Now I admit I did not carry out an official poll/survey but scouring the net as well as the forums, it seems that dwarves are easily the least popular race to play. Tons of qunari, elves and a fair number of humans but hardly any dwarves, the reasons for which I can only speculate about; perhaps the short stocky nature of them. Short people are disadvantaged in real life in real terms, earning less money and receiving less social credit than tall people and I am positing it might be some sort of psychological bleedover effect. Somehow it is hard to imagine a midget as a hero perhaps? Not really someone to look up to, pun intended. Note, I am not claiming no one plays dwarves only that they are rarer than others races to the point where it might be statistically significant. That is my dwarf inquisitor Leif btw...input, thoughts and observations are welcome...

It's a general dislike. I remember they tried to add dwarves in warhammer 40k and desisted after a while because nobody bought them. It's consistently the least played race in many different rpgs.

I had thought with the hobbit movies and that grim dude from game of thrones more people might give dwarves a try, but no.

1. People have a stupid stick up their butt about short people.  2. They are the least supported race with no in-race romances and fewer companions than anybody except Qunari (and even they now have the potential for a romance).  The lack of same size romance options makes most of their romance scenes comically unbearable, and the capacity for romances does motivate a lot of people in what they pick to play.

My first warden was a dwarf, I started a human after seeing the Morrigan romance scene. It was just.....wrong.

Yea, if Varric had been a romance, I'd have played a dwarf in two heartbeats.  Since he's not, I decided to play a Qunari instead for this very reason.  I can't handle the comical romance cutscenes.  I did play a no-romance male dwarf in Dragon Age Origins though.

Because as people mentioned above it isnt really supported. Sure they might be ingame but for a game i tend to want to feel cool. And it is hard to do that when equipment looks silly or clips and cut scences get all jerked up. Im currently running a Qunari and everything has lined up. So it might be a dwarf next if everythings seems ok.

I always pick the race with best traits/bonuses/immunities. If they are fairly balanced the one with stats that suits better to my playstyle.

If there are no significant advantages, I play Humans and rarely Elves. Can't get into playing Dwarves.

On the other hand I love dwarven companions. Khelgar, Varric, Oghren, Sigrun etc. I liked them a lot.

They're limited to two classes, which is the only reason why I don't like playing as one.

They are short and stocky, not tall, willowy and graceful. They don't have the cool outlier attraction of a Qunari either.

They are also pretty badly stereotyped in the eyes of many players as either comic relief (oghren) or grim broody sorts.  Fewer players have any good idea of how a dwarf culture and society would function. Dragon Age is one of the few games that really makes dwarves interesting culturally and shows non stereotyped dwarves (once Varric is introduced).

They are and probably still will be the race I play the least but I still play them at least once if I have the option. I loved my dwarf noble in Origins and I am definitely going to play a dwarf in Inquisition, at some point.

Are they? Heck if it was an option I would have chosen Oghren and Varric if I could.   Sadly they have something against romancing dwarfs.   :crying:

If it were just a matter of height, I could stomach playing a dwarf, but the stockiness ruins them for me. I also like to play elegant and classy characters and everything about dwarves goes against that.

But a dwarf that is not stocky....is more a gnome or halfling than a dwarf.

Because the games never really focus on them. Nobody wants to be the B-plot. It's always human kingdoms and human problems, occasionally with an elven district.

And then the dwarves WAAAAAY over here.

Also they're missing the drinking bonus, which is very important.

I'll more than likely be playing a Dwarf as my second playthrough (assuming everything goes well the first time, and I actually want to play again.)

Dwarf commoner was my second-favourite Origin in the first one.

Well for me its because of how short I am in real life. In games I get a chance to be as beautiful, badass and with different races as tall as I want to be.

If there were a dwarven love interest I might feel more inclined to play a dwarf but until that time, no thanks.

I generally don't like bulky characters. But I might try a warrior Dwarf for fun in DAI
