Anyone else think there were some questionable design choices in this game?

-Personally, I hate the UI on console (heard it's worse on PC but IDK how much worse).

-The minimap is terrible. Unless I'm missing something, it's just icons on a blank background. No trails or anything. Trying to find quest objectives with it is a clusterfuck.

-The fact that I can't use the dpad in the menus is super annoying.

-I don't know what they were thinking with the ping loot finder, but it is super annoying.

-No auto attack? Hold Right trigger to attack? Might work in some games, not Dragon Age though.

Besides those reasons, I'm liking the game so far. Just seems that there's some really questionable design choices here. Posted this elsewhere, but too lazy to make it look like I didn't copy paste it.

There are a fricking lot of questionable design choices. But I'll talk about that later.

I've played a couple of hours from EA Access (Oppressed EU console peasant here).

-You're right with the mini-map, I don't see what purpose it serves other than locating enemies.

-I always wondered what that ping thing was for, thanks for the heads up :)

-I was mashing my trigger to attack for an hour before I realised you could just hold it down

I haven't got the game yet, so take this as a YMMV response, but;

Mini Map - there aren't supposed to be trails like in Origins or 2, due to the semi-open world nature of the games regions.  They wanted exploration to be a thing, and having trails probably curtails their ability to promote that quite significantly.

Ping loot Finder - is it like Geralts medallion thing in the Witcher?  They did say they were checking out lots of other RPGs during DA:I's development, maybe that's something that made it in as part of that process.

No Auto-Attack - now...I am extremely - and unreservedly/unashamedly - anti-MP so a mountain of salt is needed with this, but...because MP would be my guess.  They used MP to develop combat systems and it seems likely in an effort to make the MP experience of combat as close as possible to the SP experience of combat (pause excepted, of course) that auto-attack was removed because of that.

Again - I have not yet got the game, but have been following development closely since they announced it.  Others will likely have different opinions but there are mine.

To be fair, it does say that right in the tutorial.

The only questionable design choices I find is the camera centering on characters when you switch between them in tactical cam (apparently this is a bug that'll be fixed) and having to hold down RT to advance time, also in tactical mode (why can't it be tap to activate, tap again to pause?).  I'm playing on PC though, so I suppose I'll have different problems.

I'd still like to see the road and see where the road connects too. So I am not running around in god damn circles trying to find my way out because I can't backtrack anywhere.

I have to pause, Quest map, just to see where I am located.

A mini map with trails and path doesn't stop the game from being an open world, it just helps the player know where they are going.

Look at the mini map of Dragon's Dogma and it's a somewhat open worldish type of game, not as open as some games, but open enough:

Yeah, fair enough. I had enormous problems with the Witcher 2 initially before I figured out how to use that map properly. Hope it gets better for you.

-Personally, I hate the UI on console (heard it's worse on PC but IDK how much worse).

The UI is a little clunky, most especially equipping items. But for the most part, besides the minimap, its passable.

-The minimap is terrible. Unless I'm missing something, it's just icons on a blank background. No trails or anything. Trying to find quest objectives with it is a clusterfuck.

I'm agree entirely.

-The fact that I can't use the dpad in the menus is super annoying.

Again, I agree entirely.

-I don't know what they were thinking with the ping loot finder, but it is super annoying.

The concept is fine, even required, TBH. The execution is not, however. The loot for generic collectibles and drops should be highlighted longer and appeared on the minimap while highlighted.

-No auto attack? Hold Right trigger to attack? Might work in some games, not Dragon Age though.

While I'd have preferred just pressing the button to toggle auto attack, I have not particular problem with this one.

My biggest complaint is how they redesigned Dual Dagger Rogue, it doesn't play anything like Origins. Archery Rogue is the way to go for that. Calm, rhythmic and calculated play yields extremely tangible and apparent results.

The above was the case for EVERY class in DA:O. You also had to know what your allies were doing in at least moderate detail even on normal so you could react accordingly. in DA:I even in hard, it's a rare occasion that I have to control an ally.

DW rogue is just a desperate scramble to try and flank so you don't draw aggro while hoping one of your allies doesn't punt your target halfway across the zone before you get a few swings in.

The combat system should have been slow and gritty like DA:O not this.. "PewpewpewSendEveryEnemyFlying" crap.

What used to be a realistic and full featured Shield bash is now a 20 meter Charge that can Bulldoze through an entire enemy line and then through the mountain behind them complete with waves of what seems to be sonic energy pouring off the warrior in question..

BioWare needs to stop trying to reinvent IP as Mass Effect with swords and just let it be Dragon Age.

While I certainly have complaints, don't let that make you think I hate the game. It's fun and I've enjoyed a lot of it so far. The Multiplayer is fun and the crafting/upgrade system is top notch.

Thus far, the game is sitting at a solid 7/10 for me.. It's no DA:O, that's for certain, but at least it isn't DA2.
