I haven't got my copy yet but I'm not liking where this is heading. I have to say the least I expect is the same freedom of controls and camera that was available in DA:Origins. If people are saying this is awkward and clunky then it makes me very nervous... very nervous indeed.

PC players expect a very organic feel to their game experience and it really is not like console playing. I am always exasperated when people say use a controller instead - that's just asinine! I wouldn't suggest a console player to ditch their controller for a keyboard and mouse. Its just different and people like what they like and a game like DAI for PC needs it - at least as far as PC players are concerned.

Talking of concerned - there have been over 120 replies to this thread already and as far as I can tell there have been no response from BioWare?

We've already witnessed one great debacle with Ubisoft and AC:Unity - Please tell me we're not heading in that direction with this?

I agree that this might be the worst m/kb set up I've ever dealt with.

Maybe it's Bioware's sarcastic response (along with the huge, huge game world) to the complaints from DA2 about combat being too easy and re-used maps. That's the only reason I can think of as to why they would've messed with the PC controls so much.

Maybe, compared to DA:I, DA2 had very good controlls and a good feeling to it. The third person view was well executed to.

Here's how the game just "worked" for me just now:  I'm running around, camera over my shoulder, using WASD to move and pressing space to jump over rocks.  I can't move move with left+right mouse buttons like other RPGs and the previous DA game, but it's at least semi functional.

I see an enemy up ahead.  So I zoom out to enter tactical mode.  Camera pulls straight up into a tree, and I can't see a thing but tree branches.  I readjust the camera so the tree isn't blocking the view, but it still doesn't zoom out far enough to see the enemies, just half my party, cause the other half is too far away, just like the enemies are too far away.

So now, I have a tactical view of tree branches and two of my character's heads.  Which would be great if I had two people in my party.  And we were fighting a tree.  But we're not.

So I pan around.  Not with my mouse cursor, but with the second cursor.  Yes, there's two entirely separate cursors, and the mouse cursor doesn't pan the screen around when you put it at the edge of the screen, only the second cursor moves the screen.  And I have to use the keyboard to control the second cursor, but instead of being moved with the WASD keys, like virtually every game I've ever played (and Dragon Age), it's moved via QWES- totally backwards from the keys I was just moving around the world with.

So now I want to move some of my characters into position and attack.  So I click on a portrait, and the game recenters the camera on that character, so I have to re-drag the camera back over to the enemies, via cursor # 2.  And I'm going to have to do this all for every single character, after every single attack.

So anyways, I set it all up, and unpause it.  But it doesn't unpause, because spacebar isn't pause like every other realtime+pause RPG since Baldur's Gate, it's another key.  And not even something that makes sense, like for example, the button that puts you into tactical mode.

But whatever.  There's a fight going on, and I press tab to switch targets.  Does it switch targets?  Nope.  I switches which enemy I'm getting a tooltip for.  So now I'm attacking one enemy, but getting targeting details for another.  Which totally makes sense, right?

I'm switching between characters now, slowing working through the fight, and I want to know what one of the tanking abilities does.  So I mouse over it.  What info does the tooltip give?  It doesn't tell me what the ability does, or how much damage it causes, or whether it's an AOE, or anything sensible.  It tells me what the keybinding for it is.  But that's already given right at the corner of the ability slot, always onscreen.  So why on earth is that the only info the tooltip gives?

Ten minutes of camera adjusting and tree branch staring later, the fight ends.  I click on the loot, but my characters don't go get it, I have to manually run over to each piece of loot.  And since the game doesn't enter/exit tactical mode when combat starts/stops, I'm still in tactical mode, and the camera is still stuck in place.  So my characters run off into the distance, while the camera stays stuck next to a tree.

Edit: Oh, and I keep shooting randomly while walking around inbetween fights.  Because in tactical mode, right click is attack, and left click is select, but outside tactical mode, left click is attack and right click activates objects.  And you can't change your mouse button's keybindings to fix any of this.

Edit2: And did I mention that you can't select multiple characters?  No selecting your three ranged/DPS guys or your melee characters and pointing them all towards an enemy, you have to set each one up separately, readjusting the camera every single time.

Edit3: And did I mention that you can't zoom out far enough to see the rifts and close them?  This is a central part of the game, and you can't do it in tactical mode.

