Generally for the same reason that dwarves are the less popular race in most fantasy series. They're overshadowed by their much more awesome and plot-important neighbors.

The only place I can think of an exception is with the Hobbit series which primarily focuses on dwarves and their culture. But that gets overshadowed in LOTR with elves, humans and hobbits having central focus, thus becoming more popular with the mainstream.

The case of the dwarves isn't helped in Dragon Age considering that they can't be mages. Not even here in Inquisition where the Fade Breach gave a perfectly plausible explanation for why a dwarf inquisitor could be a mage without being a plot hole. Plus, the other races just have more impact, focus, diversity and interest in comparison to the dwarves.

i like being a mage and having tall characters. can't speak for the rest but that is about it for me. (that and in origins, having "greatswords" shrink to my one and only dwarve characters size just looked stupid) i appreciate the idea and choice of being a dwarve, just not my cup of tea. much prefer them as NPC's though. ogrehn and varic best support 2K14 :)

Hey,

For me it's quite simple:

They can't be mages - so sadly I will not play them (mostly), as I play mostly mages...and no they are not boring (and I quite hate having to chase after characters with melee characters...when an enemy is selected the character should stick to the enemy automatically IMHO)...might try an archer though :)

greetings LAX

The Dwarves feel more interesting to play for this game. I didn't see the appeal in a Grey Warden Dwarf in Origins, but I think I'm gonna roll one this time with Sumalee's voice. Having a past as a criminal is also pretty edgy.

For me, their culture is very interesting but hard for me to RP the first time through because I have to really think through all decisions as a dwarf, it doesn't feel natural, because I find their culture the weirdest, so they will never be my first pick. My second playthrough is usually mage in DA (first is rogue) so, can't be second. I might get around to them in a third play.

I think their general numbers/popularity is definitely affected by the "no mage" thing.

Less viable options.

No magic, weird sight lines, some awkward animation, etc.

Personally I love dwarves in and out of DA (as you might guess from my name and avatar), but somehow I never choose a dwarf as my main/'canon' character. The dwarf noble is definitely my favourite origin in DA:O, though, and so far I'm loving my wise guy Cadash.

Too short and small, makes for an awkward romance with humans or elves. I guess I can maybe see the appeal of a female dwarf and a taller romantic counterpart, but not the other way around. And the distinctive lack of dwarven romances for either males or females certainly don't help at all.

Oh, and Dwarf rogues doing backflips. Lolnope.

IMO, if you don't play at least one dwarven Inquisitor, you're missing out. And my adorable Cadash Inquisitor agrees.

They've begun to feel more and more disconnected from things since Origins- people have strong reactions to the Qun, elves, mages, the Chantry etc. Everyone's kind of ambivalent on dwarves which makes them less interesting to me.

I am 5'9"; my first gf was 6'2". The only awkward part was attempting to place my arm around her shoulder during a movie; started holding hands more often instead. Have also dated basketball players, volleyball coaches, and other athletic beauties. And the basic reason as to why they chose to date someone of a lesser height: I was willing to ask, while most were intimidated by the difference in height.

As for backflips; stronger leg muscles developed from getting things from the top shelf.... :D

Personally I love Dwarves, probably more so than Elves, a dwarf and a giant hammer, schuweeet but yeah there's no Same-size Romance might be a detractor.

<- Go Dwarves!

When I first played DAO I jumped at the occasion to play Dwarf. I like their rugged pragmatic outlook. I discovered a very original point of view in Dragon Age, Dwarves tend to be portrayed as highly structured but Bioware pushed the envelope making them very political. I liked that. Their take on elves is also original but less so as the declining race as already be done to death with elves.

all the humans are the same size and in real life im much taller than other and thats why i choose qunari and for dwarves uhh... they are just too short .i find it hard to imagine a dwarf slaying a high dragon lol..

Because they're just little chubby dumplings and I can never take them seriously in combat situations lol. Plus they are child sized so they remind me of kids with their cute little arms and stubby little legs. :-P

Played one first in DAO and in DAI now.  It is funny seeing how shocked everyone is that a dwarf can be the savior.  But I played a gnome in EQ and WoW.  Go figure.  Remember, being short in games is not always a hindrance to movement.

Where did you find out that the female dwarf can not romance Varric? I would like to know. I've started playing as a female dwarf to romance him, but if he cant be romanced. I want to create a different character.

Varric isn't romanceable at all.

The people that can be romanced are:

Cullen - human/elf women only

Iron Bull - anybody

Blackwall - women only

Solas - female elves only

Dorian - men only

Sera - women only

Josephine - anybody

Cassandra - men only

I don't believe in playing any non-magic class in fantasy games :P . Quite frankly I'd rather play inquisition 5 times as a mage than play it fot 10 minutes as a dwarf

As others have said, mostly because they're background characters. In your average generic fantasy setting, dwarves are kind of like the little toothpick they put in club sandwiches. It's there, you interact with it a little while you take it out, you don't think about it again. Jennifer Hepler helped make them very unique and a fun culture. Unfortunately, their only city is situated under Ferelden, a country that we've seen more than enough of. I think people would like dwarves a lot more if we got a game set in Orzammar exclusively. Unfortunately, that's never going to happen.

As we head north, dwarves are just going to fade more into the background or basically just be short humans culture-wise. The only chance we have of seeing real Orzammar dwarves again would be in Tevinter with the dwarven embassy.
