Spirit Essence can drop off of any spirit or demon mob anywhere in any zone. I'm a bit surprised you didn't get enough of them just over the course of regular play. I have 35 of the damn things on my rogue. Which I would share if I could.

Well that makes me feel a little better. Do you know if there are any spirits in the red lyrium part of the coast that requires Varic to access? The most westerly part to destroy the lyrium.

If not what about the fallow mire? I havent done anything with the zone yet besides run around real quick looking for rifts.

If not ill have to open up a new area to find some rifts.

Haven't gotten around to Varric's quest yet so not sure. I keep getting sidetracked. >.>

But there are wraiths in Fallowmire that drop spirit essence, yes. Not a ton of them granted. But they're typically along the main roads in the zone. Especially as you get deeper in.

Im so pissed/sad its unreal. I went to a new zone and farmed a rift a couple times to get the drop. WOOHOO I thought....

Then I realized neither the spirit essence of the other item are registering in my quest log. The book does but nothing else.

Does anyone know a fix for this?

I wish I had never started this quest. Such a stupid way to do a spec.

I've heard of this particular bug here and there. It affects some other quests too but it seemed to be a quest display bug. As long as you have the mats you should still be able to make the Bottle of Smoke at the Quartermaster hopefully. Try going to the Quartermaster in Skyhold and crafting the bottle anyhow.

Some specifics on opening specializations:

Unlock the "Specializations for the Inquisitor" operation by entering the Skyhold War Room and selecting either "Find the Warden" in Ferelden (speak with Varric to unlock), or "Investigate the Western Approach" in Orlais (both cost 8 Power).  When given the option, "Gather your party..." and "Venture Forth".  After listening to Scout Hardy's report on the new area you have unlocked, open the World Map and head back to Skyhold.  Note that companion specializations will be available immediately after entering the new zone you have unlocked.  After returning to Skyhold, the SE quadrant of Skyhold will now be open, and "Specializations for the Inquisitor" in Ferelden will become available as a War Table operation.

Where in the world is Varric's belongings in Skyhold? I understand there are alternatives and where those can be found but I would rather go the route of going through Varric.

Is there somekind of bonus for "completing" all three of the specialization quests? I know you can only pick one spec, but the mission info says that: " While a mage can only truly specialize in one style, studying others can still be of considerable benefit".

No, I think this refers to that you can do all three quests if you'd like, but in the end only select one spec (and thereby completing only one) - it's a bit suboptimal as it leads to either two quests remaining in the journal forever, or two exclamation marks remaining on the mini map in Skyhold.

It's percentage based. If your barrier drops by 50% of your maximum barrier (so 50% is the maximum possible for it to drop) you deal 100% extra damage with that spell. If you cast a spell with half your barrier up, it will be reduced by half again (i.e. 25% of your max barrier), and spell damage will increase by 50%. The actual numbers, i.e. if your barrier is 2000 or 5000 are irrelevant.

So as you can see this ends up being a somewhat situational ability for burst damage for most mages (cast barrier and then immediately cast a high-damage spell), but it works very well for Knight-Enchanters who have the capacity to keep their barrier up constantly.

Anyone have a problem of books not there for Tempest or Assassin? I've looked in Sera's room and next to Cole (I actually thought I had already got the books) but they are not there.  I went to the merchant in Val and they are not there.  I've completed all of the other parts of both quests but no books.  I'm sure I had them and am wondering if I sold them by mistake if they got put in the valuables.   Any help?

You have to now craft the thing, go to skyhold quatermaster and craft it there, or any other requisitions bench.

Spirit Blade wrong weapon damage description and damage test (hidden damage bonus in upgrade)

Just wanted to share a math and possible bug with Spirit Blade.

So, first of, the description of this spell tells "300% weapon damage" in my language (I have Polish version so text is in my language). Even with patched to latest version game, it still says"300% weapon damage".

Also, I saw on some forums that Spirit Blade upgrade adds 100% weapon damage. Seeing that in Patch 2 there was no notes of fixing description of Spirit Blade, I assumied that it I have to calculate actuall damage myself and see if it is actuall 300% or 400% weapon damage in base. This is for vanilla version 1.0.0 (no patches installed!!) and latest patched version test.

Weapon: 100 damage staff

Level: 12

Place for testing : Crestwood, storming Keep (because of Human enemies, didn't want any specific resistances to interfere)

TEST 1 (no patch installed)

Mabari, human enemies damage of Spirit Blade (only 1 point in it, no Deflect Projectiles upgrade!)- 250-270 damage per swing! Tested few times.

TEST 2 (no patch installed)

2 points in Spirit Blade (Deflect Projectiles upgrade added)- 350-377 damage per swing! There is a hidden 100% damage bous in reflect projectiles upgrade to Spirit Blade. Probably it was meant to be in just base Spirit Blade, but some bug occurs.

TEST 3 (Patch 2 plus Hotfix plus anyoter Origin updates)

Description of Spirit Blade still says 300% weapon damage (checked also on my fiance DA:I). Can probably be polish translatated text not being patched.

Mabari, human enemies (Crestwood, Keep). Spirit Blade 1 point (no Deflect Projectiles upgrade!)- 250-270 damage per swing! Tested few times.

TEST 4 (Patch 2 plus Hotfix plus anyoter Origin updates)

2 points in Spirit Blade (Deflect Projectiles upgrade added)- 350-377 damage per swing! The hidden 100% damage bnus is still there.

TESTS CONCLUSION

Now, I don't know how damage resistance works etc. However, If my Staff has 100 damage, and Spirit blade deals up to 270-75 damage non-crit- then your description saying 400% weapon damage is probably wrong, and Spirit Blade (not upgraded) deals 300% weapon damage (Patch 2 plus Hotfix)

However, its upgrade to deflect projectiles adds bonus 100% damage and damage jump up to 370 per swing. That means that with upgrade Spirit Blade damage is ACTUAL 400%. Without upgrade, it is still 300% probably (can't calculate enemy resistance so I just look on numbers poping above enemies).

Tested on level 12 mage, on two PCs, for both vanilla version and Patch 2 plus Hotfix.

To sum up- Upgrade Spirit Blade for additional 100% weapon damage, description saying 400% weapon damage is probably wrong. Also if your description says 300% damage and you see in some videos or wiki 400% weapon damage it is just description bug. There is no difference in Spirit Blade base damagei in pre-patch and post-patch game.

Hope you will find it helpfull.

Tested on NIghtmare.

EDIT TO TEST: The 300% vs 400% weapon damage description question (which one is correct) might still be not answered. Spirit Blade on same area (Crestwood) deals up to 500-540 damage per swing to demons from Rifts (pre-patch nad patched).

However, two other main results- hidden 100% bonus in upgrade and no diffrence between patched and pre-patched damage description is correct.

Wish I know how damage and resistance are calculated to check if it is actual 400% (and 300% description is wrong) or 300% (and 400% description is wrong/bug).

If anyone with bigger experience/knowledge can help- I'd appreciate that.
