Why Are PS3 Graphics So God-Awful?

I was so set for this game. I took a day off of work, got this game at 7 am and was playing it by 8am. Well, by playing I mean being horribly disappointed by the absolute garbage that Bioware passed off as textures and meshes.

The hair is terrible. Is simply is. On the off-chance that it's not heinously shiny, it's still nowhere near passable for a game released in 2014, even for a last gen console. The textures, if they even load, range from are-you-serious to barely good. There was a cutscene that took place in front of what was supposed to be a tree, but it looked like someone took a picture of half-blended mashed potatoes, blurred it a little, and used that as the texture. It's a tree. How do you mess a tree up. Don't even get me started on the armor or the atrocious texture pop-in that makes Mass Effect 1 look like it was made by Jesus himself. If you guys need some new texture artists I know a few people who would love a job and can actually do it well.

I really do hope that there is an HD upgrade released for the PS3 and Xbox 360, because this is awful. It actually ruined my entire day because it looks so f###ing heinous.

"But McNinja," you ask, "how can they make the graphics better? the world is simply too big!" Well, maybe if they shortened the draw distance so that we couldn't see past the edge of the universe into freaking Narnia, that might help a little. Maybe they could also not constantly render every single thing in the area so that if it's not in your view, you can't see it. That might help too. Although, given the tree textures I'm not sure they can do that.

Even Ninja Gaiden Black looked better than this, and that was on the ORIGINAL XBOX.

The game is fun, but it looks like it was rendered through a potato. Come on.

While I'm on Xbox 360 rather than PS3, I completely agree.

After years of waiting, I was absolutely pumped for this game. It was crushingly disappointing to finally be able to play it, only to be met with this...monstrosity.

I can honestly say I've never been so displeased with a game before. More atrocious graphics I've never seen.

Of course, poorer performance was to be expected on an older console, but I certainly was not expecting such a huge disparity.

It would be nice to hear some official comment from Bioware regarding this issue.

The textures are very nice on Xbox One. I'm not saying it to gloat. I'm just saying that the new gen version meets my expectations for textures and lighting. (The hair could be better, though).

The digital version for the PS3 looks great, all things considered, so hopefully that means there will be a patch.

because you're on a 10 year old piece of hardware that was mid/low power back in that point in time

Same issues on the 360, and there has been no updates/patches.  "Last gen" is not an excuse.  Skryim has no issues.  The latest two gears games look much better and run like butter.  And don't give me the "tiny areas", there are some decent size areas in that game and no chugging.  I can stare clean across the map and have no issues but when a cutscene of two characters happens the frame rate craters.

The 360 can run a game of this size and detail.  I think bioware just doesn't know what they are doing with newer, high end graphics engines.

I also think there is no excuse for bad look for older gen. Skyrim is huge game but runs for me without bugs and problems on PS3 while looking absolutely beatiful. No excuse for why DAI can't do same or why us as customers shouldnt except DAI as newer game to be as good as Skyrim is graphic and performance-wise. Well, actually DAI seems to run worse than DA2 that has had couple minor bugs during the 100+ hours I have been playing it but nothing game breaking at all. So no excuses.

Panda you realize Skyrim uses a completely different engine than this game, right?

You're saying NO EXCUSES NO EXCUSES but it's a fact that it's not going to look as good on an old platform. There most likely ARE excuses/reasons/justification for the graphics.

Anyways, it's been a known fact that BioWare releases buggy games since KotOR. They always patch them.

And yet skyrim looks better in most ways and definitely runs better.  I don't expect a last gen-version to look as good as next gen, I expect it to run properly.  You're clearly not listening.

I don't completely agree. Graphics wise Skyrim was fine, but at releases was as full (if Not more) of bugs as DAI. DA2 had the Isabela bug that naked the game unplayable.
I still think that they should've delayed the release on last gen and tried to make some things looking better (like hairs, beard and facial textures).
The game being developed for next gen/pc isn't an excuse for This result though. I read that FC4 looks much better. Different games and different engines, but That doesn't mean Bioware couldn't have done better.

I didn't get Skyrim nor DA2 right from the release since I don't do that like.. ever. So maybe Skyrim and DA2 got patched until bugless. Hopefully they will do that for DAI as well. Mainwhile I wait until that and until price drops, hmm like hitting two fly in one go.

Yup, they had a lot of bugs. If you're Not Used to them then I think it's really better to wait and see :).

Again, it seems Far Cry 4 looks much better then DAI on 360. If True it is possible to do better on last gen.

Stop comparing it to other games on different engines with smaller areas.

That means it might Not be possible to make the DAI looks as good as that game, Not that it isn't possible to make better.
Also, DAI doesn't have a single immense open world area, but different ones. I doubt one area is bigger then the whole world in FC4.

Why? 2014 game from BW looks worse than 2011 game from BW. I don't give **** about engine, I'm paying for game not for engine that doesn't work properly.

Why should I?  Skyrim is plenty big and graphically runs just fine.  Gears looks far better and has some good sized areas and runs like butter.  "Different engine" is irrelevant.  If bioware can't make it run smoothly they've done something wrong.

Need for speed rivals is a huge map where you drive and pass fast through different places and is working right without texture bugs all the time.. And is using frostbite 3 so, i compare this game with other using the same engine in the same console and which has to load textures faster than DAI.. And NFS looks much better.

And for people who say we have consoles released in 2006, yeah, are old but there were released a lot of games last 2 years better than this for the same console, so if this isnt another good game for old gen is because BW didnt want to do a good work on this version

Reasons:

1) Frostbite 3 engine was designed for current gen, and doesn't use resources efficiently

2) Despite the long development times and late-term delays, the game was still rushed

Give a programming team a cartridge with extremely limited memory and they will max the thing out and make their code as efficient as possible.  Give them a promise of nearly unlimited resources on a brand new platform, demand it be releaseable day 1 on 5 platforms with a short deadline, and they will write as much code as possible to make it work, efficiency be damned.

it's really not that awful, this game is running next gen hardware on a older gen console, if they pushed the ps3, and xbox 360 any harder they would literally explode, the reason that SOME of the textures look weird is because the game is so huge that they have to sacrifice in some things, the hinterlands alone are bigger then ALL of dragon age origins alone, remember that.

Farcry 4 has a larger open world and looks amazing on PS3, so does Skyrim and GTA V.

If bioware was incapable of producing anything resembling smooth gameplay with decent visuals on last gen consoles, then they might as well not have released it on the Xbox 360 and PS3, because releasing a game in this state does more disservice to customers than not releasing it at all.

Xbox 360 is no better. The textures look like Vice City on the PS2 an the lighting is faaar to harsh. Can I trade those two for the glossy look on my character?
