I found the cave and killed all the mages before I started this side quest.  Now the game is stuck on the message "Deal with the apostates" and there is a quest marker on the mouth of the cave, but the cave is empty and I don't know how to complete the quest

Hm....make absolutely shore they're all dead? There are apostates outside the cave in the forest, and there's a lot of them - so search the Witchwood thoroughly.

 

The cave is also fairly large and has a back area with a boss mage, so maybe make sure you went all the way back?

Explore near the cave, there is more of them.

I went back to Haven and when I returned everyone had respawned

I can't get this quest to work.  I have killed all the mages outside the barrier several times, reset it, killed again, on and on. The barrier NEVER comes down, I can see the other mages inside the barrier but I cannot reach them.  Seems very bugged to me.

You have to use magic to attack the barrier and break it.

Wow, thank you so much!  I am not sure how I missed this, but it made sense after.  Usually you get an icon or something the identifies you need a specific class, it was not on the barrier.   All finished now, thank you so much.

The barriers do actually give out hints, but only once you get very close to them. If you stay at a distance it can be easy to miss. (They're also not entirely correct - they state you can only use the opposite element to break the barrier, but any element will do, the opposite element just takes them down faster.)
