Here's how the game just "worked" for me just now:  I'm running around, camera over my shoulder, using WASD to move and pressing space to jump over rocks.  I can't move move with left+right mouse buttons like other RPGs and the previous DA game, but it's at least semi functional.

I see an enemy up ahead.  So I zoom out to enter tactical mode.  Camera pulls straight up into a tree, and I can't see a thing but tree branches.  I readjust the camera so the tree isn't blocking the view, but it still doesn't zoom out far enough to see the enemies, just half my party, cause the other half is too far away, just like the enemies are too far away.

So now, I have a tactical view of tree branches and two of my character's heads.  Which would be great if I had two people in my party.  And we were fighting a tree.  But we're not.

So I pan around.  Not with my mouse cursor, but with the second cursor.  Yes, there's two entirely separate cursors, and the mouse cursor doesn't pan the screen around when you put it at the edge of the screen, only the second cursor moves the screen.  And I have to use the keyboard to control the second cursor, but instead of being moved with the WASD keys, like virtually every game I've ever played (and Dragon Age), it's moved via QWES- totally backwards from the keys I was just moving around the world with.

So now I want to move some of my characters into position and attack.  So I click on a portrait, and the game recenters the camera on that character, so I have to re-drag the camera back over to the enemies, via cursor # 2.  And I'm going to have to do this all for every single character, after every single attack.

So anyways, I set it all up, and unpause it.  But it doesn't unpause, because spacebar isn't pause like every other realtime+pause RPG since Baldur's Gate, it's another key.  And not even something that makes sense, like for example, the button that puts you into tactical mode.

But whatever.  There's a fight going on, and I press tab to switch targets.  Does it switch targets?  Nope.  I switches which enemy I'm getting a tooltip for.  So now I'm attacking one enemy, but getting targeting details for another.  Which totally makes sense, right?

I'm switching between characters now, slowing working through the fight, and I want to know what one of the tanking abilities does.  So I mouse over it.  What info does the tooltip give?  It doesn't tell me what the ability does, or how much damage it causes, or whether it's an AOE, or anything sensible.  It tells me what the keybinding for it is.  But that's already given right at the corner of the ability slot, always onscreen.  So why on earth is that the only info the tooltip gives?

Ten minutes of camera adjusting and tree branch staring later, the fight ends.  I click on the loot, but my characters don't go get it, I have to manually run over to each piece of loot.  And since the game doesn't enter/exit tactical mode when combat starts/stops, I'm still in tactical mode, and the camera is still stuck in place.  So my characters run off into the distance, while the camera stays stuck next to a tree.

Edit: Oh, and I keep shooting randomly while walking around inbetween fights.  Because in tactical mode, right click is attack, and left click is select, but outside tactical mode, left click is attack and right click activates objects.  And you can't change your mouse button's keybindings to fix any of this.

Edit2: And did I mention that you can't select multiple characters?  No selecting your three ranged/DPS guys or your melee characters and pointing them all towards an enemy, you have to set each one up separately, readjusting the camera every single time.

Edit3: And did I mention that you can't zoom out far enough to see the rifts and close them?  This is a central part of the game, and you can't do it in tactical mode.

well **** this is worrying

I'll second the call for overhauled pc controls. I don't care too much about the UI although it could be better, but managing combat and looting is a pain in the a**.
In this regards, I'd only ask for point and click movement using the pathfinding of the tactical cam, including auto-movement. If there are items you cannot navigate to with the pathfinding implemented, I'll use the current actionmode controls.

Please get to this asap because it ruins an otherwise awesome experience.

Well, in all but ONE video I have seen they were always playing demos on consoles.  That, along with a total lack of answers concerning the role-playing aspects and the rapt attention game appearance receives (here by posters and in promotion by marketing) suggested PC mechanics were not ever a priority. Wasn't this supposed to be an MMO first?

The majority of gameplay we saw was in fact on PC, but with XBOX controller. The UI changes to the console UI when you play with controller.

There is one particular official demo video (too lazy to look for it) in which Mike Laidlaw goes on about himself being a PC gamer and how they are oh so passionate about PC gaming...so much so that they almost completely forgot about KB&M support. I am sure they only slapped together a PC Control system because we kept nagging them to show us the PC UI.

I just have to chime in and agree with the consensus.  The keyboard controls are probably the worst I've ever seen in any game.  Very clunky and awkward.  I really miss being able to click on loot and have my character automatically move to the items. I'm constantly entering tactical mode when I pan out to look around, even though it's not my intention.  And I rather hate the scan function as well.

