I agree the hair in this game is terrible. I feel they could have spent some time refining them.
Hairstyles, overall

I also agree, the hair is just awful. To me it seems mostly male styles. The ugly bulky braid on the back of the head and giant balding forehead on the front clips character ears which looks ridiculous. I actually completely dislike character creation altogether. It's clunkly and very difficult to see what some of the options even do. When you have to use the sliders there is no way turn you character this way or that to see what the effect is. On one of the options you actually have to go back to the main menu, turn your character, and then go back to what you were editing. Why? Did no one at Bioware actually use character creation?

I like almost everything about the CC. The lighting is excellent and while the pointers can be confusing at first, it provides much better options than just sliders. I also appreciate that the sliders are clickable rather than just sliding like in DA2.
I really have to agree about the hair though. There are absolutely no good hairs. They look helmet-y, the colors are wonky (the black is blue-black), and most of the styles just make me shudder. I would have loved if they'd just had a couple of the more popular styles from DA:O and DA2, like the bob with bangs and the longer bob with braids. They can even give me Morrigan's bun. I'm tired of having to choose between ugly hair or uglier hair. I would pay for a DLC just to add those three styles back into the DA universe.

+1 to more hairstyles in DLC, the lack of pretty long hair is truely disappointing. =(
P.S. Bioware, take a leaf out of the community-created hair-mods for DA1/2/ME, please: Pretty, fine, long hair, most of them even without major clipping issues.

Anybody knows more game done with this engine? Wonder if it is a design choice or a limitation. Same for the tactical view problems.

Hm, why would engine limitations be an issue if it was perfectly possible to mod great-looking hair into DA1 that was developed half a decade ago? I'm not asking for each strand of hair to be animated separately... I'm fine with running into minor hair clipping issues... if it means being able to give my inquisitor a somewhat pretty haircut.
Meh.
(And yeah this issue is definitely minor compared to others being discussed atm -- PC controls, chiefly, but it's one more thing that dampens my enjoyment of an otherwise very enjoyable, outstanding game.)

I'm actually surprised, I thought surely I'd get flamed for this thread -- but apparently I am *not* in fact the only one with this issue. Now, whether EA/Bioware listen to us? Hmmmmm ...

Do not fear. Your fellow character creation lovers are here~!
And hair is always what most people get excited about. Bioware should have always and already known this. T_T

Has there been a single Dragon Age game that has offered ACTUAL long hair styles? Uhh, nope. I don't think that's entirely unrealistic to ask for either, considering in those times, I believe having longer hair was kinda popular.
Anyhow, if having many more options for hair styles consists of like, six different shaved head styles, thennnn... no thanks.
There's only maybe three hair styles that I can even stomach.
It really is a shame what a disappointment the hair customization was.
I mean, come on.
A character's design greatly impacts a player's experience I think. I mean, most people I know spend more time making their character than anything else almost.
I really think they should consider making little customization packs, or if not that, make it more welcoming for cosmetic mods, cos let's be real: Dragon Age Origins hair mods? the best. I don't know why none of the developers took a gander at those and considered even using any of those mods as an idea for hair styles. You'd see from the number of times those mods have been downloaded that they're immensely popular, and just BLAHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Give us prettier hair styles, please. Not all of us can handle having a shaved head or signs of balding on our ladies.

I've seen this complaint before and though it doesn't affect me personally it is rather sad there are no black hairstyles in the game. So I'm in favor of it.
And I support more hairstyles. Long hair especially. I can deal with clipping issues. Hell, I had to suffer through the weirdness that was DAO characters folding their arms through each other. It didn't bother me, so it seems to be cherrypicking what clipping issues we deal with and what ones we don't.
Out of curiosity is the braided ponytail that was in DAO still there? Because I'll be annoyed if it isn't, since that was a large part of my DN's look. Also what are the Dwarven beards like?

I am more upset at how different the avatar looks in game after CC. I can accept the nasty looks that are available for the females, especially the Qunari females, but every avatar I have made looks funny and walks like a man. The body is strange and we should be able to have customized some of our bodies. the horn and hair on qunari females is not a large selection, we had more options in previous games, My Avatar to the left is from CC of DA and looks 100 percent better than any i could make in DAI. Then when I find a look in DAI I can accept to play the game with, I get out of CC and it is very different looking. SO I delete it make a new one.

