In the tooltip for the ability it says that when "your" barrier expires it causes it to freeze nearby enemies.
Now does this mean a barrier YOU cast, or a barrier which is on you?
This is a pretty big deal, as I want to get it for solas only if it works on barriers he cast on other people (IE the tanks) as this would be very helpful, but if it's only on barriers which are on him well it's not quite as helpful.
My main character got this ability. I had solas cast a barrier on me and it didn't do anything when it expired.
Barriers that are cast on you that are destroyed BY ENEMY ATTACKS trigger mana surge. Its so that if you draw aggo and get swarmed, you have auto peel. Combined with Ice armor its a great survivability tool.
So I played it some more and it seems that Aethelwolf is correct, nothing goes boom if the barrier expires without enemies. Although, you still get the free spell. It shows up as a blue circle on the bottom right.
