I really wish Bioware could find some other giant arthropods to throw at players.

So it seems the spiders are pretty tame compared to the first two games. Do they all spawn on the ground, and in a relatively far distance?
In the Forbidden Oasis they swarm from all sides in a small-ish room (I think it was the entrance to a mine). That bit (and the Fade) were scary, but I think there's a few chances they missed both here and in DA2.
It's always annoyed me that Hawke / the Inquisitor could enter these crawlspaces in search for loot and never get a spider on their back for the effort. That seems like a natural consequence really, even though it would be a nasty surprise.
There is a particular letter quest in the Emerald Graves between two lovers meeting for a picnic that would probably be best avoided by arachnophobes.
The devs never heard of trap door spiders.
Imagine the horror of being pulled down or having one suddenly rearing up in your face.

Yeah I found that cave last night ...

There's one part of the plot that involves lots of small spiders.
I miss the spiders in DA2 that were as big as houses.
No! Those things were horrifically awful, and one of the reasons I'll never again touch DA2!
You monster. ![]()
I run from them. There is part of the caves on the Storm Coast where the pathfinding for companions is borked, and if you go in there, hello spiders. Your companions run into a corner like a bunch of wusses hiding since they can't jump a foot-high ledge and think somehow they can go through a crack smaller than an arrowslit on the battlements. Argh, that cave gives me fits. Scares my cats when I squeak and run.
The big fat ones are fun though. My inquisitor was 'bounced' into the air by a horde of them yesterday. ![]()

One really big one, two with unique names (big one is one of them) some little ones, normal giant spiders the usual Thedas mix, well except that one but hey, what else would it be?
Joy.
Can you tell me/us in which zone that happens?
I really wish devs would stop putting giant spiders in all the fantasy games. Morrowind was a breath of fresh air for not having them.
First time I found those spider caves near the Storm Coast starting camp, I said eff that and legged it. (And yes, that one spider in the Hinterlands was an unexpected as well as unpleasant surprise, too.) Yesterday I came back and forced myself to explore them although the combination of cramped + dark + spiders is nightmare fodder for this arachno- and claustrophobe. The tactical camera jumping to newly-selected characters also does not help when said character is one of my sword & board gals (Inquisitor & Cassandra) staring the blighters right into all eight eyes. I managed by focusing on the mechanics, not really looking at them, and willing myself to think "generic combat target" instead of "argh crap bigass spider", but it wasn't fun.
The area in question is suppose to invoke terror, so you will probably be getting a truer rp experience out of it than some. That said, the zone is not terribly cramped or dark, so you should be able to at least see them coming. More than that I won't say, unless you don't mind reveals, but you'll know it when you get there. If you're looking to get through it without having too much enemy face time, you might consider playing one of your mage or ranged rouge characters for that area.
As for the use of giant spiders, they are pretty cliche I'll admit, but if I'm honest so are elves, dragons, and orc-like creatures. Spiders are a short-cut to scary, which is probably why Resident Evil uses them as well. I don't see them disappearing in this series.
Lets just be thankful they don't use giant centipedes.
I'm waiting for DAI2...Revenge of the Fennec
I will say spiders are overdone, I want a giant mantis or killer mosquitos.

(hint:"Ironically, Spiders" NPC)
This one might have been the single most hilarious moment in any Bioware game, ever.

Shhhhhhhhhh do not give them ideas
Was going in a treasure room in multiplayer, and a giant one dropped from the ceiling, which was a bit startling. Where does this happen in single player?

In some caves. Forbidden Oasis has one cave with lot of spiders. Main quest Here Lies the Abyss has quite many spiders in fade part, they are resembling people's fears ^^;