There are a lot of great things to be said about this game of course... and I'm certainly not going to give up and demand a refund because of it, but it's definitely something that I hope is addressed.

...

also, bioware... someday you'll figure out how to properly do hair.   I hope :)

I'm not going to return the game I'll keep it in my collection for maybe they'll be kind to fix the control scheme later, I'm hoping. I have Parkinson's Disease and it's sometimes difficult to control but strangely I have abit more control with my right hand probably because's it is my dominate hand but it's also my mouse hand.
So I understand a little of what your going through, one of the reasons I can't manipulate gamepads and don't own a console system.

Some of us have repetitive stress injuries from using a computer 16 hours a day for 20 years.

You know, I didn't want to bring this up, because without even leaving the prologue one already gets the sense that this game is at least 50 times better than DA2, but...I must.

Bioware has gotten a reputation for being the gaming world's Social Justice Warriors. They've embraced gay romances, they've given lip service to transgender roles, they've accommodated the female gamer more comprehensively than any gaming company in history etc.

So it's interesting how LITTLE consideration they've given to people who suffer from Parkinson's, or carple tunnel, or any other ailment that reduces hand and finger coordination/movement on a permanent scale. In fact, they've gone out of their way to make their game as inaccessible as possible to these people.

This weekend I plan on sitting down and training my hands to master these controls....by rote if I have to. But right now it looks like it's going to be a lost cause. I have never in my life had so much trouble controlling basic character movement in a video game.

To my mind, it is still console - and especially with what you've just said. A PC may do something better - I am guessing animation - but it is a disingenuous representation to display a console controller with a computer under the hood same as it is to say the game is made for PC but built for a console controller. It's like selling a Volkswagon with a Rolls Royce engine.

This is a console game available on pc.  I am not one to cry but this game is terrible.  The combat is such a let it!  The micro management of combat has been it staple for 20 years. Now this.  Not sure I will even finish it just not fun to play.

I have a problem cycling through characters in the character record. The arrows are too small and too close together that I sometimes accidentally click the wrong arrow.

As a PC user I want to play a PC game with PC optimization. Here I'm talking about Menus/Looting/no point and click/no mouse scrolling..etc.

I bought this game on the PC to play it with the mouse. Why are you trying to force me to use a gamepad and waste my precious time trying to use Console mechanics & controls?

You need to patch this game asap and give us control over simple things like moving, jumping, scrolling, looting, things that should be a given on a PC. I'm tired of the camera angles, tree branches, two separate mouse cursors ..etc. If I wanted to use two different buttons just to control the camera I would have bought this on a Console.

I feel for you.

Finished the Wrath of Heaven quest.... for those of us who played DAO, DA2... these controls are an abomination.

If you want to split hairs, Dragon Age started as a PC franchise, with DAO being a pretty well-built CRPG.

KotOR, Jade Empire and Mass Effect came to us from consoles, and we were okay with that, to some extent - they were built from the ground up to be console games first and were, with varying results (all of which were nevertheless mouse-friendly), ported to PC afterwards.

However, with DA2 and DAI, BioWare has no such excuse - as multiplatform titles, they were supposed to perform well on all listed platforms, and I don't actually recall seeing an X360-compatible gamepad being listed in the minimum hardware requirements list.

Other than the inventory, PC controls for ME1/2 were just fine. The company that ported it did a really good job making combat work with M+K!

If you were around back when DAII was marketed, you should know Laidlaw isn´t the most trustworthy source of information.

The biggest problem I will encounter is because I had a stroke some years back and have VERY LITTLE fine motor control with my left hand.  This means, in all games that I play, I do everything with my mouse and rarely use the W,S,D,A keys.  If I have to use them for movement, my disability may make it impossible for me to play the game which is a pity .. I  was really looking forward to it.  I am sure I'm not the only disabled person who plays Bioware games and we would all appreciate being able to use the mouse for movement.

I'm not going to return the game I'll keep it in my collection for maybe they'll be kind to fix the control scheme later, I'm hoping. I'm not disabled like that, and I feel sorry that this game has just awful controls. I wish you luck when trying to find a solution.

Bioware just f***** up with us. A patch is mandatory to fix this situation. I don't judge who likes to play this kind of game with a controller, but I'm all positive for options. Leave the gameplay choice for the players.

Does anybody from DAI has made any pronouncements?

