I feel like my ranged dps classes are purposely trying to sabotage my dragon fights by standing right in their faces.

That's exactly my experience.

I've been trying for hours to kill the dragon in the Hinterlands, but everything constantly falls apart primarily because of my range classes. Whenever the dragon does that move with his wings that pulls everyone in close, my mage and archer have always moved into the area of effect and get instantly killed. I have to constantly pause the game and switch to tac cam to reposition them back to where they are supposed to be. I feel like a nursery school teacher constantly having to put some hyperactive children back in their seat.

Then there is the fact that the AI happily stands in fire patches on the map, never bothering to move out of them. So they also die if I don't manually move them around when necessary. I started out on Nightmare but have steadily reduced the difficulty down to casual and I still get killed because the AI just does not listen. I don't mind micromaning things, I did nothing but micromanage in DAO, but at least in that game the NPCs would execute their orders correctly and hold their position whenever necessary and the game gave you proper tools to micromanage (tac cam is terrible). Plus, I roll a 2H reaver, which requires lots of direct control to be effective, but whenever I take direct control for more than 10 seconds, all my companions just rush in close to the dragon to get killed.

Sorry for the rambling post, but I just needed to vent my frustration for a bit.

They should dish out copies to people under NDAs a couple of months before release and I am sure they would have been told of the problems.

Internal testing can be blind as well, I would guess as they would have insight or knowledge on why things may be happening or implement fixes subconsciously.

As it is a worry if they said yea this is good to go with peoples ranged coming melee and a character told to hold position & then break it because the controlled character is fighting something else. How did that get the thumbs up?

Also surely the reviewers would have flagged things, the IGN guy clocked 90 hours, was no feedback given then and why did BW do nothing or acknowledge a problem.

Alright, my two cents.

First up, the bad: Yes, clearly, the tactics should've been maintained, and there is absolutely NO excuse to scrap this from previous games. None. It baffles me why they did it. If anything, the nw behavior thing confuses me more.

Second, the tactical cam. It sucks. it is not useful as the AI doesn't always do what you say, and it is very hard to get a good view sometimes.

That said... I'm playing on normal, and will nightmare my next run with a mage. But, if your set your ranged characters to defend each other, and your tank to defend itself, I really didn't have any issues, and the AI behaved relatively well... The only time I had to excessively use tac cam was during dragon fights. (If I'm telling you to hold position, god damn hold position!!!)

I like the combat itself and am enjoying myself immensely, but it would have been SOOOOOO much better if we just

a) had our tactics we could set.

B) had ability points we could attribute.

c) a decent working tac camera

The rest of this game is SO polished. Why couldn't those things be?

Sure, I will admit that most of the time the AI really does not seem to be that big of a problem. But that is mostly because the encounters don't last all that long most of the time and you can fare quite well by just assigning each companion a target to kill for the most part.

I only started to really notice the AI problems with the more lengthy and difficult fights, i.e. dragons and bosses. In these fights positioning and group tactics are much more important than when fighting random mobs in a dungeon or in the open, where you pretty much need none of it.

Furthermore, I also started noticing it the most when I got my reaver spec, which really requires a lot of manual control to be effective. Previously I could just leave my warrior alone to do her thing and keep a close eye on the rest of the team, that has become a lot more difficult now.

Problem with the "defend"-Behavior is that the party members will stand in place and do nothing if you don´t command them to attack manually. May be bugged though.

Yeah defend causes my AI helpers to not only stand around but to stand racing the target of their defense so they are always back to the baddies. I've seen folks say they have good luck with that tactic but it isn't working for me.

Sera was taking baths in the crowd again and again - much more often than Varric or Dorian - but I finally found the culprit: something called Shadow Strike, whatever that may be. Disabled it in the tactics and now she stays away a bit better. I guess we may need a list of such abilities so that we can disable them if necessary... LOS (or lack of it) still draws her into the melee, though.

Anyway, how hard could it be to give squishies some basic avoidance behaviour? Works fine for mountain goats and fenrecs.

That's actually pretty logical... shadow STRIKE. That means, get close and punch 'm. Of course she doesn't stay put, then.