No, the braided ponytail is not in the set. Essentially the four hairstyles that are least unattractive are the bun, the short ponytail with the bangs, and the shorter/parted hair-unbound styles. That's it.
Part of the 'walking funny' I've seen, @Lady Mutare, is due to the much-vaunted "thigh gap" that's being written in to more and more games. Defiance has a MAJOR issue with this. Essentially, in order to provide the thigh gap that seems to be so popular, they have to spread the legs out further on the skeleton than is actually normal, which provides a rolling, back-and-forth motion as each leg moves around the unnatural pivot. Additionally, the slouch they've written in doesn't help any.
In more news, what I've seen lots with CC-to-game crossover is that, no matter how your makeup looks in the CC, or shadows in the cheek/jaw structure, when you get into the game everything's far more pronounced. I can have makeup set very nice in CC but when it ports over into the game, it's like I decided to just go goth. Or the shadows in the cheeks/jaw are over-pronounced. I love CC except the hair, but they really need to help us with it going from CC to game. I can't tell you how many characters I've deleted and rerolled, playing with the sliders, trying to figure out what's going to give my character the look she desires, without being able to *really* see it in CC. Lighten up the intensity too much and it's like they have nothing on. Don't lighten it enough and you've got gothzilla. Again, blech.

The sheer number of buzzcuts was mindboggling, I don’t understand what that’s about. I half suspected that there are some styles that only have the base layer and not the actual hair that made it into the game…
…
I like the style I picked (and the one immediately to the left of it, and that’s about it) but even its execution leaves something to be desired:

We definitely need more hair options across the board; male and female, all races. I was disappointed with how few options there are, and I keep coming back to the same one or two when creating characters. It's a shame, because the expanded face options are really impressive.

There are one or two that I think I could be okay with (though none of them are for my preferred race), but the overall selection is pretty disappointing, especially for female characters.
Maybe I'm just incredibly ignorant about how game engines work, but wouldn't it have been possible to import a lot of the meshes from previous DA titles and re-touch them? Wouldn't that have saved a lot of time and effort, and given a much broader selection? Instead we have a bunch of very similar new meshes. Look at the qunari; someone spent time making three (four if you're male) race-specific meshes, but they are all extremely (and unnecessarily) short. There's very little diversity outside varying degrees of short and severe. And those three comprise the entirety of qunari hair options. But qunari aren't the only victims of very lopsided hairstyle options, they're simply the worst offenders. It feels like corners were cut.
It doesn't take a hairstylist to spot an overwhelming lack of diversity, or to make halfway decent hair. Just look at uploaded character pics or visit modding sites to see what's popular, then ignore what's unfeasible or lore-breaking. Or make a survey. Or failing that, simply walk out onto the street or look around the office. But to have fifty shades of fuzz and a bunch of undercuts at the expense of more common styles just seems like a very strange design decision.
I realize that modeling hair isn't easy. But it surely can't be that hard to make a few decent-looking buns, braids, or ponytails that at least give the illusion of length if clipping is such an issue.
I really do hope they come out with some sort of customization pack that expands on our selection (especially for qunari, who presently don't have access to anything longer than 'skull-conforming').

Beards for Men are just as bad as the hair styles.
I finished working on my human male face, and tried several of the beards, all of which are scruffy. Where's my neatly trimmed beard option??
What is worse, many of the beards didn't even touch my characters face in the CC. They were literally floating about 1/2 inch away from his face.
Why are all the mustaches giant handlebars?? Where is the dashing rogue mustache??
How come NONE of your artist can make decent looking hair bioware?? Why does an UNPAID modder from skyrim produce hair textures that are 1000x better than any of the options you've given us in the CC?

Yep, Bioware dropped the ball on this one. It's 2014, almost all games with character creation have long hair with physics in them. Sadly for whatever reason, DA:I still has the same hair helmets that ME 1 and DA:O had.
Disappointing.
