Hi all,
I'm getting a bit frustrated that every zone I go to seems to inevitably get to the point where I hit mobs that are 5-6 levels higher than me so I have can't move on or complete certain quests, etc.
I'm no stranger to the rpg, so I'm cool with the non-scaling enemies, but I'm wondering if there's some way of the zones having level recommendations so I don't keep running into this. There's the rift in the Hinterlands by the farms that has level 12 mobs, and then I just went to the Oasis and started a quest and had to move through 6-9 level 12 spiders.
I'm taking my time and doing quests, although I'm really not into the open world collect-a-thon stuff that Bioware has unfortunately thrown in. I don't seem to level up through quests though, I just gain Power and Influence.
So, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips, or suggestions, or perhaps this game is just designed so you are supposed to "zone hop" until you can complete everything. If that's the case it's a radial departure for BioWare and I'm certainly not happy about it, but I love me some Dragon Age, so I'm gonna finish this one. Any tips/comments are helpful. Thanks all!
Underleveled everywhere I go...

Well are you doing side quests?
When I hit level 6 I went to Orlais and then did quests from there and then came back to the Hinterlands.
Can't really go into detail without spoilers.
I recommend going to Haven and calling your war council. That should help you out if you have not already done that.

Did you go to the Storm Coast? Mobs there start out at level 4-5, but yes zone hopping seems to be the easiest way to go about leveling.

Is anyone else just really disappointed reading this? Since when does dragon age have zone hopping? and levelled "mobs"? i really really hope quests have some substance to them, im ocd about doing everything dont do this to me bioware. No seriously, it isnt a single player mmo is it?

You better make sure you're sitting down before you start this game for the first time...

I don't see the problem. Take a crack at it and if you're looking to be on the losing side of things, run for it! And steer clear until you are stronger.
I actually love this. Way better than scaling enemies.

I also prefer this to "scaling" enemies. I miss gothic and older games where if you go off the beaten path or try to progress to quickly you find some high level monster there to insta kill you..
It makes it that much sweeter when you can go back and beat them..

If only it were easy to run away in DAI.
Because in combat everything seems to slow down, not like my framerate drops or anything, but the characters move ridiculously slow and half my party ends up dying because they aren't running alongside with me.

It's a bit tricky. Hinterlands ranges from level 3 to level 12. The shoreline map ranges from 4 to 12+. So it isn't a linear - finish zone a move to b type of thing. You hop around from zone to zone and then back again.

It plays much like a single player mmo. Anybody who has played an mmo before will see the similarities. I'm guessing this was the prototype and the next Dragon Age released will be Dragon Age Online.

Kinda funny, since every single MMO I've ever played has had tiered zones. in WoW you went Barrens to Ashenvale to Crag thing, but you never went back. Each zone was finished a few levels in, where as in DAI you go Hinterlands, Shore area, back to Hinterlands, Fallowmire, Hinterlands, Shore Area. But if you want to pretend it matches up for your conspiracy theories ![]()

I'm also on HInterlands and it's been a mess for me. Everyone seems to be lvl 8 and kicking my lvl 4 ass.

I actually figured something out. Well not only does DAI, basically give you a warning of who is going to kill you, look carefully they have red skulls on them.
But, I learned combat goes way way way smoother in tactical camera. Go figure.

No offense, but you said "every single MMO I've ever played" and only mentioned WoW. I played a handful of larger MMO's (UO, EQ, DAoC) that all had zones with mixed mob levels.
If you still think it's unfounded, here's an easy to read EQ chart: http://everquest.all.../zlvlchart.html
Most of the early (level 1-10) zones have mobs up to level 35, and oftentimes these had you crawling on the walls desperately trying to avoid them while picking off the meager drippings that you could take down at your level.

Every time I see enemy, I go directly to tactical cam to see their level. If they are higher than me, I disengage from the fight and run out of that area, if they are below or even to my level, I attack. My advice, use caution my friend.

When my two warriors go down, I sacrifice my rogue so my mage can get away. Hasn't failed the three times I needed to retreat.
Tbh, even though I use tactical cam 100% for all fights, I've never really taken note of enemy levels. I always attack and only retreat if I'm getting my ass handed to me.

I would have prefered the game level with me or that each zone would have a certain level range and progress as I move forward in the story (i.e. Hinterlands level 1-5, Storm Coast level 5-10 and so on and so forth). I can work with this though so I don't have a huge problem with it.
There is a problem with disengaging from combat, though. My level 4 party was chased across the Hinterland by a level 8 bear (from the farms where you get your horse to the gates of Redcliff Village).

I haven't been able to play DAI yet, but this reminds me of playing (and watching playthroughs of) Dark Souls, and getting slaughtered by skeletons early game in misguided attempts to enter the graveyard/catacombs.
