I wanted to start a thread about the things I like in Inquisition. Now, I'm well aware that the game is not perfect by any means and that there are legitimate gripes to have regarding optimization, PC controls and fetch quests among others. Thos are accounted for in several threads, and it's good, Bioware needs that feedback and will hopefully act on it. But I wanted to talk about the things people liked in the game here, so please direct your issues to the threads opened for that.

Personally;

-I like the soundtrack. A lot. It's sometimes absent in combat, but when it's there? Really good, and the atmospheric music is great too.

-Spells look and feel good. I particularily like Static Cage, Fire Mine, Fade Step and Barrier. The upgrade to Static Cage that makes enemies take extra damage when hit? Toss a Chain Lightning, Explosive Shot and Whirlwind in there, and enemies just blow up. Very nice. And I haven't reached specializations yet.

-Visuals are just gorgeous, that's expected but still. The water in the Oasis in particular is amazing, even on medium/high settings.

-Actual impact on choices! Such a welcome break from DA2's linearity. When was the last time we had two completely different, mutually exclusive 1 hour+ quests depending on which choice we made in a Bioware game? Bringing different companions or choosing different speech options in your Perks also also allows some alternative outcomes to quests, such as recruiting Inquisition agents.

-Skyhold is great. You don't it right off the bat, but when you do, it's well worth the wait. Albeit more casual outfits would be nice, pls Bioware.

-Characters are good. I really like Iron Bull, Vivienne, Cassandra and Cole. The Bull especially is far from a stereotypical ''me smash bad guys'' musclehead, and Cass is just all kinds of awesome. The cast as a whole is far less of a dysfonctional madhouse than the DA2 one, for that alone I'm grateful.

What about you folks?

Haven't played enough for my full impressions, but so far, the characters and dialogue are a HUGE plus.  Way better than DA2, and I would argue better than the Mass Effect games or maybe even Origins.  Will need to play longer to make that bold claim though.  The characters so far are complex and interesting, the conversations with them are plentiful and varied, and I'm not the only one asking questions anymore.  Characters ask me what I think, about the Maker, about the Mage-Templar war, and I've felt like the options I wanted were always there (except for in one instance, where I wanted to agree with a mage that Templars are necessary, and the closest I got was "Interesting opinion you have there.")  This is a HUGE plus and makes me feel like a character in the world, not just an instrument by which other characters reveal themselves.

Also, it's not just your companions that have interesting stories.  Threnn the Requisition Officer has an interesting opinion on Loghain.  Anan the Alchemist is being forced to heal people, which is completely beneath him!  Minaeve just wants to go back to the Circle and study, and look after her Tranquil friends.  It seems like everyone has a story!

Also also, the tavern with the bard.  That bard's voice is gorgeous, her songs are haunting or fun to listen to, and I sat there 10 minutes just enraptured.  Go to the tavern, guys.  This goes for the rest of the soundtrack, too: the music is just amazing.  I was just standing still in the Hinterlands for 5 minutes yesterday.  I had to turn the computer off and go to bed, but I just couldn't, because the music hadn't stopped and it was so gorgeous.

Hey Ashes, where's the tavern?

Okay so it's in Haven, close to the Chantry down a little tiny hill.  Dunno if there's a marker for it, I found it completely by accident.  But it's within the inner palisade of the town, I guess you could say.

There's also the tavern-woman, Filda, who is gushing over you as the Herald of Andraste.

Called the Singing Maiden, I found that out after reading a Codex entry that was nailed to the wall of it.  I love this game.

Gods, I can't believe I missed it. I thought I scoured Haven. I'm bad at this. Haha. Well thanks, yet another thing to look forward to when I'm home later!

I spent 30 minutes out in the area around Haven, just following the trail of Elfroot.  I'm sure I haven't even come close to picking up all of it, still so many nooks and crannies and buildings I haven't explored in Haven.

