually, not as normal.

When you hold down RMB, the camera will jerk massively based on the distance of your cursor location from your character.

If your cursor is a few inches to the right of your character when you click RMB to gain control of the camera, the camera will rapidly jerk violently backwards and your character will start moving that way. It is insane.

The game is somehow registering where you click with your RMB as you telling the game to instantly redirect your character in that direction, when in truth it shouldn't begin changing until AFTER you first hold down RMB.

For comparison, play basically any MMORPG or any other 3rd person RPG.

Wow.  That sounds like they tried to incorporate the traditional camera system from Origins/DA2 but the new engine still requires a focal point on the controlled character and has to redraw the game as if you moved him to whatever point on the screen you happen to have the cursor.

That sounds ridiculous.

People comparing this to Kingdoms of Amalaur (sp?). Just stop. Kingdoms had NO party members that you could "control". (I mean, neither does DA:I... but...). I didn't have the same go of squaring a circle just to do basic tasks in Kingdoms as I do with DA:I. Angry!! Angry and drunk right now!!!

That sounds horrible! Why do the developers feel like they need to keep reinventing the wheel with this game?

About the QWES tac cam pan, can't you remap those keys? Also surely there must be another way to select your characters besides clicking on their portrait?

So much this! I re-mapped the tac keys to be ASDW, but still! What was wrong with the controls of Origins' tactical camera? I shouldn't be using keys to emulate an analog stick on a PC! Seriously, I should be able to use my mouse to pan the camera around when my cursor reaches the edge of the screen.

And what happened to auto-attack? I have to hold down a mouse button now?

I'm assuming it's when they decided to transition everything over to console and they screwed the PC controls up. I think they wanted to balance both but it's just not gonna happen this way. PC should get different controls, views, and angles than console. I did play the console ps3 version and it seemed to work ok as far as controls go but it's terrible on everything else. I think they do need to go back and visit Origins for pc controls.

Can say that i agree with DA2 but I do see what you mean. I think Origins had the best view and control. It does seems like they still aren't trying on PC. I said this before too that I also tried the ps3 version and with a controller it plays ok. I think they need to try revisit Origins for PC controls.

Here's how the game just "worked" for me just now:  I'm running around, camera over my shoulder, using WASD to move and pressing space to jump over rocks.  I can't move move with left+right mouse buttons like other RPGs and the previous DA game, but it's at least semi functional.

I see an enemy up ahead.  So I zoom out to enter tactical mode.  Camera pulls straight up into a tree, and I can't see a thing but tree branches.  I readjust the camera so the tree isn't blocking the view, but it still doesn't zoom out far enough to see the enemies, just half my party, cause the other half is too far away, just like the enemies are too far away.

Its probably not the appropriate repsonse from my side, but your post good Sir is hillarious, laughed my head off.

Also I'm kind of glad I delayed the purchase because of FC4 coming out the same month. Will wait until some kind of sale, by then probably 10% of these problems will be solved...

Another dissapointed PC gamer here...OK got the game (preorder, how stupid it seems now...) I intentionally avoided forums etc, I wanted to have the experience as fresh as possible. Played yesterday and today until I couldn't take anymore, doing anything in this game is a struggle. Really, I have to go to the character menu to see what an ability does now? Is this normal to you Bioware? Have you even heard of tooltips? I won't even mention movement and combat and UI, many others have already.People have stated these things numerous times already I know, but I need to express my frustration. I can't bring myself to play anymore. Pity because underneath the horrid controls and UI is a good game, at least it seems so from what I've seen so far.

Bioware fix this...an AAA title asking premium price and delivering this is something I can't accept. I've played both previous games, I even enjoyed DA2 when everyone else was not because despite its issues it still was a fun game... I was playing that game instead of figthing against it as I am doing with DA:I

This PC fiasco is like baking the world's best chocolate cake, using only the very best ingredients and employing the best cooks money can buy...

Then hiring a chimp to do the icing with a bucket of poop.

Kinda stupid, if you ask me.

The PC controls, combat and UI are so hysterically bad, it's unfathomable how anyone developing(porting) this thought this was okay.

I've asked for a refund. If you fix it to a degree where it is atleast enjoyable I'll buy it again.

But you know what annoys me? That Mark Laidlaw went on and on about how they're all pc gamers at heart, and how much they love the pc platform. Well, what the **** was that?? Just a blatant lie? Because it's pretty ****** obvious that they haven't even given it a single thought. Otherwise they wouldn't have shipped a broken product. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me a fix is incoming. I desperately want to enjoy this game.