Received this game just yesterday and couldn't wait to install when I got home from work.

After 30 minutes, I wanted to quit to desktop.

I cannot believe how awful the PC controls were designed. I mean, what kind of leadership does Bioware have on their design teams? This is not simply a matter of programming. Someone actually designed the controls this poorly and for what reason?

It's almost unplayable.

P.S. They also need to add a "walk" toggle on PC. The running is way too fast and clunky and is certainly immersion breaking.

i've given up on m+kb for now, it's so badly impemented i can't believe this is the same group of people that designed the pc controls for DAO and DA2, the perfect setup already existed i have no idea why they decided to screw it up so badly.

Is it possible to change the view perspective when in tactical mode and can you still control your characters with WASD in this mode as well?

No, not really. Mike Laidlaw Tweeted some vague message yesterday suggesting that they're looking into the 'camera centering issue' in tactical view. But that's such a trivial thing compared to the fundamental problems with the PC controls.

Totally agree with all this. PC controls are a mess, and an aftertought because, it was made for consoles. Sigh. Plain and simple.

Want another proof that DAI is a lazy console port?

Consoles are playing on a TV. Only one. But PC gamers are often playing on 2 to 6 monitors array. Yep. 2014. Nvidia Surround and AMD Eyefinity.

Like me. I play on a high-end PC, not a console, with 3X 30'' monitors array. It's ''usually'' alot of fun, but not with a console port made for ''TVs''... since my mouse cursor doesn't lock to my gaming monitor sigh... because there is no option like ''Lock mouse Pointer to gaming Window''... so for  EACH fight, I have to:

1) ''fight'' with the PC controls (subject of this thread) and (imagine) have another layer of difficulty since I also have to

2) fight with my mouse, since if it goes ''out'' of the game screen, and if it goes on one of my 2 side monitors (and it does this in EVERY fight), then the game goes in a small tiny windowed mode! so I must franctically click on my taskbar to bring back the game in fullscreen mode while mobs are hitting my party! :( Sigh. It's crazy! Sometimes it's doing this 5-6 times in a fight!

Please, fix this. :(

I've tried everything. Come on. Marvel Heroes has a ''Lock mouse pointer top game Window''. so it can be done.

I cannot agree more with this post. I'm trying to Play on NIGHTMARE difficulty my first play through, since I had no issues with Dragon Age Origins with those PERFECT PC controls.

BUT this is just ridiculous.

I'm sorry, but

I thought this was advertised as a "pick the way you play" dragon age. To suite both fans of DA:origins, and DA2's combat & control mechanics. I'm seeing very little DA:origins type mechanics and controls unfortunately.

Was a ball dropped somewhere?

I'm begging some Developer(s) please can you just go back and Copy paste the mechanics and controls from the first game into the Options for this one?

Let me:

Point and Click.

Pause Between Each and Every Spell or Ability. (Tactics: This is A MUST. - Not these limited 5 action nonsense mechanics.)

* Oh a deadly boss attack, I can easily Pause. Scroll out (about 5x less draw distance in this game versus Origins might I add). Click on the ally/teammate I need to go to then set them to move out've the way Easily. *Not this Jaggy camera angles jumping around when doing it sort of thing.*

And When I switch to my main character it goes into this "Control Mode". *So any abilities I use, I have to keep playing realtime to initiate?- that sucks... cause it makes one of my guys almost useless to coordinate ability timings with.*

Clean up the UI for PC?

*also... reading things on PC is very bloated. actually hurts my eyes from the excessively large font in some areas that's an obvious attempt to make it easier for console players to read on 1080 40"+ flatscreens :( *

Why won't you let me Assign an ability or action for him to use, without it being interrupted by me being forced to have to Sit on a character? This isn't fun. And it doesn't feel like I'm actually controlling a party. It's more like playing leapfrog between them.

Let me change Tactics "T" to Spacebar "Pause". *why is there no Pause option?  - only when I enter the first part of tactics mode??*

This needs to be addressed. I was under the impression this would suite dragon age origin fans.

*I loved dragon age origins; put more time into that game then almost any. Bioware makes some outstanding games, but... I hate to say it but... this seems pretty sloppy for the PC iteration in comparison to the previous games of the series. :( *

The keyboard+mouse interface feels like it was meant to be a game for an iOS or something. I mean it is touch-oriented in every form of interaction. It's good to have an option like that for people with touch-screens, it really is. But it does not mean you could forgot about the others. This is PC version we are talking about afterall.
