What happened to the Companion Tactics?

One of the most fun parts of Dragon Age series to me is setting up good tactics to have your party members fight exactly how you want them to. It may have taken a bit to set up, but once you finished and got to watch them follow your instructions perfectly, it gives you a certain sense of satisfaction. Or at least it did for me.

Now...I don't know what this mess of a tactics screen is...There's no conditions to set or actions to go with those conditions. No way to set specific targets, etc..I gotta say...I hate it. This particular issue is a really big letdown for me. I'm still holding my judgement on the game as a whole, but I'm really disappointed in this massive simplification of the companion tactics.

one word: consolefied.

It's dumb downed for the average 14 year old. I hate console ports.

It's kind of impressive they managed to dumb DA down further from the hack'n'slash of DA2. But I'll be damned if they didn't managed to do exactly that for DAI. No tatics, no unique companion skill trees (at least thus far for me), all ON TOP of the goofy hack'n'slash from DA2. The Tactical cam is so bad, I almost miss DA2's attitude of just being honest about what it was doing and leaving it out entirely. No stat points to min/max, as that got dumbed down as well to being completely automated. And all this topped off with a crappy PC port, and shitty consolefied UI. Halle-fuckin'lujah...

Is that what happened? Because I play on consoles and I was baffled by the change too.

Agree, the lack of the extensive tactics system is a severe let down and also screws up your chance to set up some combos since party members are casting things willy nilly. /sigh

My complaint is that I can't even have party members attack people other than who I am attacking, if I set it to protect me instead of follow me, they just stand there and don't fight at all. If I do the pause tell them what to do, they will ignore those orders and attack who I am attacking as soon as I attack. I have a duel wielding rogue and a two handed warrior in my group, they don't even use abilities. even when i set them to preferred. So to sum it up, I have to auto attack mobs one at a time as an entire group. I would prefer complete chaos and no tactics over this very follow the leader no tactics.

Does anyone else have this problem

My super main gripe is to be able to set a enemy target for my party members, so that I can go kill adds, while the rest of the group attacks the boss, instead of them just attacking what I am attacking......sigh

I was having the same problem of my companions simply not using ANY abilities at all...ever. They would ONLY use them when I paused and switched to them and manually made them use an ability. I fixed it by simply closing out the game and logging back in to Origin. Seemed to only start happening after I tried to fiddle with the "tactics", though I am loathe to even call them that. But it seems the terrible "tactics" aren't able to update, sometimes, until the game has been closed and restarted. At least it did for me.

Given that the first two DA games were available on consoles and had a decent tactics systems, one word: bullshit.

It might be "dumbed down". It might be "god awful design". But I can't see how consoles can be blamed for it.

Dumbing down implies making simpler. Removing something like tactics which actually made the game easier since you no longer had to control the companion characters directly "dumbed down" combat. Removing tactics didn't dumb the game down, it just made the game more tedious.

Wait, you guys don't adjust the tactics in the tactics window in the character screen?  It's not as extensive as DA:Origins, but it's there.

To say that it's not as extensive as DA:Origins is a massive understatement - it is so pared down that fiddling with the very few settings there hardly warrants calling it "adjusting tactics".

I'm VERY early into the game, still getting the hang of it, and thus far I like the story, like the look of the game, but I'm having a hard time getting used to the controls and how combat works. Just saw and fiddled with the "tactics" options as I leveled up, and could hardly believe my eyes. Carefully setting up precise tactics for combat made for an effective squad in both DA:O and DA2, and in both games, I ended up getting mods that expanded the tactics options further.

I remember as this game was being discussed and speculated on during it's development, my wish for it was an expanded tactics screen, that, to avoid making it too confusing for casual players, could be behind an "advanced settings" button on the tactics screen. Boy did I get the exact opposite of my wish. :(

I don't know what sort of modding possibilities the game has, or if expanding tactics would be within the power of any modder, but one can only hope. I really don't understand this design decision. As pointed out in earlier posts in this thread, the options given are totally insufficient to avoid squad combat becoming quite tedious, with a need to either micromanage, or live with your squad mates making poor choices.

It really is terrible now. I don't think it would even make a difference if there were no tactics system at all it's so bad. Not being able to dictate enemy type, threshold for spells/potions/skills, companion status...it makes combat tedious and obnoxious.

If anything MORE options/tiers/triggers should have been added to the Origins system.

What happened to the companion tactics? Well...

Let us all silently bow our heads in memory of when Bioware trusted us with simple if-then commands.

They had actually convinced me that they had learned from their experiementation with DA2 and understood what elements of DA:O and DA2 the players liked and didn't like going into Inquisition. The tactics system as knew it being pretty much removed from the game shows me how out of touch they still are with the players of their DA franchise...

The tactics are still there, but each move has them attached to it, so its all automated, which means you can't set preferred types of targets for certain spells and such. Overall this is a horrible move. But each move having automatic tactics is nice in some instances. For example, cassandra using her block ability, there are plenty of times I see her with full guard wailing on something.

I'd like to see them add tactics to each ability, so you can open up each ability, set preferred tagets and such forth, and then add some general tactics so I can tell cassandra to stop running halfway across the map and getting surrounded. Set maximum distance one can move from controlled char or specified char.

Overall I severly hate lack of tactics, but I do love the idea of each ability having its own set of tactics, add that in with some general tactics and I think combat would take a huge turn for the better.

I wouldn't mind so much if the removal of tactics had coinciced with a serious improvement to the AI. Which, of course, it hasn't. I just love it when Solas decides that the best target for his barrier is not Cassandra, who's facing down most of the enemies, it's not me, who's being attacked by a terror demon, it's not even Varric who had taken a couple of hits earlier and is on half health. No, it's himself, who's standing at the back of the battlefield without having even been attacked once. Seflish bastard...

Without have tested the tactics and behaviors too much, I actually think a lot of my personal issues could be "fixed" with an addition of "Attack nearest enemy" or "Agressive" behavior in addition to the Defend and Follow option, so I can set my tank to attack someone else than my target or anyone attacking me.

Don't get me wrong, I would prefer Bioware actually reimplement the great deep tactics from DA2, but as I kind of doubt an overhaul of the tactics and behavior is something they would even consider, the above is my alternative wishlist  ;)

As a computer programmer I personally would prefered the old tactics setup, however I think what they have done is better. Now its fairly easy for everyone to use tacts. Most of the time a tactic script was of the form

IF HEALTH LOW TAKE POITIONS

IN SITUATION ### DO TRICK 1

IN SITUATION ### DO TRICK 2

...

IF OUT OF MANA/STAMINA TAKE POTION

DAI now seems to have a high level way of generating this type of script, which in a lot of cases works fine.

The default ones in DAO and DA2 where really bad, so.they seem to have made the automatic ones better (I hope) while not really giving any real control. I think for most players who just used the default ones in DAO and DA2, the current setup is better. However I just hope they will pacth in the old usage at some point.

I would hazard a guess that one reason there is no blood mage player specialisation option in DAI is that there is no way of fitting a blood mage into the current 'tactics' scheem.

Actually, the combo attack tactics are embedded/implied in coding ,so if a target is frozen, a member with a shatter ability at the ready will use it. Been confirmed by BW devs on Twitch.

Also, i'd have to test again, but if I targeted an enemy through tacticam, that member would attack til death, not switch to my target.

I know it's disappointing for many, but in the previous games I'd set them early, forget about them for 20 hours, adjust, then forget for the rest of the game. Only ones I cared about are those to heal under x% threshold, and protect weaker characters; both of them are still there. I always prefer micromanaging in tough encounters.
