I think part of it is that it plans out how the character moves so if you try to do something that cant be walked. It doesnt let you
PC. This tactical mode is a disaster.

Yeah it acts like a character mapping tool. Instead of automatically mapping the move you dictate, we have to manually map the route to our target. In my limited (14 hours of game play (at least 30% exploration) I have had issues with trees and foliage blocking my overhead view. This makes it difficult to develop a proper strategy. Plus, the limited height does not allow a good view of a battle location. To develop a proper strategy you need to piece the parts together and hope you have the entire picture. It seems to be sufficient for Normal play where you set up an initial hits and pretty much let your party go with an occasional re-target on more difficult mobs. However, for Hard and Nightmare this is going to be quite frustrating.

The main problem that I have is the click to attack. That's not really so bad. However, when I have 5 enemies in front of me, all I have to do is click once, hold the mouse button down until all of them are dead. No aiming, no nothing. Click once and done.
I mean, the biggest thing I'm looking for is when I start firing straight. Even if I did start playing with a controller, hold down right trigger 'till all 5 enemies are dead. Big woo-hooo. Surprise, it's bingo night!

All they needed to do is copy the control scheme from Origins 1:1 and it would have been perfect for PC. For consoles they would only have needed to slightly modify it, i.e. thumbstick click to enter tactical view and such.
I wonder who's bright idea it was to give us such terrible controls.

There are terrible, terrible problems with combat. Outside of that, though, this is an excellent game--in fact, outside of the combat, I'd say this is easily DA:O level and surpassing it in many ways (barring the dialog of course).

The game might actually be good, but I can't get over how bad combat is either.

How can you tell if the game is fantastic? It's completely undocumented.Graphics are not everything idiot lol... hence minecraft is played by millions each day even on xbox one....

I find it extremely cumbersome to control the camera and give orders. I haven't seen RPG party mechanics this clumsy out of the box since NWN2.

Disaster is hyperbolic.
I think the controls are a bit clunky, but after spending time with them they aren't too bad. It'd be nice to be able to zoom out more. The lack of true auto attack sucks, and targeting can be finicky, but holding down the button or playing in tactical full time is not too taxing. Honestly, I think the biggest issue I have with the game is the absence of the sophisticated tactics featured in the prior installments; I really wonder why that decision was made.
I haven't gotten very far yet, but overall I like many aspects of the game.

It's terrible and I cannot get used to something that is completely buggy and horrendous. What is there to get used to? How am I supposed to get used to something this bad when the dragon age origins tactical mode is about a billion times superior? It makes no sense. This is 2014 right?
I shouldn't have to get used to something this bad. It should be reworked and patched because this isn't what I wanted to pay for.

Plenty of people find it playable. It isn't as intuitive or smooth as Origins though.
If it's that upsetting, get a refund. That's your perogative as a consumer.

To the new camera's credit, I gotta say I wasn't expecting to get much use out of being able to change the camera angle while in tactical view, but I've actually gotten a lot of use out of that. It almost covers the fact that a lot of battlefields are filled with trees that get between the camera and the action.

The game is far better on PC, which can also use controller but actually run at 60 fps and ultra settings.
Its just the tactical cam sucks on KB/M ![]()

I agree. We cant zoom out enough.Moving the character with wsda is wonky. The old click and go there was great. Its weird how they took out the good stuff. Not being able to click on enemies to target is unfortunate.Tactics are gone.I guess it was changed for consoles. Its a shame now I want to buy Far cry4 and wait for some patches. But I doubt they care at this point. They have been making PC games forever and must know these changes are for the worse for us. It is obvious when so many are complaining about the same things. It does not exactly make many of us want to pre order again.

I remember back when PC gamers and their skill actually carried a measure of respect among fellow gamers. They would play games like original EQ which was so vague in its tutorials that it basically started you in a dark hole, with a knife, and said "welcome to the rape house noob cakes, want some pain cake?"
Now they just whine about PC controls not being optimized and every other word mentions 4k dpi. As with any other interest or venue that becomes more mainstream, the loudest of the bunch are new comers who have no idea why something was "elite" or exclusive to start with, and just latch hoping to garner some measure of entitlement which they have no real claim to.
I was around for those days, and it just annoys me how much the talent pool has become so thoroughly diluted by try hards. If the controls are too hard for you, stop whining and quit.

I'm using the R buttom to attack and TAB to change targets. It's the default mapping. Seriously it's not that bad, you just have to get used to it.
The tactical mode, in the other hand, is ridiculous. But you can get used to it too... took me some solid 10 hours to.
I have a X360 controller but I just can't see myself playing a RPG game with a controller.

You're missing the point.
With a mage, go ahead and create one. Click once, anywhere on the screen and don't let go of the mouse button. Anywhere, doesn't matter if it's up in the sky, anywhere. And watch the enemies fall. There is absolutely no targeting or strategy required. I just keep on hitting 1 Chain lightning and 3 (I don't know what it does) whenever they pop up. No targeting or strategy required for those either.
That's what I'm talking about.

It is a disaster compared to Origins. However since this game is obviously made to be played in action mode, with your pals on auto, I don't think it matters much. I haven't used tactics mode at all.

Overall I found the entire KB&M controls to be bad. But to be absolutely honest I have never been a fan of the KOTOR/Origins system of holding down right-click to look, makes my wrist ache. The TAC Cam on the other hand is a mess. It just does not work as intended; or maybe the default controls are messed up; but within 10 min of starting the game I switched to controller; and its much better. Just like Skyrim; this game was designed for a controller, its better to play with one.
TLDR; I know this will be compared to Origins; and I would never play origins with a controller; but in the current state Controller + PC is the way to play this game; until we can get Origins style controls added in a Patch.

Because you don't use it, it doesn't matter? Really?
TBH, I've said from the start Tac Cam should never have been a part of the pc version. It's redundant. PC could already do everything the tac cam lets you do without needing to go into a separate 'mode'. And the fact that they changed the way combat works in and out of Tac Cam was the absolute worst decision they could make. It's the definition of the word shoehorn.
Auto attack being the most useful feature getting the screwjob.

Play on Hard / Hardcore; not normal, I am ~ lvl 10 and I got wiped a few times while closing breaches since they regularly spawn enemies 2-4 levels above your level. The health mechanic also adds a lot to the strategy. Like you have to keep barriers up to make sure people dont lose health and use up the valuable potions in minor fights.
A revenant in the undead area literally 1 shotted each member of my party one by one after using his pull power; still havent beaten that fight yet. Unlike DA2 where i probably died zero times..
I agree that actual crosshair targeting for PC would have been cool; especially for archers... but the entire engine is not built that way; neither were DAO or DA2
