In every BioWare game, there is that one line of dialogue, or that one event that takes place that just makes you scratch your head. What was BioWare thinking? Who thought putting that in the game was a good idea? Was I supposed to take that cinematic seriously?

For me personally, the one awkward moment that stands out to me the most is Steve Cortez's crash on Earth at the end of ME3. I did not pursue a romance with him, as I was engaged in a complicated relationship between Miranda and Ashley. I certainly talked to him just for the heck of it and found some of his conversations to be interesting. What I did not expect was for when the kodiak crashed, Shepard would scream "STEVE!!!!!" at the top of his lungs. Took me completely off guard and I wasn't quite sure why Mark Meer had such a strong reaction, when his reactions towards Thane, Mordin, or Legion dying were much more subtle.

What was your one awkward moment from Mass Effect?

Honestly, to this day, the first thing that popped into my head, without even reading your post, was:

STEEEEEEEEEEEEEVE!!!!!!!!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

Another Mass Effect moment I found to be really awkward was in the first game near the end when the Normandy is impounded by the Council. There is a cut scene where Shepard and his/her potential love interested walks in on him/her standing next to the lockers on the crew deck level. Shepard has a really ridiculous expression on his/her face (mixture of constipation and confusion?) as he/she awkwardly stumbles to the ground. The animations in ME1 were pretty interesting...

Start at 3:16.

Agreed.  That scene was not well-written... or necessary.

2 "scenes" I  would add are from Mass Effect 2:

  1. Kelly's response to Shepard telling her they'll win.  They just met!!! Why does Kelly trust Shepard implicitly already?
  2. Giving smuggling evidence to Anaya after Samara's oath to Shepard.  Samara just basically swore to do Shepard's bidding, Anaya says the evidence would be inadmissable, Samara vouches for Shepard's evidence.  Anaya, who clearly witnessed Samara's oath accepts this.  WHY?!?!? Samara is no longer a neutral party.

Yeah... Sometimes the dialogue just doesn't match up that well. Makes you wonder if BioWare actually listened to it again and questioned whether it made sense.

We also can't forget about Anderson's unforgettable running scene at the beginning of ME3...

For me, it was in my last game when shep turned to Tali and said, "I know I encouraged your people to go to war with the geth and take back your homeworld, and I know you loved me after I got you exonerated of those ridiculous charges that day your father died, and then I dumped you and went back to my old girlfriend, and I know we've been through a hell of a lot together since we met in that alley outside Chora's Den, but I'm gonna have to go ahead and let the geth kill all your people now. They deserve a chance to live and you don't. I'm sorry."

Awkward.

Honorable mention to the day Wrex held a claymore to shep's face and played back a recording of the salarian dalatrass offering him a deal to sabotage the genophage cure.

My awkward moment was due to playing up to ME2 before I knew about the existence of romances. I was talking to tali constantly at the end of ME2 to learn about the quarians etc. and then she started making a pass at me! I tell you, Its a great plot mechanic, but it seems damn weird when your not aware of it an its one of the first proper RPGS you've played! She's such a likeable character, I had to say 'yes' so everything worked out OK :)

I'm such a wimp, I can't bear to make any other choice but Geth/Quarian peace. Just my luck that my two favourite races are fighting each other! Actually I always play full paragon and quite frankly, if the Happy Ending mod was a canon ending choice, I'd probably choose that.

Most of the time I make peace between them, too. I've chosen the quarians over the geth once (maybe twice) before, but only with Not-Legion. I didn't like him, and that made it easier.

I didn't know what to do at first. In ME3 Rannoch mission, I chose 'don't upload the code' as I thought uploading the code would cause the quarians to be killed, but then Legion made his 'this is not justice speech' and I literally sat there for 5 minutes wondering who to save. Then I noticed the lovely blue (some would say 'cop-out', but not suckers for happy endings*, like me) in the corner of the dialogue wheel and then everything worked out fine. Until the pointless (IMO) 'bittersweet' twist in the destroy ending, that is.

*In stuff with good plots and characters I actually care about. that is.

I just figured, "In Shepard we trust" and I knew things would work out.

"See this devastation, Primarch?" - camera shows Menae, "Double that for Earth."

What?

About STEEEVE! dialogue, it's actually an oversight. Meer said that he recorded multiple lines for that scene and only the romance one ended up in the game

There were quite a few 'awkward' moments in ME. However, I think the most awkward moments for me was when Shepard met the Council in person in ME1. First there was the fact that Anderson wanted to use Shepard's "Visions" as evidence, then the subsequent meeting when Shepard was going on about the Reapers. Sure, it turned out to be true, but....really? Shepard had to go with the "I have SEEN THEM!" route? He almost put Manual to shame. Then of course, there's the final meeting with the Council after they decided to shore up the Citadel's defenses. Shepard insisted on coming across as a raving lunatic when he tried to persuade the Council that Saren was going to bring back the Reapers. Again, he was right, but all I kept thinking was "Yes Shepard, please, give them an excuse to keep you and your ship grounded." (and of course, that is actually what happened) The best course of action there was to just keep his mouth shut and then pursue Saren after the meeting without the Council's knowledge and or approval.

For me the most awkward moment was the following:

First playthrough of ME3, LI was Liara. The situation was happening on the citadel quite late in the game.

Liara and FemShep are talking about their history and Liara asks if the relationship is still ongoing. FemShep says "Yes". So there is a cutscene... music starts getting louder... the two women slowly turn their heads towards each other... close their eyes... lips are touching.....

And then, right at the kiss there is a ka-ching popup that i got the armorous achievement (cant remember what its called). Mood is completely gone.

But not just for me... Liara and Shep are back at their normal dialog mode and whenever i click Liara she just says "Hello Shepard" in a completely absent minded neutral way... i mean just seconds ago they were kissing and now... nothing.

I literally just blinked at the screen disbelieving that this is what a game tries to sell me as "romance".

I was under the impression that was the issue. Given proper context, it would have made sense for Shepard to scream if he had been in a relationship with Steve. It's still funny to watch though as he goes from screaming "STEVE!!????!!!!!!???!!!" to a calm tone of "You sure?" I figured there was some sort of coding error or BioWare found it humorous.

Yeah. I understand that BioWare was trying to say that Shepard was the outspoken hero who would do whatever it takes to do the right thing. It just came across as overdone and shallow because Shepard rarely had proof and he was just ranting like a madman every encounter. If I was on the Council, I would have believed Saren over Shepard as well given his conduct.

Remember its a video game. If a film shows 'passionate romance' it can be a masterpiece of storytelling, if a video  game showed it, it would be 'turning the world's children (sensationalist newspapers have never seemed to know anything about age ratings or demographics)  into vile rapists and sex maniacs' or something.

I'm certain that this is the explanation for the 'coyness' of Bioware's 'sex' scenes. I'm not saying they should make them gratuitous, but, yeah, they could be a bit more meaningful.

Sexuality and romance is a sensitive topic in North America. BioWare has been fairly successful dancing carefully on the issue, but they certainly have improved with their execution over time. It's a learning process, but certainly many awkward moments have come from the romances.

I don't remember the line exactly, when talking to the rachni queen in ME1, my Shepard made this derpy-ass face.  I don't know if it's the eyes I chose, or what, but he looks really stupid.

Also, even funnier than Shepard's "STEEV!!" if Steve lives is Ashley's "Eyrarghhurhugh!" if Steve dies. The way the squad is just standing in their normal static pose whilst she's verbally seizing makes it.
