Hi,

TL:DR Countless restarts, needs help with some character design or tips

I've been playing the game for 2 days and have probably re-rolled about 12 times. Each time I make new character I find something wrong with it.

First I tried with a Female Human - I've spent countless hours trying to design a nice looking one and I just don't think it is possible, I find the Female Human textures are just bad the complexions and skin tones are so few and not very nice so any else share this opinion? In comparison too

Female Elf - The elf just look heaps better the skin tones are fairer and a lot more (in my opinion at least) aesthetically pleasing again I spent countless hours in the editor trying to make a nice design and I finally settled on one that I liked clicked play and realised that had made one tiny mistake (GAME OVER MAN). I had been browsing through some of the designs on this forum and was pleased with many many of the designs it brought me to thought why didn't have the Code system that Mass Effect had, was a good idea.

I took a brief look at the Qunari and from the offset I decided I didn't like them, which is shame because there back story seems interesting.

I also had an issue where it seemed I had overworked the sliders on the cheek bones and jaw lines etc and after entering the game it even appeared that my mouth was so far forward that I looked a bit like an orangutan. I often feel that the lighting in the Character Creator is extremely dark and when entering the main game how different your character actually looks. I do enjoy the creation of character but I think the amount of time I waste skipping through menus is just SOO excessive.

Thanks

I am struggling to make an attractive human female. She looks OK until the game starts and then euwww somehow she looks terrible. Perhaps it is the lighting as well as the expressions she makes.

I wish this cc was similar to Dragons Dogma. It was so easy to make attractive characters. I loved the variety of hair styles and the fact that the hair (including long styles) looked somehat natural not plastic like in DA:I.

It's pretty dissapointing. I've tried to make decent looking face for a while now and I have no clue how to reach that end. At the same time apparently whoever made the presets was quite baffled as well.

Nah creating attractive characters is doable. There isn't a great variety of hairstyles and I had to increase the gamma until I was done with the cc, but the textures and hair meshes aren't that bad if set on high.

I literally just made and Female elf that I finally liked. Got out of the prologue and realised that I has over stretched part of the chin, now in most lights it looks like she has a huge hole in her chin. This is driving me mad, some Far Cry 4 for a while I think, I literally can't start this game. No way I am playing 100+ hours with a hole in my chin.

The lighting plays a loooooot of tricks on you. I was the same where I had to restart several times until I just said eff this and rolled with it. My inquisitor looks decent enough although in certain angles he looks a tad wonky.

I think I might have to do the same and suck it up! I just wanna play! I also hate that you have to quit our select all the role cards again and then watch the scene it's a nightmare. Here's hoping to the Code System or the Mirror from DA 2.

I know what you mean. I've restarted at least 15+ times so far. But this time, I decided to just go ahead with it.

After getting home from the midnight release, I played through to Haven before falling asleep, but when I got up again yesterday morning, I just wasn't quite satisfied with my hornless female Qunari.  I scrapped her and went back in from the start and did Preset 5 but with horns (and a fair bit of other tweaking.  The end result was satisfactory for me to play through.  I haven't exported the screen shot from ps4 yet, but once I do I'll put it up in the Post Your Inquisitor thread.

Now I feel happy I got a usable character with just one restart.  Not looking forward to my first Manquisitor - my guys always look like dorks, but I've become pretty skilled at making girls I can look at.

I made two attempts before getting my dwarf right.

I like her, but now I have the urge to make another one. Too see how my elf rogue or my qunari mage will look like

*runs off to start Inquisition*

I'm so happy they give use unique eye colors- I love my red eyedwarf

I don't know what you guys are talking about.  Female dwarf preset 3 -> remove makeup -> done.

I lucked up and made a lovely elf right on the first try, BUT I had read to tone down the makeup and I saw what some of the hairstyles had looked like ingame, so I was really careful.  Even during the game, the lighting varies from place to place, so sometimes she's too pale and other times she's fine.

I keep a notebook of CC choices and mark which looks good in game and what needs to be altered.

So it'll read something like Eyes - style second option from left, blue fourth option from left, centre top of grid.

Also, the wonkier your character turns out in CC, the better she ends up looking in game, so don't try for CC perfection just choose elements you like.

I tossed 6 Trevelyans on the rubbish heap, you'll get there. :)

Sometimes my Eavan looks bloody jaundice because of the lighting.

How to get rid of the shiney on the faces in games and is there a way to change the body shape? My Qunari female looks like a man monkey with breasts.  They walk funny as well.

The shine can be fixed in your settings. Change mesh to medium/high/ultra, whichever your system can handle best.

There is no way to change walk or body shape. And actually I think the qunari are quite lovely.

So nice to know I am not alone in my madness! :) You make a character, you like it. then you get in to the real game world and want to kill that abomination, asking yourself how could you find THAT appropriate at cc screen...

It's something I think they can add. I mean my char looks amazing in dark light but as soon as the sun comes up I look like I've been up all night drinking.

The hairstyles/bears and mismatched eyebrows are practically ruining my experience. I can't get a character I'm confident I like and by the time I get to the hinterlands, I'm just not sure I want to invest. I'm... well I'm more than baffled. I nailed a warden and Hawke on first try. The facial structure of my characters isn't an issue. Its the very ugly, archaic hair/beard/eyebrow s* that's just messing everything up.

You, my friend, have CC-OCD. I used to have it where even the tiniest imperfection that I might notice on a character 36 hours into a game would cause me to restart. It's very annoying. You have to FORCE yourself to continue playing otherwise you'll wind up in an endless cycle of repeats.

DA:I's character creator is pretty complex because there are no sliders. I love it because of that, but I can understand why people who don't spend making 100+ faces as a hobby can get tired of it and are unsatisfied with their Quizzies.

I think you need a lot of patience and also a lot experiences on previous character creators to make a good and proportioned face within a few hours. Enhanced Character Edit, a Skyrim mod, can be much more complex than DA:I's, though its still slider based, so there is a bit more 'control'.

As for beginner tips:

  • get a lot of ref photos. Face claims are good but do not try to be super super 100% accurate. It's good to be 90% accurate, but if you concetrate too hard on accuracy, it will make your character look worse if you're changing the proportions every ten seconds.
  • Also you may want to look up an anatomy book or google up the standard proportions of a human face. You can bend the rules of it, but follow it as a basic guideline.
  • And don't usually exaggerate your face features too much (like making your jaw line really really sharp and skinny or having huge eyes). It makes your character look real cartoonish if you're trying to aim for realism.
  • MAKE SURE TO SCREENSHOT YOUR INQUISITOR BEFORE STARTING THE GAME! I will not stress how life will be easier when you decide to make another reattempt but don't want to start from the ground up.

Though I can understand your woes. There should have been multiple lightings and the ability to rotate your character in any angle.