And that's the small, home base area!  How am I going to get through the Hinterlands?!

Only 30 minutes? :P

I spent like 2 hours there (still there), roaming around not worrying about the big hole in the sky, enjoying the sceneries, picking up elfroots and iron. Reading codex.... still trying to find a seat in the tavern... so many chairs and I cant sit in any of them

I like: the graphics

the music

the open world

the animations

the adorable nugs

wandering around and then realizing I have no idea where I am or how to get back to where I should be.

I've played like 5-6 hours. I did only some side stuff in Hinterlands (and got murdered horribly by a Terror demon backed up by a few friends) and I talked to people in Haven, doing some crafting tutorials, stuff like that.

1. Graphics. The game is incredibly impressive visually, despite me not running it on max settings (High/Ultra mix, no AA and some cuts on Tasselation).

This is the first BioWare game I've played, that is truly an artistic and technical marvel. Mass Effect 3 looked decent, but it was nowhere near the top titles of the year. Inquisition is amazing, and where it could possibly lack on technical side, it amazes with art style. Just gorgeous.

2. Characters. I had my first few conversations with major characters (Solas, Varric, Cassandra, Leliana and Josephine - haven't spoken one on one with Cullen yet, and I haven't recruited any other companions) - and I can say I'm really liking this so far. Writing is top notch, all characters are interesting so far. Varric is still one of my favorites, but Cassandra is growing on me, to the degree where I may choose to romance her instead of Josephine. Seems like BioWare even improved, on their already strongest aspect.

3. Story. While I haven't unlocked much, and I'm slow to follow the story missions, so far I like the beginning far better than I did with Origins and DA2. There is mystery here, a faceless antagonist, unknown event that protagonist cannot remember, political intrigues are starting to rise, and what's the most important - on top of heroic adventure BioWare is known from, there is also a personal story thread.

4. Equipment. Finally a mage can look incredibly awesome as well. Crafting seems to be nice so far - not too complicated, but seems like you can customize a lot - if you have resources. I'm not entirely sure about level restrictions on items - but oh well. It's just a bit frustrating to carry a cowl in the inventory for 2 hours now, and still have to gain 2 levels to wear it.

I'll probably like more, after I play it more.

Combat is solid, but I need to see how it will develop with leveling up and game progression.

I absolutely loved having my ass kicked by a Rift and wanting to level up, improve gear and try again. I haven't had an experience like this in an RPG since... probably old Infinity Engine games. A great move, along with healing restrictions.

I actually like being able to name my own weapon quite a lot. Named my first set of daggers nimble and quick (dexterity and cunning respectively).

One thing I'm finding interesting in the early stages of the game is that you basically flesh out your own backstory through dialogue with the companions and advisors.

So many things!

  • Unexpected Characters: I was fully prepared to murder knife both Cole and Cassandra before I started. Now, fifteen or so hours in, I'm totally obsessed with being Cassie's best friend and Cole has even grown on me.  Solas, I thought would be slightly boring, and now I find him quite mysterious and I think my inquisitor might be a little...maybe frightened isn't the word, but wary. Sera is delightfully weird, Bull is amazing, Blackwall is unexpectedly charming, Dorian is my GBF....I just (for the first time ever I think in a Bioware game)..really find something I like about every single companion and character. Varric and Leli have changed enough to make sense, you feel like these people have done and seen things that have changed them since you last saw them. It's really very wonderful.
  • Locale: I've really only been to Haven and the Hinterlands- (I had just gotten to Skyhold when my husband forced me to quit last night)- but so far these locations are just beautiful, so much to see and do. And I love that I don't actually have to if I don't want to- but truthfully, I want to.
  • Horses: I was dubious but man it's so.much.fun. to ride around on my horse. I wish I could name him, though.
  • Story. Specifically the Journey to Skyhold scenes.
    Spoiler
  • Pretty much everything besides a few minor annoyances that I'm just going to have to get used to or forgive. :)

+Acknowledgment of your character's background and being able to define your character. Currently playing a male Dalish elf mage who can't stand being worshiped or called the herald, believes in his own gods, yet is diplomatic (generally kind) and direct when he has to be. I love how he is acknowledged.

