Hi everyone,

I am strongly considering playing as a mage on my first playthrough, solely because arcane warrior was my favorite spec in DA:O.  I understand that knight enchanter is somewhat different, as it doesn't seem like you can equip heavy armor.  Although, I saw something saying you can craft some light armor that looks like heavy armor for aesthetics at least.  Also, I know you don't use a physical sword but some kind of spirit sword which you can get into melee range and attack with.  Finally, it looks like knight enchanter has various defensive and support spells.

This is what I know, but I would love to hear from anyone who has actually unlocked the spec and has tested it out a bit.  My main concern is whether or not it is "tanky" like the arcane warrior was.  Can you use a knight enchanter as a replacement for a sword and board character?  From the skills I have seen, it looks like it may still be too squishy to act as main tank for the party, so I would like to know if it works out practically as a "tanky" character.  Also, how melee focused is it?  Do you just auto attack with the spirit sword and use your regular mage spells?

I am stuck at the introduction wondering if I want to play a knight enchanter or a rogue. :P  Thanks in advance for your comments.

I strongly recommend focusing on the fire tree for a KE. Fade Shield + Chaotic Focus makes things dead quickly. Each time you cast a fire spell it gets massively boosted and drains half your shield, then winds up replenishing your shield by 30% of the damage dealt. With fire's AoE spells you can quickly build up a steamroller of kaboom!

For tanking, they can also do that. Going deep in the Ice and Spirit trees (supplemented with Static Charge) gives a very good +Con and +Willpower bonus making you highly resilient to damage. Adding in crafted armor and upgrades and you can tank all day.

Have you tested/noticed if Chaotic focus applies to spells other than fire? I realize the tool tip says fire spells, but since passives from one weapon type actually apply to other despite the description, I was wondering if the same were true for this passive.

passives always work no matter the weapon you have equipped. However, this is meaningless to mages since they can only use staves and do not have weapon specific skill trees. Chaotic Focus should only work with fire spells as its description states.

Thanks.  Man, it will be hard to decide which way to go on this.  I suspect I could probably grab the fire tree abilities as well as the spirit and ice eventually, but I am not sure how I want to prioritize these once I unlock the specialization.  However, I am thinking I will respec once I unlock KE, grab barrier (for casting on my party mostly), then put my remaining points into fire until I get Chaotic Focus and Fire Mine.  Then push down barrier to get the bonus shields.

Dont neglect barrier on yourself either, even before you get knight enchanter there are a few good abilities that key off having a barrier on yourself. its nice.

Knight Enchanter. I played as Vivianne after Specialisations open up and....I found myself spamming the 1 key like crazy to fire off her sword attack. It felt like a bit too much to do every single fight. Any suggestions?

You can just hold the 1 key down instead of spamming it, and you will keep attacking. :)

Ah, so it is the 1 key instead of the regular attack button.  Does holding the 1 key make it hard to move with WASD during a fight?

Or any number key you assign it to I guess.

(sorry for double post)

Yes, and it works like melee.

So, not too enthusiastic about it since having to move into range is a pain. DA2 moved into range for you, and in Tactical View you do move into range.

I need to play around a bit more and see if there is a way around not having a move-to-hit ability. The graphics, and cameras just aren't suited to a proper Action RPG playstyle that requires you to move manually to your target. You could find yourself missing although the opponent seems tobe right infront you because it is just a little bit out of range.

Yeah, for melee characters I have been holding the left mouse button to attack, while staying near the target with WASD.  However, it seems like it would be harder to move around with WASD and hold a number key, since you are then using one hand for both actions.

Thats why you get a naga mouse with side buttons. I bind all my spells to it - I honestly couldn't go back if I tried. Super easy to WASD, right mouse turn, and use abilities all at the same time.

The KE can be a great class. At least for me it is. Some say it is OP'ed, but it depends on ones view. I use the spirit blade when I get into trouble, and one can switch from spells to spirit blade with the push of a button. It is super fast. You can use your regular spells, and then what ever hotkey you have your spirit blade on, just use it, and go back to your spells again.

It is similar to the arcane warrior in Origins. As far as heavy armor, any character can wear heavy armor if you find some silverite (spelling) and use it when crafting your armor. Using it lets anyone wear heavy armor.

Hope that helps

How did you manage to map the side buttons? Did you set them to register as other keys?

You can still wear any armor with any class, you just have to craft it with the right material for mage armor, it has to be made out of Dales Loden Wool, for rogue armor Snoufleur Skin, and warrior Silverite. Although mage and rogue armors are much more leveled with warrior armor in this game, so I wouldn't worry about it.
Beyond that, fade step with its upgrade, and most of the Spirit tree (if not all) boost KE up to being op. With all of KE's abilities, it'll be exceedingly difficult for people to do damage to your health, with your barrier constantly regenerating while using your melee attack. Which will be useful as you have the healing focus ability; so any perks (such as heal to kill) that heal your character are especially useful for boss battles.

I've got a Naga Epic, and it has side buttons as well. Interesting thing, though: they're programmed to register to the computer as either the number keys along the top of the keyboard, or the number pad keys, and which one it is can be changed just by flipping a switch on the mouse. This means all you have to do is map the skills to the number keys along the top of the keyboard as usual, then press the appropriate button on the mouse instead of on the keyboard. As long as the switch is set to 123 mode and not NumPad mode, pressing the 1 key on the mouse triggers the skill mapped to the 1 key on the keyboard.

Yeah, I've just fiddled with the key assignments on my alienware tactx K+M so that 'k' and 'l' are mapped to my thumb buttons, so Spirit Blade and Fade Step are controlled by my mouse. No idea why Bioware didn't bother adding support for further mouse buttons in this, they did it for ever other DA game and the whole ME trilogy.
