Is it just me or is it actually impossible to have dark brown eyes in this game?

None of the presets match and using the "choose inner/outside iris colour" doesn't work since when I click on the shade I want there is either no change or a random colour pops up (usually one from the opposite side of the square).

You should be able to select a dark brown using the Inner/Outer selection method. I assume you are playing on PC which can be hard to select two of the same colour but it should be possible, I have made characters with Pink eyes where both colours blend to make one colour.

Like I said, the problem with that is that they are simply not selectable. The darker tones on the bottom of the square simply make no change to the colour or they inexplicably turn white/yellow/whatever is on the top side of the square. Might be a bug or something.

That sounds like a bug.  I did notice that sometimes happens (especially with eye-shadow).  Whenever it happens, I bring the selector into the middle of the palette, let it set for a second, and then drag it down, manually into the dark areas.  I have made dark brown eye-shadow, so I assume it's possible with eyes.

I can never seem to get black, especially with the make-up section. I drag it down to the black area, but it always ends up being some shade of blue for some reason.

No, it's not just you. I have this problem too. Either the eye becomes more yellow or red looking but it's difficult for me to get brown, let alone dark brown. I sort of got a lighter color brown but even then it's a bit more on the red side. After a while I got tired of fidgeting with the adjustments.

It's just incredibly finicky. The darker colours aren't where you expect them to be. I end up having to grid scroll until I get a good colour, and it's usually at the very, very edge of the colour box.