+Cassandra. I thought she'd be an annoying stick in the mud grump  but she's actually likeable. I'm pleasantly surprised.

+Iron Bull. That Vega voice.

+Crafting being surprisingly easy.

+Val Royeaux. More awesome than Kirkwall/Denerim ever was. The masks, the accents, the decor, it feels very alive. And I like that Orlesians are portrayed as reasonable and not all snobbish or crazy (giving a human side to them).

+Dorian. Everything about Dorian. The voice. The personality. The pretty looks (and Iron Bull saying so). Seriously he's tempting me despite my goal being to #ridethebull.

+Voice is very well done (playing the British male voice). Easy listening.

+Many of the characters I've actually loved so far. Mother Giselle, Scout Harding, even the minor NPCs got some serious personality and character. Makes the world feel alive.

+The music. Simply amazing. Even got that World Map theme from the DA site on there.

Overall I'm having a blast with DAI :) :) :) . Well worth getting a new 360 for.

So far, the bard in Singing Maiden Tavern is my favorite thing in the game. They sing the songs in French if you find the bard in Orlais.

I love the customization of armor and weapons and how you can partly customize for maximized attributes or for design aesthetic. After my inventory upgrade I started keeping armors around that looked good on characters despite of being under leveled. I love the formal attire schematic.

I also loved the action Dialogue Wheel that appears when you're right in the middle of gameplay and you press R3 to toggle controls to the dialogue wheel or you can ignore it if the action is too tight. Please keep that Bioware. It was excellent!

Oh and naturally I love the characters. I really wanna spend more time with Cassandra, Sera, Bull and the others as well though. I hope we get some expanded story content at some point, because I'd love to bond even more with this colorful cast.

I could probably list hundreds of things I like, but off the top of my head:

1. Characters. Characters, characters, characters. I think this is my favourite bunch of companions (and advisors!) in any BioWare game ever. And it doesn't stop there - there's also an excellent supporting cast. The dialogue is excellent as ever, and the voice actors consistently hit this one out of the park. (I can't even begin to decide who my favourite is this time. Freddie Prinze Jr.? Indira Varma? Ramon Tikaram? Allegra Clarke? Good old Brian Bloom? The superfluously talented Claudia Black?)

2. Exploration. BioWare haven't pulled off a world this expansive since the Baldur's Gate days, and it's great to be able to just roam around discovering things.

3. Music. No insult to Inon Zurr, but this is easily my favourite DA soundtrack so far. The bard songs are a lovely touch. In fact, the sound design in general is excellent, from the creature sounds to the subtle noise a veilfire rune makes when you walk past it.

4. Race selection. I hadn't realised how much I missed it until they told us it was coming back. Please never go away again, dwarf player character! I loved that there was a lot more acknowledgement of your race and background than in DAO, as well.

5. Crafting. I don't normally get into it that much in RPGs, but I liked this system a lot. Venturing out into the wilderness in search of more Infused Vyrantium Samite never got old.

6. The war table. An engaging side game in itself, and a great way to catch up with old friends without actually having them appear. (I may have made a squeaking noise every time something involving a returning character popped up. I think my neighbours already hate me, if they didn't already after the sound I made during the Wicked Grace scene.)

7. The Wicked Grace scene.

8. Puzzles! Loved the Asturiums.

9. The character creator. (Although, it's still terribly lit.)

10. Nuggalopes. Having spent the entire development of DAI asking for my dwarf to be able to ride a pony: I was wrong. I don't want a pony. I want more nuggalopes. Fields full of nuggalopes, gambolling about.

.... aaaaaaand I could keep going, but ten is a nice round number.
