Why are dwarves the least popular race to play in your opinion?

I guess because qunari are exotic and new, elves are fairly popular anyway and humans are like default choice?

And I have to admit that only in Dragon Age I actually like dwarves; elsewhere they aren't that interesting. <_<

My third game in DAI is reserved for Cadash, and second game is based on Dwarf Commoner origin, so I myself do like playing as dwarf and would recommend that to others ;)

Mages being the most popular class and dwarves being restricted from mage probably contributes. In Origins I played a lot of Dwarves but I played more elves. I only played a handful of humans.

Limited Classes
Limited Romance
Limited Height
Limited Companions
And they're not a very compelling group of individuals. You have Qunari and their Qun, Dalish and their Elven Gods, Humans and...their everything.

But Dwarves come from a darkspawn-infested hole in the ground filled with horrific politics. That sums them up for me.

Plus look at companions.

Oghren, Sigrun, Varric. (Shale, if you want to count them although their character primarily revolves around being a Golem.)

I can count the number of dwarves that joined my party on one hand.

Elves?
Zevran, Velanna, Merrill, Fenris, Sera, Solas. Elves get better representation as a whole.

Qunari? Iron Bull and Sten are powerful windows to their culture.

Humans? Wynne, Morrigan, Leliana, Nathaniel, Alistair, Loghain, Anders, Isabella, Aveline, so and so on.

And we've never had a Dwarven romance. Not once. Qunari romance, yes.

Actually I think the problem is less about being short and more about not being able to sexualize the characters. They are deemed less attractive and that effects those who want to play them. On top of that elves for example have things like oppression issues working for them, people like to play "underdogs" so to speak. Elves fit that. Same reason why mages are very popular over warriors or rogues (in the DA world at least). Plus people tend to play things close to their experience, but not too far away. It is hard to see much of yourself in a dwarf because of the large differences in structure. Again why people tend to play humans and elves, closer to them. If polled I doubt qunari would actually be high on the list. Either way much easier to sexualize them which does add to the appeal. I'll be playing one of each, but I'll admit it is hard for me to play characters I don't find attractive so dwarves generally aren't something I play until much later. Though I was quite pleased by the way the women look, they actually look very decent.

I decided to go with a dwarven rogue first myself. Why? Because humans are like roaches crawling almost everywhere and elves are sissy, dandelion eaters! And we all know those giant mandeer get their horns caught on everything! Don't deny it, you know it's true. Badarsery, booze, and beards! Oh, and battleaxes! What's not to love?!

All joking aside though, in the DA universe they are actually really interesting lore wise and the orgin stories were probably my favorites. They go oustide the box some with them, which gives them their own identity compared to most fantasy dwarves; yet they still retain the familiarities that make them what they are. Bioware did a good job in this regard.

Dwarves just fit the sidekick mold too perfectly for me to play one as the protagonist.

I will say that the addition of a good female Dwarven romance would make a huge difference. Scout Harding is just too adorable and Sigrun was awesome!

Gaider's irrational hatred of all things Dwarf is known.

My go-to RPG arhce-type is a Halfling warrior.

Been obsessed with Halflings since getting read The Hobbit to me as a kid.

So my Grey Warden is a slim, beardless, short-haired dwarf.

I really want to recreate him in DA:I but the PARADOX! ...instead I am thinking of making a female dwarf version -she is even shorter! Yay! Even more halfling-like!

Well, I don't like their culture and behavior in most fantasy stories/movies/games/etc.. You know, constantly getting drunk, too stuck in their traditions.

In DA, it's because of their culture and religion. The way they treat people from Dust Down...

Personally, I have enjoyed playing a Dwarf since my early days of D&D in '75. Then later, when NWN1 was released, it became my privilege to represent Dwarven Archers to the various campaigns and PW's. From this sprang Clan McJagger; warriors and rogues (and an occasional Wizard, Monk, or Cleric) that attempted to bring enjoyment and puns to the various worlds that permitted them sanctuary.

They are titled Clan McJagger, for when they do battle, they resemble rolling stones.

Dwarves are Fantasy.

Because most players are wimps. Dwarves rock. Simple as that. Elves are pansies.

For me, this time, I was really tempted to eventually play a Dwarf, granted my last possible playthrough I have 'planned' but I really wanted to play a Dwarf, and then I saw the 'Origin' for the Inquisition Dwarf and I was like...no way, no how.  So that is my answer.

Slightly off topic: Does anyone know who the romance options for dwarven characters are?

Because only a select few people can handle the awesome that is Dwarf, others spontaneously explode as their bodies just can't take it.

Cause they're small.

Basically this, im a big jessie, i like the romance content it adds to my story as the pc.

In Origins i loved both the Dwarf origin stories, but my characters were always forever alone, i just found romancing any companion with my dwarf to be to damn awkward, simple as that

For me, its because they exist in real life, and in real life they are human and not another race. I do not mind a race that is small but saying "We need a new race, how about Dwarves, theres no option to make a human character small so use Dwarves."

I love the backstory of all the races but Dwarves exist. Elves do not exist, no human has pointed ears just like that and for Qunari, well no human looks anything like that. Its just a case of, Dwarves are humans irl, so I wish it was a more inventive race than just short humans.

Thats just my opinion though, and it applies to all fantasy media, not just Dragon age.

They way they treat people from dust town?  Compared to what?  How the Dalish treat everyone else?  How humans treat the elves (and their own poor)?  I'm guessing that you only play qunari, because they are only ones who seem vaguely egalitarian (unless you are a mage)?

But, yes, its the stereotype and the failure to conform to modern views of attractiveness that tends to doom them.

For me, it's the 25% ranged defense of the Elves. Those archers hurt, yo!

I think Cassandra and Josephine for males.  I think Blackwall and Iron Bull.  Sera may be available for females as well.

Ya I feel kinda bad, I had my mind set on dwarf since race options were announced but then I jumped the train and went with qunari after seeing their impressive character creator. No wonder bioware doesn't add dwarf romances and race-gates, too much work for a feature players won't even use

I'm sure that it has to do with a combination of the fact that they are short, thick, and not usually conventionally attractive.

I personally love dwarves.  I only had two humans (and no elves) out of all of my DA: O playthroughts (about 10).  I'm rolling a qunari inquisitor for my first playthrough in DA: I, but I've already created a male and female dwarf who are waiting for their turns.  I'm sure that my playthroughs will skew a little towards dwarves in DA: I.

They can't be mages. That's why I don't play them. If there was some sort of "lyrium gadgeteer" or something I could channel Tony Stark with, I'd play one, but mage is my preferred job.

I did mod Dragon Age Origins so I could have a dwarf mage, and it was a blast.... the Dragon Age Keep did not like that data. Actually, it hated most of my data because they were modded in one way or another.

I'm short and chubby in real life, much like a DA dwarf and hate how my body looks, so I generally play elves because I think they are the most beautiful race personally and also like all the story surrounding them. But that's just my opinion. xD;; I use DA as escapism so I play how I wish I looked and were.

Varric is my bff forever though!