THAT !

So much THAT !

Give that man a freaking Ferrari and call it a day.

Worst console port to PC from BioWare yet. Almost have a feeling that they gave the job to some 3rd party company .....

Browsing through the online manual here. I can't help but notice that it references controller keys consistently and rarely (and as an apparent afterthought) throws in an occasional mention of the keyboard controls.

Clearly this game was designed around a controller.

Hi!

I agree with all the comments on the atrocious PC controls. For me at least the game is unplayable in its current format.

I have played all the DA games, but the PC controls in this one are by far the worst and most annoying.

The solution isn't "get a controller".

Also how convenient that the refunds have a "within 24hrs of starting the game" clause. I'm sure many will eat the cost of this fiasco before they realize that their window for a refund has closed.

Oh well, back to playing Divinity Original Sin....

As a PC user I want to play a PC game with PC optimization. Here I'm talking about Menus/Looting/no point and click/no mouse scrolling..etc.

I bought this game on the PC to play it with the mouse. Why are you trying to force me to use a gamepad and waste my precious time trying to use Console mechanics & controls?

You need to patch this game asap and give us control over simple things like moving, jumping, scrolling, looting, things that should be a given on a PC. I'm tired of the camera angles, tree branches, two separate mouse cursors ..etc. If I wanted to use two different buttons just to control the camera I would have bought this on a Console.

Here's how the game just "worked" for me just now:  I'm running around, camera over my shoulder, using WASD to move and pressing space to jump over rocks.  I can't move move with left+right mouse buttons like other RPGs and the previous DA game, but it's at least semi functional.

1) I cannot click the ground/items and my character automatically go pick it up
2) Camera does not zoom out enough to be useful in tactical mode
3) Cannot find an option for unlocking camera to selected units when issuing commands (I know it should be there because I watched the KB&M game-play from the devs)
4) Cannot keybind to side mouse buttons.
5) Cannot drag mouse and select characters.

6) No auto-attack, unless in tactical view. (Changing the rules when in 3rd person and tactical, no longer feels like one system, but 2 awkwardly smooshed together.

7) No option to bind camera to mouse movement (w/o holding a button down).

^^ Totally agree.  This is so bad I just stopped playing after a few hours because I was thinking how awful it will be after many hours....

Add in the stupid V sonar thingie and that loot or interact-able objects aren't highlighted...wth.    I made sure to let the gaming community know on some of the larger sites via review.   Sorely disappointed...

Wow..this has made me really upset, until I read about this (and the whole mess with the Inquisitors Edition and it's broken pieces) I was so excited. I have been posting trailers and counting down days on my facebook for MONTHS. Seriously, (like others I'm sure) waiting for this game has been my main "hobby" all year.
Dragon Age Origins is my favorite game and Dragon Age is my favorite franchise and right now...I don't even want to play it.
And why is no one from Bioware commenting on this?
Where the hell are they?

And seriously, I feel lied to! Just a few weeks ago there was a videon on Dragon Ages facebook page "Why you should play Dragon Age Inquisition on PC" telling us how they focus on the PC - REALLY? Bioware? And they talked about it in the live streams, that the controlers where added, that you could choose!

The Controls in Origins where so great, you could have just tweeked them a little bit, like adding a jump button but this? It seems terrible, and to read about so many people deeming the game unplayable. I feel heartbroken, my health is poor so I don't do much. I play games. I've been waiting and longing and now, the night before it's available for me (Gamestop called earlier today, for some reason we get the game on day earlier) I read about this and my stomach actually hurts.

I really hope it's not as bad as people make it sound...but I doubt it. And I guess hoping that the reason no one from Bioware has said anything in the forums is because they are working on fixing the issues is to no avail?

And why change something that was working? Who in their right mind would go "hey you know what, let's change the controls to be more console-like to the PC. Everyone knows that PC gamers buy and build these really expensive gaming computers because they really want a console. This way we'll force them to use a controler and everyone is happy!"

Damn....I thought Bioware was going to redeem themselves...that this would be the game of the year. They had the tools for it.
I'll go to bed now..will be praying for a patch within 19 hours so that I can play it.

Origins >>> Dragon Age 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Inquisition

Going downhill I see, this one ended up being borderline unplayable.

