I've gathered that there are bugs and technical issues but what about the actual meat of the game? How is the story? Are the characters interesting? Is the dialogue well written? How does it compare to DA:O and DA2? Things like that. I'm eager to know what people think, even if you haven't finished the game.
So is a general consensus starting to form yet?

The Geth platforms are still...considering...
Check your local store in six months. If the game is discounted by around 25% or more, it was bad. If it's still full price, it was good.
Aliens: Colonial Marines stews in the $5 bargain bin and cries for what might have been.

I find that people who expected this to Be DA:O2 don't like the game. People who expected the game to be DA2 part 2 also hate the game. Its seems the people who knew the game was going to be its own version of Dragon age like the game alot.
So I'll let you make of that what you will.

If you always wanted to play a Dragon Age mmo offline, you should like this game a lot.
If you wanted to play DA:O or DA2 you might be disappointed.

i think it is different:
I knew what it would be, but i hoped they could form a interesting open world with maybe fewer quests than for example Skyrim but more interesting ones. But this plays, offside the average main plot (really a bad story for Bioware), like a ubisoft game (collecting flags on the map and activating "camps").
I also hoped for a little more depth in fights (than DA2) and at least a good tactical cam but with 8 skills and not even able to switch weapons this feels shallow.
It is basically all i feared when i heard "open world"

I honestly like the game a lot. My main gripes with DA2 were how limited the locations were and the story. Both have been vastly improved in this version. To me DA: I feels like a blend of my favorite elements of DA: O (characters and story), with the great elements of games like Skyrim (huge interesting worlds), Witcher 2 and even elements of Far Cry 3 (like the stronghold gameplay). All in all, I really like it. And in a year where most video games have been massive disappointments, this is easily one of my contenders for GOTY (unless Smash beats it).

Agreed
Im a 3d type I expect it to be a union of the first two.. with many of Origins Strenghts(Tac Cam,Equipemnt,"Bigger" Story) and with some of DA2s weaknesses fixed... and so far it seems to be exactly that...
as you said.. it isnt DA:O2 but it isnt DA3 and its certianly not Baldurs Gate 3... thats what some of the most disapointed fellas seem to think

So just because the side quests arent anything new and revolutionary its an offline MMO?
Its been "Get 10 of " "Kill 5 of" "Search for..." "Speak to" in every RPG i can remember when it comes to sidequests
i dont get the Problem here....

I'm always suspicious of people who say "honestly" around the beginning of a sentence. It usually means "what I'm saying is something I don't actually believe, but for the moment I've convinced myself of it so I don't curl up into a ball and cry about how badly I was fooled".

Believe what you want. I am having fun, you have your right to not believe me. But seeing how I started following this game about a week a goe, I wasn't in the "THE HYPE IS REAL OMG GREATEST GAME EVAR!!" train, ergo my expectations were low. Even if the game had turned out to be a turd I wouldn't be that disappointed. Now DA 2 was another story. That game is partially one of the reasons why my expectations were so low to begin with.

No, there is no consensus yet. There likely will never be a consensus, considering that there are still vociferious flame wars over DAO and DA2 this many years later.
This game does a lot of things much better than DAO or DA2. It does a few things worse.

I don't think there can be a consensus in one day. I'm of mixed opinions myself but I'm no where near finished with the game either.
I haven't requested a refund...which means I feel the game probably has good chances of having many worthwhile qualities.
But I am finding things about it that do make me wish I'd waited to buy til after the first post release patch...but...I really lack self discipline when it comes to BioWare products...regardless of the scar tissue from previous burns.

DAI is in the middle. It can't surpass Origins, (nothing ever will from BioWare) but it does conquer DA2 single-handedly. If you enjoyed DA2, you'll find yourself right at home with DAI. If you hated DA2, you'll find DAI to be at the very least a tolerable, with a hint of fun, experience.

I haven't lost interest in it after one day of playing despite the repeated crashing thanks to the DirectX issue which is frustrating. I haven't had any problem adjusting to the WASD movement, and while there are still some things I do repeatedly (like try to shoot things I'm trying to loot), I'm not shooting myself in the foot because the controls are impossible.
Could it be better? Yeah, and I think they should let people customize their keyboard/mouse more. That is what most PC players expect to be able to do with their computers and why they bother with them - being able to do it our way instead of being locked into a console which is static and never changes.

I think the most damning thing is that there isn't a huge number of people on these forums praising the game like crazed fanatics. Even positive comments are of the form "huh...well, it's alright, but it has some issues. Okay, I guess...7/10?"
There's no drama hurricane this time, like with the ME3 ending or ME3 character import/appearance debacle, but the issues with PC controls and general bugs are taking their toll.
As someone who was (despite my Leliana hatred to the contrary) initially intending to pick this up on Friday in the UK, all the forums have been doing is convincing me not to waste my money.

No doubt a good game, but mere fantasy. Cant touch the epicness of Mass Effect universe - Biowares best creation.

The good thing is that this time around, the problems some people have will be fixed in due time, compared to the disasters of the past two entries. It's easy to fix a few bugs, keyboard issues and whatnot, but fix the whole damned ending? Make a boring game fun (DA2)? So those skeptical about getting it can wait until a price cut and will probably have a pretty decent experience.
