So far, the game is meh.
I will say one thing. If you are a completionist, this game is your worst nightmare.
Let's take Skyrim, for example. Its open world is chock-full of things to do--even going from Town A to town B offers tons and tons of optional content for you to do, but at the same time, it never feels like you're forced to do it.
In DAI, I'm starting to feel as though the massive open areas are just working against it. Yeah, they're great and all, but they're mostly empty, filled with respawning enemies, and there's little variety within the areas themselves (if you're in a snowy area, all you'll see is snow, if you're in a temperate area, etc.).
I also feel that experience gain is just way, way slower than it should be. This is probably a result of having minimal skills on the bar--in fact, most skill trees only offer four active skills each, meaning you have to fill up two trees to get a full bar's worth of skills. Which won't happen until level 15-ish, assuming free skill points occur as in previous DA games.
Regardless of its design, though, I do feel like leveling is really slow so far. Most RPGs have a bell curve for leveling--you get your first few levels really fast to give you some options, then the game slows down considerably in the mid-game. My XP rate slowed down at level 4. So now that I'm exploring the Hinterlands, with tons of mobs and long runs between content, I'm getting a bit tired of doing the same thing over and over and over with no variation.
I also really dislike the 8 skills max route they've taken. I know they did it to please the console players, but it's really hurt the gameplay. Most of the passive skills fall somewhere between uninspiring and boring, and there's very little synergy now, even compared to DAO.
Meh, maybe it'll get better. The main story so far isn't the most gripping thing in the world. Maybe I'll just avoid most of the sidequests since they are just so incredibly boring at this point.