Bioware please I love your games and universe DA:O and even DA2 had fine PC controls please patch this in. I don't even need a date just a confirmation that you've heard the feedback acknowledge it and will work on a patch to fix this. No threats no insults no violence. A simple request of confirmation, Please don't turn on your pc fans or defend the system with PR talk. Just understand that we post here out of love for a franchise. At least I do.

I'm glad you think those two games had fine control.  I can't get through either game because of them.  Which is why I didn't buy the PC version.  I got the Xbox360 version instead.  The graphics on the 360 look horrible.  But I'll take horrible graphics over combat mechanics.

It’s not unplayable for me, after spending some time time at it… the annoyances are serious, and need to be fixed, but I can play it.

On Casual. I won’t try on Normal until this stuff gets fixed.

Browsing through the online manual here.

Thank you. I hadn't been able to find that yet (every time I tried to download it, EA gave me the French one).

It contains almost no information, but they did do a better job of describing what the tone icons mean.

Of course, I've already turned them off.

I said the same thing.  I shudder in anger at DA2. Yet the tactics and the controls were so well done.. Its about one of the few things DA2 got right..  right now, i would rather have that than the mess DAI is with kb+m

...I should be excited as I am getting DA:I tonight (in New Zealand, here)...but all these mouse/keyboard issues have me thinking I won't be playing till the small hours with the game :(

Or I will be, and then coming back here to add more concerns to this post.

With the release of Dragon Age: Inquisition, we've been hearing a number of concerns from members of our PC community, including:

  • Driver support
  • Hitching and frame rate issues in cutscenes
  • Feedback on keyboard and mouse controls
  • General user interface optimizations for PC

We've been following these issues closely and are looking into them.

Player experience is a top priority for us. Our goal is to address as many of these as possible in our upcoming patches, including some in our next patch, which is under way. We’ll release further details in the coming days and will continue to monitor your concerns.

Your feedback is important to us, and we appreciate your contribution to making Dragon Age: Inquisition a better overall experience.

Just saw this posting in another topic...

Thanks for this, its great to see a response at least and on the face of it I'm encouraged. Its a bit of a shame that BioWare didn't post specifically in this thread but I'm still happier than I was a few hours ago.  :P

Yeah, wer're all busy people!

So I tweeted Mike Laidlaw about the issues for the PC controls (see below reply)...

Me: Hi Mike, can we expect a patch regarding the PC controls? Lot of people (myself inc.) are having issues with them. (See Forum)

ML: We will be addressing some issues reported. Details from the community group when ready.

Hope this helps you guys.

Prior to this game, i've mostly played MMOs.  But MMOs are games that have universal mouse control conventions used by a very large playerbase.  It's really hard to get used to the bizarre (and unchangeable) mouse controls in DA:I, which directly affects my enjoyment of the game - I don't want to fight the UI in order to properly fight the enemies.

Simply put, I really need to configure my Mouse to do:

Right Mouse Button = Turn

Left Mouse Button = Look

Both Mouse Button = Move Forward

Center Mouse Button/Wheel Down = Something (currently not bindable)

This is just the bare standard and doesn't count the many popular alternate setups.  Without it, Melee becomes barely playable and I am forced to sit back with the Ranged toons.

Very frustrated.  Fan boy here and was sure I was doing something wrong.  Surely there's a way to fix this.  Unfortunately I found this thread and realize my experience is the same as everyone else.

Does this sound familiar? As soon as I start the game I try to pick up loot. Left click, right click, interactive with, nothing works.  Pause game, check key bindings. I don't get it.  Restart game.  How the heck do you pick up stuff.  Eventually realize you have to be standing on top of loot, to get it. Now I have to navigate using this terrible UI to stand on loot, to interact with loot. This is nuts.

Next issue...walking around shooting arrows at everything.  I keep clicking to move, then shoot.  Forget it, I restart as dual rogue.  Now I have a new issue.  As I'm clicking, clicking, clicking, clicking to attack, I notice I'm just stabbing the air.  Wait...what?  I have to pause the game just to figure out how to navigate my rogue back to the bad guy?  What if they keep moving?  Now im spending all my time navigating with terrible UI, just to finish attacking.  This is worse then the loot situation.

Just venting.  thanks for listening
