Has anyone specced into assasin and picked up skills like hidden blades that allow some close range combat while still using a bow?
My ideal setup is to go archer with some cqb capability as well

So I have currently been playing as a double dagger rogue and have really enjoyed it. I respecced to archery to try it out and I did t like having to remain at range ALL the time. However looking at the assasin specializations and some later game skills, it seems like even an archery rogue can get a few CQB skills.
Has anyone specced into assasin and picked up skills like hidden blades that allow some close range combat while still using a bow?

I don't think hidden blades is CQB, basically you throw a dagger from I guess any distance and then the "hidden blades phantoms of you" hit the target from 3 sides. But your actual character is still wherever you were when throwing the 'ability/dagger'.

Ok thanks for the info. Guess I might stick with daggers then.
Have you played an archer at even mid level? At low level it was too slow and immobile for me, but maybe with evade and dagger throwing and such archery can be a little bit more fluid.

Playing as an archer; love it. You can spam attack and still walk around, use evade to get behind Cassandra's target and remove aggro. Range for range, I prefer archer to mage.
But I was wandering the same thing about the assassin tree, if it made sense for an archer. Guess I'll try and respec at worse if it's not worth it.

Good to see that some of you enjoy playing Archer. My human rogue is an archer and, having just come fresh out of the Prologue, I don't feel like I've gotten the hang of it yet (well, I have yet to get the hang of the battle system, but that's a different story).
I want to spec him full Archery, with some points in Saboteur and Stealth. Problem is, I can't think of any of the specializations that could go well with that. Anyone further ahead have any advice on that?

There is a passive ability that increases strafing to 100% and it's the only class that can move when attacking. So if you think slow, play a mage, and you are rooted and cannot move. That is annoying.
Assassins tree might be good with passives and the hidden blades still as a ranged attack doing a lot of damage. I haven't played far at all yet, but trying out several classes I am forming an idea.
When I did the prologue with Archer I had zero issue with the first boss fight the pride demon, no party member fell or even got hurt much. Replayed with a mage and my party kept wiping, so did I and I ran out of 8 potions and barely won. Made no sense at all, both plays were normal difficulty.
I hear mage gets better after specialization.
I'll probably end up just going with Archer because it seems to pack a punch and still survive pretty good being ranged and get out of harm abilities etc. I also like being mobile.
Curious about warrior too. I imagine Sword and Board will be very survivable with all that guard.
I digress..

Can anyone confirm whether Shadow Strikes does or doesn't work with a bow.
There is no "requires daggers" comment, but the documentation on tooltips isn't exactly stellar.

Not being able to switch weapons sets is a pain IMO... ie. switching to daggers if enemy gets too close to your archer.

^^^^This is a really niggle for me as well as being bone-numbingly stupid; I lost count of the number of times my Rogue Archer got melee'd by a Shade or Wraith in the Prologue and I couldn't drop down into Daggers mode but instead had to turn tail, run away and then start shooting at them from a distance, all the while while they continued advancing on me. (I suspect I've foolishly used up one of my Attribute points by putting it into Twin Fangs.
) It's not like there's even a 'Stun' attack that Archers had in DAO I can use instead. Very poor game design imo.

I disliked the archer roles in the last two games. However, I'm really loving playing as one in this game. I wouldn't say they're overpowered, but they deal nice damage, and have a few good escapes if you're in trouble. I run with 2 mage companions and a tank companion, and I've not had to use many potions to save myself or my party. Very fun class once you get a few skills.

You can respec once for free (well, 1 gold) so you can take that point out of daggers. Also, I switched to an archer last night and their mobility and ability to get out of melee range does get better if you stick with it.

I think they removed it to have your characters more prototypical. You have nine companions, so they emphasized singularity.
Also I think they removed it cuz not that many people used it. I never did in my multiple play throughs of Origins & 2.

The leaping shot ability with its upgrade is extremely useful CC as well as full draws upgrade. The archery tree is really a thing of beauty imo
So true about Leaping Shot upgrade. I'd venture to say it's an Archer's most important skill. A CC that does decent damage, has a fast CD and gets you way the hell out of dodge is awesome.

Longshot and its upgrade, Archer's Lance has been really good for early group mashing for me. Can't wait to see how Explosive shot fares alongside that.

Full Draw is a must for archer; it is especially great when you see your enemies from afar and they have not seen you yet; if you can target an archer or a mage; it's one-shot kill often (depending on your lvl); the damage against 100% hp enemies is immense.
It is the first thing I do in every combat; helps against those two-handed mammoths to start the fight; it takes about 10% of their health right there.

Full Draw while in stealth is just cheese, played human rogue archer in my first playthrough. It is very strong to be honest, but then again i really went for crafting and keeping my gear optimized all the time. It matters alot at dragon fights etc. I did not like explosive shot, anyone know if its any good?. Skipped that part of the tree.
