I should probably start by saying that I in general really like the game.

I have been playing for 23 hours now and I'm really disappointed in the open world. It's just filled with really generic MMO-esque quests that got old halfway through the Hinterlands and all the areas are so huge it takes ages to get anywhere (which might not have been a problem if mounts weren't so useless). Looting resources in the field is also an enormous pain, I wish they would just remove the animation for doing it to make it a bit more bearable.

None of this would be an issue for me if you weren't forced to do the open world stuff to progress though the main quests. You need the power to unlock the main quests for whatever reason and if you only do main quests so will you quickly become extremely underleveled.

It all just feels like a desperate attempt to try to be Skyrim instead of doing the things that Bioware is good at.

It's felt fine to me so far, but I will concede that my avoidance of such games outside of this one and a couple of Bethesda installments surely factors into my reaction. Even in the Hinterlands though I personally feel a sense of lore behind many of the things I'm doing, by virtue of the richness of the world BioWare has crafted over multiple titles.

I agree. I was worried for DA:I because my experience with Skyrim was boring, pointless and tedious(even fighting dragons got boring). Anywhere I went in Skyrim, I never got a sense of why I should be here. In DA:i, so far( stuck in Hinterlands doing side quest, when I should do the main mission), I feel I have purpose being in this area, and the side quest don't really feel tedious to me. Also the environment is simply breathtaking.

Skyrim was boring, DAI - just like NV - feels more rewarding even on "useless" stuff because you're discovering the world, learning more about the lore etc

I'm not quite sure I understand what the complaint is from the OP.

You're upset that you have to do quests in the game and because it's open world, you actually have to run around and do things for the people.  What are you expecting to do?  Just grind on some mobs to level up?  Like I seriously don't understand the complaint.

Looting resources is a pain because of the animation?  I guess they should have made it like pacman where you can just run overtop a resource and you automatically gobble it up.

Honestly, your complaints are a bit ridiculous.

Blasphemy!

But seriously, I'm enjoying the openworld. I love exploring and finding things and just seeing where that nug is going.  I'm easily distracted and this game seems to cater to that.

The more open worlded take on Dragon Age seems to be dependant on what you prefer. Yes it can seem like a grind if you strip it down to its basics, but you have to remember that we're talking about a tiny group of people trying to build an army. It needs to feel as though you're doing actual work to make this Inquisition work, not just get your army on a silver platter.

So far, all the "Fetch quests" have made sense and the beautiful landscapes and various lore to discover has seemed extremely fun thus far.

To each their own I guess :P

I hope Bioware does not listen to people like this. When they do, thats when they water down stuff.

To be accurate, watering down would be including more content with less quality. I think what you may have meant to use the metaphor that, if Bioware listened, they would be throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Yes and no. I found them tedious and wanted to get on with the main story but they grew on me. Unlike other games i felt it was leading towards something. My power and fame increases with everyone i help so i feel as if it is worth it. I am in no rush with the main quest. It fits in with the story. Your inquistion members are a bunch of nobody's you gotta put in the work.

Yeah, the open world is kind of disappointing, especially since the PC interface makes it hard to stay organized with the countless quests that are thrown at you.

I enjoy every bit of this game. Best thing I've played since Skyrim (400+ hours across 3 characters) I don't think I'll Eclipse those numbers (only 9 hours into inquisition and haven't a single story mission post-prologue) in this game but it's definitely the best game I've played all year. Haven't found a single thing about the game I don't like. Which Is impressive.

Pretty much this. I feel more immersed in the DA world with each new thing I discover.

That's the exact issue I had with Skyrim, so big yet so empty. When I get my hands on DA:I I am hoping it doesn't flow in the same vein.

I'm liking the open world enough that I have barely even bothered to use the mounts.

Although it looks hilariously awkward when my Inquisitor starts bunny hopping up the sides of mountains.

Granted, I have only played that game for roughly 8 hours so far, but I have not found the open-world in DA:I to be tedious at all.  It actually feels very similar to Skyrim, just in third person, because no matter what direction I go there always seems to be something to do, something to kill, or something to find.  In fact, that hardest thing for me right now is attempting to justify the fact that I went and got the horse as soon as I could because I figured it would help me get across the open-world faster - only to find out that I was getting off the thing every other second in order to go off and explore something, or pick something up.

For me, this has always been a huge sell in terms of enjoying an RPG.  Sure, I am interested in a storyline that pays off and interesting characters that add to the experience, but mostly I love being able to see some distant castle and have the option to drop everything else I may have been doing just so I can go poke around for a bit.

I tend to become bored with open world games simply because there's not enough depth to them.  I'd prefer a fully-fleshed out, but linear game to a expansive world sparely filled with content.  I haven't made it far enough into DA:I to judge how sparse and shallow its open world is, so I won't comment on that yet.  But I will say that I've yet to see an open-world game that holds my interest enough for me to complete it.  That doesn't give me a lot of confidence in the decision of both Bioware and CD Projekt Red to turn to open-world development....

Well, there is an aspect of DAI that can make this sort of thing worse than Skyrim, if you're not really a fan of open-world in the first place. Everything scales in Skyrim, right? This means that levelling after you've picked up a couple of basic perks for your style (say, Impact for a Destruction mage) is either meaningless or maybe even counterproductive. And cash is all-but-useless, since all you can buy are cosmetic things, gear that's going to drop randomly anyway, and meaningless levels. The advantage of this is that there's never any reason to do a quest that doesn't sound like fun to do.

But in DAI you do want those levels and that stuff, so I can see a player feeling compelled to do missions he doesn't think are interesting in themselves.

I just much preferred how it worked in DAO and even DA2 where I would level up naturally while doing the main storyline with other stuff being very much optional instead of doing some extremely uncompelling bear ass hunting. I'm simply not a fan of the way the franchise went, I don't think every game needs to be open world.

e; I basically feel that I have to do glorified mob grinding in Inquisition which I never felt that I needed in the earlier games in the series.

Do you think everything was handed out to you in Dragon Age Origins?
