Just trying to decide if I should go easy with it off or man up and turn it on?
I plan on pausing a lot in tactical mode with fights - so - I should be able to manage with it on. Just not sure if I want to bother?

I have mine on, I actually have to watch out for warrior abilities that do AoE
I was planning on going nightmare+friendly fire on, but after an hour I just had to turn it off. The bad pc UI and the medicore companion AI make friendly fire go from being a good challenge to a chore, which isn't any fun for me.
Does anyone have a list of what abilities have friendly fire? I was a bit surprised when I used chain lighting (which did not have ff in DA1 or DA2) and ended up frying Casandra!
Playing with FF on is really a different game, as a lot of upgrades move single target abilities to AOE abilities, so you will probably want to avoid them!
I see people complaining about the companion AI - and I get it. But - if you pause a lot and use tactical mode a lot to give companions specific instructions - seems like it wouldn't be an issue.
That said - I suspect there are a lot of people that don't enjoy that style of play.

I know if no list. I agree that chain lightening is hard to manage.
I have FF on and I am trying to pick upgrades that only target single enemies. However, I am not seeing as much friendly fire as I expected. For example, if I swing a big 2H weapon and the arc passes through one of my party they seem unscathed, so I think FF is only active for using actual abilities.
Even then it is not clear because the descriptions on abilities are rather inadequate. They usually say they will damage "enemies", so does that mean no friendly fire? Chain lightning is obvious, but mind blast is not so clear. So if anyone knows which do FF and which don't I would appreciate the info.
In tactical mode if we could see the radius or different colors highlighting the chance of hitting our characters for spells like chain lightning it would help signifigantly. The AOE radius torches my mage sometimes he looks outside of it.
On, obviously.
Looks really stupid when a mage can just cast a fireball in the middle of the fight and only enemies are affected. Breaks immersion.

I am waiting for this. Will probably restart with FF on when I find out. Proably take a while.
Using FF while knowing what abliities cause FF will restrict how you build characters so as to avoid FF. So for example in DA2 all my mages used primal and I just ignored 2 handed warriors.
I think it may be time to do some testing.
Varric, just stand by that tree please...
Really disappointed that some abilities don't have friendly fire, not even on casual mode. I didn't even know about the chain lightening but the immolate ability burns party members as well.
Wait what..? I'm confused.
I don't feel in control of the party well enough, and I don't think the game is very conducive to allowing that control. So I keep it off because who knows what any of these AI party members will do at any given moment. If I don't directly control my rogues, they go right in front of people for some reason. You'd think the AI would be good enough to not do this if the option is excluded.
It'll be off and staying off.
I started with it on since I beat the first two games on Nightmare, but controls/camera/interface and invisible 360 hitboxes made me turn them off. It's too much of a pain to try to play with it on if you use a Two-Hander warrior. Mighty Blow has such a bizarre hitbox it will often hit teammates on your side or even behind you. It's not like in Origins you could not wipe out your party with two-handed sweep or dual weapon sweep, here it's very likely to happen.
FF shouldn't be too much of an issue with 1 tank + 3 ranged I think though. It's just multiple melee charcaters killing themsevles on invisible aoe hitboxes that's the problem.
Off because of the horrible AI behavior and tactical controls, unlike in DAO at least you can do some behavior (albeit not perfect) setups.
Nightmare+FF 4 Life.
had it on, then I turned it off. The a.i is dumb in tactical mode so yeah... off.
On until I found out that the AI liked casting chain-lightening at nearby enemies and frying half my party. That combined with the crappy tactical view making proper positioning difficult (or impossible in side buildings), and lack of fine control with the AI means it got switched off. The crappy interface is responsible for most of the combat difficulty which means I down to playing on Hard after nightmare for DA:O and 2.
Hard+FF, i just disable some of the AOE abilites for companions and bulls charge on casandra (she keep chargin away like a moron lol). I play as Double Dagger rogue and it mostly fine.
