Combat is pretty awful because I don't control my entire party... Or am I missing something?

Played for about 10 hours so far.

And the combat has been infuriating. Lousy controls (KB+M) aside, the thing that's making the combat an absolute unenjoyable mess is that they dumbed down the Tactics and basically killed it.

Solas freezes frozen opponents.

Throws barrier on Varric who's 30 feet away from an enemy.

Cassandra taunts an enemy who's already hitting her.

My INQ moves away from closing the rift the moment I switch control over to any other companion.

Am I missing something here?

The game's combat wants to be action-based, right down to having to manually attack (holding down the LMB), but like I said in another thread, any and all action is just killed dead with having to pause every 3 seconds because the companion AI is practically non-existant.

Please, if anyone's found a way to do combat properly other than to babysit your 3 companions 99% of the time, let me know.

It's genuinely killing my enjoyment of the game.

Huh?  In tactical mode you can control each party members action.  Just turn off AI on all of them

I would play in tactical mode but the controls are really wonky on a PC, however it is workable.  I use tactics mode solely to re-position and give certain basic orders.

I found the AI in general is good about using guard abilities but not that great about who to throw a barrier on so I would recommend micromanaging barrier usage. (I play nightmare+ff).  At higher difficulties I want Cassandra taunting whenever it is up to build up her guard.

I believe barrier is a party spell btw.  When Solas casts it, all of my party gets it.

It is actually an AOE, so you can get most of your party if they are clumped.  If you have 2 mages it is often worthwhile to have one cast it on the group just prior to engaging.

yep, the lack of a functional tactics screen similar to (or equal to) what DA1/2 had is a real killer.. what the hell were they thinking when they pushed this decision? killing a core feature of your role-playing franchise was among a set of incredibly stupid design choices they've made

Go in behavior and play around with the follow/defend command. I'm currently playing with

- Solas Defend Cassandra (he is prioritizing her safety, aka throw Barrier at her)

- Varric follow Cassandra (always attack what Cass is attacking unless I tell him otherwise)

- Cassandra Defend controlled character (unless I'm telling her otherwise while paused)

- PC follow controlled character (I rarely switch so didn't change it).

These are all at Follow Controlled Character by default which means they attack who the controlled character is attacking.

I also reduced the stamina/mana pool to 30% from 50% otherwise they barely use actives. If you want a character to prioritize an ability go in the Tactic screen and set it to star too.

I couldn't agree more with the original post.  Now I love Bioware and the games they make, and I was really excited about this one....but after a few hours in the frustration is growing.

I would trade the tactical camera in a heartbeat if it meant I could customize each characters AI ( like i DA2).  I miss the tactics, for me that was half the fun.  Put together a party and configure their tactics to be complimentary.  Then sit back and watch them wipe the floor with whatever was thrown at me.

Right now I can't even set a proper ambush because I can't get a single party member to hold position.

Ok, before this becomes a rant I think I'm going to head over to the feedback section.

Combat on pc is still an absolute nightmare. The tactical camera is drunk and needs to take a nap. The view is so limited, and it flies through the roof to block my view.

I still can't figure out how to use choke points effectively. When I order specific ranged squadmates to an elevated position, they'll go there, and then immediately run back down to get slaugthered by melee enemies.

And the tactics/behavior feels even more gimped than in DA2. If the reason to simplify it was that the AI could figure out how to attack better this time around, then why do ranged companions STILL walk into melee deathtraps?

Ugh...

Yeah the tactical camera is terrible.  I wish you could zoom in and out to get a better overall picture of the battles  Also it has trouble moving over rocks and other elevated parts of the map.

There is a hold command you can use to stop your ranged characters from moving. And make sure you set the stamina/mana threshold really low. There is no point in saving stamina/mana. Just make use of passives that help regenerate mana/stamina and you'll have a plentiful supply.

The game world itself is very immersive and HUGE, so I'm giving Bioware kudos for that.  However, my thoughts on the combat pretty much match this to a tee.  They brought back the tactical camera and actually managed to go backwards from DA2 IMO, as far as the combat is concerned.  I'm having fits trying to properly control my party in combat.

I wish. But nah, it's an AoE, so it's targeted.

For my part, I've been pretty happy with the AI. Cassandra does nice things like handle blocking herself with the right moves. And I SWEAR Solas figured out something was resistant to Cold and used Lightning instead. It was awesome.

The most tragic moment was when I was fighting for my life against a bear and Cassandra was nowhere to be found. I discovered that she had decided a nearby ram was a more dangerous target and had walked a long way away in pursuit of it.  :pinched:

And do yourself a favor: Don't engage in melee combat on rugged terrain. It'll give you an ulcer.

but not that great about who to throw a barrier on

How about setting tactics for mage to "GUARD CASS" or whoever is going to be in the thick of it?

The only way to control what your party do is using tactical camera.. the problem? is awful, but is the only way I've found to have a combat experience similar to Origins and DA:2. If not using tactical, every party member is attacking same enemy that I am, not being able to split my party (tank for boss while I take down left side adds with my warrior dps and right side adds with my mage, for example)

I've not encountered most of these problems, but I'm playing on a PS4, so maybe that's why?  I find the tactical camera very helpful in adjusting strategies mid-stream.  Now, I just need to get the various conditions and cross-class combos down so I can really exploit situations.

Set your tank to follow itself. It will then focus on whatever you tell it to attack and once that's dead move on to the next closest enemy. Then set your DPS to follow the tank or the controlled player. Whichever you prefer.
